Noise under the hood of the truck.

About an hour and a half ago I went to get Anna who stayed with my mother last night. I was on Goodman Rd. which is the busiest street in Desoto County. I was on the inside lane when I heard that noise coming from under the hood. I thought to myself, oh no!!! not here, not now!!! I slowed way down and was finally able to get into the right hand lane. I wanted to stop the truck right there, but I know it would have probably caused an accident. I found a parking lot where I could safely stop the truck. I turned off the engine and slowly opened the hood. Right there on the passenger side close to the windshield was a little orange kitten. Thank God he was unhurt. He's pretty tame. I was afraid when I reached for him he would make a break for it and run into the street. He let me pick him up and put him in the truck. Of course I then had to go to Sonic and get him a hamburger patty and a glass of water. He stayed in my lap most of the time til I got to where Anna was, then he stayed in her lap on the way home.

When I got home I put him out of the truck. He didn't try to follow us into the house. A couple of days ago I saw a black kitten about the same size as this one. I don't know if they belong to someone who just moved into the neighborhood or if they are strays. I didn't get a good look at the black one, but the orange one isn't underweight at all and is very tame.

Now I'll have to be on the lookout for the next few days to try to determine if they are strays. If they are I will try to find them a home. I will not take them to the shelter. Anna and I have been going there to help out for a little more than a month now and they have too many kittens already. Actually, one is too many, but you know what I mean. I would love to have them. It's been over 10 years since my little girl kitty, Smudge, died. She was three months short of being 20 years old. I know Buddy and Penny would be okay with a cat. I'm not sure about Luther. Bob's not a cat person, but he's married to one so he'll have to deal with it if it happens. I'm not a gun person, but that hasn't stopped him from collecting them.

Aw, Linda...thank goodness it didn't get in the fan belt. I have had that happen and it is horrible. I think you have a new kitten. ;)

I know what you mean about the shelter. It breaks my heart to go there. So many beautiful kittens and cats, and not enough homes. I have told them that any cat they have that is spayed or neutered and they can't find a home for, I will take, if it can be an outside cat.

I used to have a cat named Smudge too. I am often amazed at how much you and I have in common. I wish you lived closer.

I had a clanging on the rear of my car, the other day. At first thought it was something loose in the trunk, maybe a forgotten hidden jar of peanut butter :o)

Then thought no, it must be that dump truck that was beside me.

Passed it, noise continued.

Then I looked at my side mirror and there it was!!
I forgot to attach the gas cap after filling.
There it was just dangling and banging away on the side of my car :o)

IÂll share what I am doing about makeup air. I need to qualify this with the fact that we have not closed the house yet so performance is still to be determined. I researched commercial installations. If you are obsessive I recommend http://energy.ca.gov/reports/2003-06-13_500-03-034F.PDF. A recommended setup is to replace about 80% of the exhaust air with makeup air at the cooktop. Pulling the rest of the makeup air from the room seems to improve capture. We have a sealed combustion oil fired boiler and no fireplace so I am not too worried a slight negative pressure. Even with new construction there is still some infiltration. For example, the baths and laundry are vented to outside. Another thing to consider is the temperature of the makeup air. In cold climates it may be desirable to temper it. I am going to try it with no tempering, but I have made prevision to add a duct heater if it is required. My plan was to pull the makeup air from the outside; however, my builder suggested we pull it from the unheated attic. He thinks that increasing the air exchanges in that space would be a good thing, IÂm not sure. There are lots of ways to deliver the makeup air. One of the better ones is to deliver the air under the cooktop. My cooktop will be mounted in such a way to create a 6" x 40" channel under it. The end of channel is covered with a decorative grate. The air flows under and to some extent through the cook top, around the front, then up and out the hood. This pattern creates very effective containment of the plume.

My mom has this problem too as well as drafts. In mine there are 2 mechanisms that kinda block it off - the obvious one on the outside of the house, and then just after the hood is ... I don't know how to describe it.. its essentially a one way valve. The hinge is in the center, so if any airflow is going its just like a thin line down the center of the pipe so barely restricts air flow and then when the air flow stops gravity + a very weak spring close the pipe off. I tried to find one for my mom but couldn't (didn't know where to look), mine came with the hood.

houses14, my Imperial range hood is not an insert, rather an under cabinet ss hood. However, the materials used, and the quality of construction, the fan motors, are the same with minor variances to allow for space restrictions within the smaller size of my hood. Construction wise, it is all that I had hoped for, was easy to install, and has functioned beautifully. Packaging and shipping were excellent. The ss is marine grade. This means that the amount of chromium in the ss will prevent rust from forming in the interior of the hood over time. The electrician informed me that their fan motors and switches appeared to be top quality. The warranty for my hood is 7 years, which is almost unheard of in the industry. Their specifications and installation instructions are right on to allow for optimal operation. For example, my duct is 8" from hood to roof jack and had to have a certain rise in height from the hood before the first angle in the duct work. Baffles remove and reinstall easily for cleaning. It was a joy to call Imperial direct with technical questions at their manufacturing headquarters in California. Someone was always immediately available to answer my questions regarding their vent hoods or recommended installation. My installer was promptly referred to their engineer for technical assistance as I requested that the wiring that would automatically turn on my hood once a certain temperature below the hood was reached be disconnected as I did not want that feature. To me, having that level of service available when answers are needed means a great deal. I found that the folks at headquarters were always honest even if it wasn't the answer I wanted and that they knew their stuff. Their light and fan switches are continuously variable which is rare on vent hoods. This means that they both function like a rheostat with a continuous increase, or decrease, rather than clicking up or down discreet notches, such as level 1 to 4. Also, I liked having the option of installing the switches wherever I wanted remotely, rather than being mounted to the underside of the hood. The hood easily handles removal of odors, steam or grease beneath it's surface. I've found that if the hood is allowed to run for about 10 minutes prior to cooking that it can be operated at a lower level and do a good job. The hood on low is fairly quiet but is noisier than I had anticipated at higher levels with having dual fans and baffles. Also, highest cfm level is 1000 which is a factor. However, I used a different size led bulb than Imperial recommended. I now have a gap around the bulb that needs to be filled with a rubber gasket. Also, the temporary roof jack is too large, and the correct one is waiting to be installed so the jury is still out on the noise issue. Noise level was quite an issue for me, but even if it remains unchanged, I would still buy the same hood given how pleased I am with the overall operation and that I can easily live with the noise that I now have. I'll have to look up the name of the online vendor I used and will add that information tonight.

Sorry if I was unclear, but the silencer removes noise that is beyond the silencer relative to the listener. So, not that it would matter, but hood baffle noise would be partially silenced when listening on the roof. Relative to the cook in the kitchen, the silencer removes noise beyond it. So, hood baffle noise and local duct noise and local hood interior transition noise won't be affected by the silencer when listening at the cooktop, but duct noise on the roof side of the silencer and most importantly blade tip turbulence noise from the roof blower or the in-line blower that is past the silencer (relative to the hood) will be attenuated when listening at the cooktop. The blower noise is typically the loudest, so the silencer is important to minimizing noise. (It is worth pointing out as I think I did sometime in the past that blade tip turbulence noise dominates baffle noise given well designed baffles. I only have personal experience with my Wolf/Independent hood, so it is possible that a particular baffle design could be noisier than a particular blower design.) So the silencer should be as near as feasible to the hood (past any dampers), and the motor closer to the roof or on the roof. A duct that passes heated rooms should be insulated from the rooms passed, and possibly partially coated with damping material (I use automotive sheet metal dampener sheets). A damper is needed at the hood (probably part of the hood) and another should be at the roof. The Wolf/Broan low profile blower I have has its own damper which opens upon flow. Abbaka and Broan blowers look similar and appear to use the same approach. An upblast or downblast quasi-commercial blower and housing design may need a conventional damper just below it. Dampers should be checked for function without hanging up on errant screws before workmen can escape the project. A straight run will have minimal duct bend turbulence noise (caused by flow separation, perhaps). It may or may not make adding a silencer inconvenient, architecturally. kas

One time I was in a hurry to get to the post office to mail some waterlilies. I usually pack them in the bedroom because I can leave the box laying on the bed while I get the plants in their individual packing. I started backing out of the driveway, and I heard a very faint meowing. I stopped and got out and looked under the hood. Looked under the car. I didn't see a cat anywhere. Got back in the car and I heard it again.

A kitten had crawled into the box when I was packing the waterlilies. Thank goodness I heard the meow and found it.
I was sending those plants to Alabama, and I shudder to think what the person who opened the box would have found and thought, had I not heard the kitten.

I remember reading how someone had problems with their car. Opened the hood and a huge boa constrictor was wrapped around all sorts of parts of the engine. It took a mechanic a long time to unwind it from all the spaces it clung to. I guess it was some local snake collector's runaway.

Glenda, It's a good thing many of them come with straps now to keep them attached to the car.

Marilyn, over 25 years ago on a bitter cold day I cranked my car and heard the most pitiful noise I could tell what it was from the way it sounded. I open the hood and saw the little kitten in the round part that houses the fan. I couldn't reach it. There were some utility men working a couple of houses away from my house. I called out to them and they came over to help me. It was a tiny little thing, just a few weeks old. I took him to the vet, but they said his neck was broke and they couldn't do anything to help him. They had to put him down. I cried all day long about that. I didn't know where the kitten came from. That evening the lady next door came over and asked if I had seen a small orange kitten. I told her what happened and told her I didn't know they had a pet. She said they just got him and he was 6 weeks old. I then asked her why in the he11 would she leave a 6 week old kitten brand new to her out side all day long on an extremely bitter cold day. I then proceeded to cuss her out. I also told her I was going to send her the vet bill. I didn't send her the bill,but I don't think we ever spoke after that.

When I heard that meow today I was afraid I was going to find the same thing. I still cry whenever I think of that other poor little kitten.

Marily, I wish we lived closer too. I like you and admire you a lot and I think it would be so neat to tell people I live near Chocolate Bayou. :)
