Molly the Barn Owl

I don't know if anyone else watched or is currently watching Molly and McGee, the Barn Owls here in Southern CA that had a clutch of owlets in the spring. Now Molly is sitting on a second clutch of eggs with one due to hatch today or tomorrow.

The Owl box has several cameras inside and outside the box for daytime and night time viewing. Molly is broadcast 24/7 sitting on her eggs, being brought food by McGee and fending off other owls who are looking for a box to nest in or have owl eyes for McGee. It's really fun to check in on them daily.

Every so often Carlos Royal, the man who owns the owl box and the lovely spread it is located on, goes live and gives updates.

There are some stunning night shots of Molly, McGee and their owlets, who fledged in June, on Molly's blog.

I watched her last eggs hatch, watched the babies grow and watched them fledge. I was sad to see them go, happy there are new ones. It's great fun.

That is so beautiful, Jean!!! I love how your photos always tell the whole story...like the bluejay in the background. Very cool! Bad for the bird, but once again, AWESOME that you were there to help him on his way, Chicka! I can't even imagine how incredible it is to be that close to an owl, to touch it and cuddle. Ok, I'm getting carried away again. LOL LOL @ line dancing! I'm very shy about shining the light up into their eyes in the early morning. I always feel like I'm going to mess with their wildness or something, so I haven't tried getting them all to dance with me...yet. :D They are SO loud now, I'm also worried some idiot in the neighborhood is going to do something stupid to quiet them up. I understand that Barn owls are very amenable to nesting if the habitat is right and if rodenticides are not used. If there are Barn owls in the area, and you provide nest space for them, they should use it. Are you in appropriate habitat? Habitat: The Barn Owl's favorite habitat consists of an open low-lying area, preferably below 750-ft. elevation, with an abundant vole population. Although the owl has an extensive range it is uncommon higher in the mountains. Grasslands in areas of milder climates with old buildings or hollow trees for perching and nesting may support large concentrations. Texas_Annie: When I lived in Southern California, half of my time gardening was spent dealing with gophers. People in the East have no idea what these little buggers can do! Once, a neighbor and I were growing giant pumpkins for a contest, and as they grew larger and larger, we would try and lift them off the ground a bit, to guess their weight. Ours were each about 150 pounds, or so, until one day when he lifted his pumpkin, it came right up off the ground. Gophers had tunneled in from beneath it, and eaten all its insides out--nothing but a shell remained. This, after 3 months of special care given the pumpkin. I'm sure he would have liked to wring the little critter's neck. They do make traps for gophers that are pretty effective. You open their run (when you see soil piled up) and put the trap in the run, then put a board over it. Lifting the board and checking it periodically should yield a squashed little plant-eater. If you continue doing this for the rest of your life, you'll probably keep the gophers under control.

You can hear one of the babies peeping right now. There's a hole or dent in the left most egg. Shouldn't be long now.

It is Pacific time. Right now it's nearly 4pm. They are in San Marcos, CA.

I watched it for awhile and it was amazing to see the Dad come in at night and feed them ! Love the mothers face, just beautiful !And all the noise the babies made, too .

Wow, that was fun to watch! Usually I don't see much with these webcams but this time mom or dad was standing and preening, then carefully laid down on the eggs. Thought I heard some peeps too, but maybe that was outside.

Kayjones--As soon as I clicked on the link, I was on. I'm not very good with the computer so I can't give you any suggestions, but hopefully someone else can.

No problem seeing it -- after I sat through the GOP commercial. Ugh.

Are barn owls different? The owls we have in our area need a LOT of hunting space per owl. I don't think there would be two clutches per owl here -- ever.
