Cool! The one you bought must have been pregnant when you bought her? Do they just have one at a time? I think koi are such neat fish. Have you named the baby yet? Boy or girl?

Congratulations! I know how you feel! I have a pond, too, but with goldfish. I'm thrilled with every new batch of goldfish, year after year. It's fun, isn't it.

Congrats, CR! Are fish like cats, are most all calicos girls in Fish World?

We call 'em Mystery Fish because ours always start out black and we don't see them until they're a decent size.

Can you tell by the fins if it's a boy or girl? I know that's how you tell with some tropical fish. If that bottom fin is long and thin it's a boy.

I have no idea how you tell if it's a boy or a girl....I don't even know for sure who had babies...LOL! No one was pregnant when I bought them because they were tiny and they are about 2 or 3 yrs old now.I only have 3 (well 4 now) Kois a white one,the calico one and a gold/black one.The white and the calico are are the oldest and biggest so maybe they are the parents...unless she's a hussy and mated with one of the Goldfish.I don't know if they are like cats with the color....hmmm...I don't know ALOT about them! LOL! My goldfish were all feeder fish,I told them I rescued them! LOL! Now they are all about 5-6 inches long and some very pretty ones.I want to make my pnd bigger(again) pretty soon,I won't have a front yard, just a pond...LOL! So hard to keep it clear here though...the heat grows algae like crazy.Yuck!
I think they lay eggs Maryann....maybe someone ate the other eggs or something...I only see one baby.

It might be a shubunkin, CR. Koi don't usually spawn when they are 8" long. Shubunkins are calico single tailed goldfish.

Goldfish can spawn when they are as young as a few months old.

They lay eggs, very early in the morning, which hatch in 4 days. As soon as they finish laying the eggs, they will start eating them, as will the other fish in the pond.

If you baby fish is "calico" in that it is orange and white and black....that isn't a calico. Black on metallic goldfish...like regular orange ones and white ones and orange and white ones...is temporary. They will lose the black color. So, when you buy a gold and black goldfish...the black is always temporary. It is a juvenile coloration. Sometimes baby fish will stay a dark olive drab for a long time, and then they turn black. When they turn black, that means they are getting ready to turn orange. First they will just have black down their backs and maybe fins and a little on their faces and almost over night, they will turn orange. I have seen baby goldfish stay black for two years and then turn color in less than a week.

Shubunkins have blue, usually, but the thing that makes them shubunkins is that they have transparent scales.

If it is a fantail with the coloring of a shubunkin...or, rather, transparent scales...that is called a calico fantail.

Chubby, to control algae add plants and don't feed the fish. I don't know how to raise Koi, but my goldfish are old, bright gold, 5-6 inches long, and they reproduce like crazy! I have only gfish, never feed them, do not have a filter or a heater. The pond is about 18" deep, 3'x 4' and the water is clear as it can be.

I live in Wisconsin. The fish, the water lily and cattails overwinter in the pond. I have no idea how they survive buried under mountains of snow and solid ice, but they do, for about 12 years now. Every spring the old fish revive and reproduce.

When we moved into this house we put a few feeder fish in the (existing) pond, just for fun. At first we used the filter that was in the pond, but it failed after the first year. We left the fish in the pond over the winter, never expecting to have fish in the spring, but there they were. To our utter amazement, they reproduced and have been doing so successfully ever since.

I never dreamed we'd enjoy it this much, and that it would take so little effort. It's quite beautiful, lots of flowers on the lily and around the pond. I love it.

what are we doing wrong?? have never had babies that i know of...of course we lost the entire population over the 4th from a very hungry heron...(we've now built a structure over the fish) and just bought 10 new ones...(dh said we've lost 3-4)

we also have a cute frog, who has made a home with us, lol...

I would say it's definately a Koi...they have a different shape than Goldfish...it looks just like my big Koi.Same coloring and all.Sorta silvery, gold, black.I don't have any Shubunkins...can you get one from just regular goldfish? my GF are all gold...white..reddish...no calicos.Oh well...even if it is a goldfish...he/she is cool!
We do have a filter/fountain on the pond,I like the running water.I have plants in it but not all normal pond plants..I have lots of Cannas and a couple water Iris's and an Umbrella plant.I can't seem to get a lily to live...

I bet you have more than one, you may have another few still hidiing or still black so you don't see them. mine usually get eaten (eggs) and maybe tiny babies (before I can see them. For some reason I do not have many frogs this year and never got any tadpoles :(. The baby fish that do survive are the ones that get sucked up in the filter and end up in the top pond. I have at least 7 this year!!!!! I have no idea what to do with them, there are 14 fish in my 600 gal 3 tier pond already. One is about 12", big goldie, a couple shubunkins, a couple pearl fancy tails, 2 orange and white fancytails and a black fancytail all over 5 years old then the babies from 5 years down to last year, NOW I have 7 new babies...that's fish overload! I am sure they will be ok this winter but by next year some of these babies are going to need to find a new home. I didi spot a house a few miles down the road that has a new pond this year, I may have to make a visit. OH heck!!!! Im on the KT forum, not the ponding forum! oooppps LOL

Susan, make sure you don't have any other fish in the pond with your goldfish, if you want to raise babies. For example, mosquito fish. They not only eat mosquito larvae, they eat baby goldfish as well. If you have goldfish, you don't have to put any fish in with them to eat mosquitoes. They will do it.

Some water insects will also eat goldfish fry. Backswimmers, for example, and dragonfly larvae, and a few others. The little black beetle looking ones...water boatmen...they don't eat fry.

CR, if you have a spitter or a fountain that moves the water very much or splashes water on the pads, waterlilies don't like that. They prefer very still water. They especially don't like splashing water on their pads and they will decline until they just disappear.

Koi do have a different shaped head than goldfish and they have barbels...little whiskers at the corner of their mouths.

How cool!!! I don't know nothing about fish or ponds but I think its cool as heck you have a baby Deb!!!

thanks so much for the info..we do have a pump that goes up to the top half, and a mini waterfall. we also have a bubbler..so maybe that's the problem...

i'm sure glad we hadn't invested in koi, after being "fished" by a big heron. our first set of fish were over 7 years old. the second set just a year. we leave the fish our all year, and have 2 heaters to keep away the ice. froggie loves to sit on top of it, lol...

i found this structure in the sunset magazine, it's very simple looking, like a frame and a roof of clear polycarb (no sides)..we duplicated it as well as amatures can do...lol. for the winter we'll inclose it with builder grade clear plastic...

Congratulations on your new baby. I bet there is more than one. We always joke that we need to put our fish on birth control.

Wow...interesting. It never ceases to amaze me that when I learn a little, I realize how little I know! I had a goldfish that has the big bubbly eyes live for 5 years in a plain goldfish bowl, no filter, no friends either.

Ya got my interest up again, just might have to get another one.

Years ago I had a saltwater aquarium with a bunch of cheap guppies and angelfish. One became a mom and we had dozens of babies. But the big fish were chasing and eating them. I had to scoop out the babies and put them in a separate aquarium.
