Yard sales this week

Turned out to be a really good day of yard saling. First stop I found a long, skinny ceramic dish that matched a 13x9-inch dish I had at home. 25 cents! That set the tone for the day. Nick got a free Oompah Loompah keychain at one sale and asked if we owned that movie (Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory)since he wanted to watch it. I said no but maybe we'd find it a yard sale, but probably not today but we actually did later on. I scored 5 nice cookbooks, a brand spanking new baking stone set (large rectangular one) for $4, a Melissa and Dough magnetic calendar for $3. Lots of other odds and ends too. Prices were cheap, selection was good today.

Also, funny thing, I was at a yard sale in our town and recognized the woman from a yard sale she had outside of her storage facility in another town. That happened to be the place that Dan tossed his shoe out the window and I didn't realize it until later. She said she still had the shoe at home LOL.

Good deals Paula! Love the shoe story. lol There was a small rummage sale today in my town, but I had a hangover from last night so I stayed in bed. Hope I didn't miss anything.

I went to about 40 garage sales last Saturday, but only bought things from 2 of them. No amazing finds unfortunately. I'm getting so picky about what I buy cause I already have way too much stuff.

The nice thing is you'll never know what you missed. I always tell myself that since most yard sales start on Friday but I have to go to work on Fridays. I find enough good stuff on Saturdays.

I happen to like to buy stuff whether I need it or not but I can't afford to blow $100 in an hour in Wal-Mart anymore. So I spend Saturday mornings blowing $20 or much less generally. Less financial guilt, the kids like it, I learn my way around the area looking for sales off the beaten path, I meet people, see people I know from other places. It's my main hobby right now. I'll be sad when yard sale season ends.

Thank you everyone, I'd been wanting to make those for a long time, tried to use coffee cans :)Now if the flowers will hurry and fill out! Thanks Crafty, my DH said he wanted bunting on it before we even started building it! It looks so good and I'll have it back out before our Memorial Day fish fry and shrimp boil :) I think I've been very lucky in yard sales the last couple years,those are a few of my finds :)

Thanks all, I was quite pleased to find some things I like at so few sales. It was pouring rain so we couldn't have gardened anyhow, and truth be told I'm hoping it pours again tomorrow! ;-D Luvs, I got the placemats at Ikea (really inexpensive) for the RV and they are a flexible plastic - feel kinda like rubber. They come in lots of colors and I want to get more but we didn't plan Ikea into this trip so I'll have to wait til another trip. I *have* seen the pincushions but completely forgot about them - thanks for the reminder, I may do that. I was thinking of doing a windchime with them but not sure if I have any other silver I want to 'sacrifice' for it. Marlene, it's always nice to find cheap things that one likes and share them with y'all who appreciate them. Karen, I'm so stubborn, I refuse to listen to my body, altho I know it's ready to disown me with all this gardening but someone has to do it since the 'staff' doesn't show up! LOL OA, the bowl is sitting on a shabby cast iron candleholder that I often use as a riser. I had to elevate it for the pic to show the design. It was a YS find of course. I like that phrase 'alternate identities' Candy. I think that's how a lot of us think, isn't it! So much fun repurposing 'junk'.

Stoney, happy birthday to your DH! The guy who was working at the store called the door 1950's mediteranian. Which I can see, but it reminds me of old, Medieval German doors. LOL! It's very heavy, solid wood, dark stained. There's a wooden ornamental peice on the inside which is broken off at the top on one side (I don't care), and has a big, heavy door knocker on the outside. The handles remind me of German doors too or older homes. There is a window on top with leaded glass in a diamond pattern. Lauren, I and one friend think it's cool looking, but we are all a little odd. LOL! I'm going to have it restained, either dark again or medium dark...depending on how the wood looks when it's uncovered. Phyllis, I agree, we've had lots of rain here too and my tomato plants are loading but not riping much. Susan, I have to go out and work in the garden still. Only thing I did was pick beans. Patti43, thanks. Sue, I've been picking green beans for the last few days and now have a big bunch and am getting ready to wash, cut and put them in my crockpot with a porkroast. Barbara, glad you had a good time at your school reunion! Susan, I hate cleaning the kids' room...speaking of kids...they just pulled up. Vannie, my dd would want to spend it, Alex might keep it in the bank a little bit. Bettye, thanks. Glenda, how was your birthday? When do you leave on your trip? are you excited? It was a pretty good shopping at rummages for me too. I went a few times these past few days. I got some good books, $.25 each, a pair of glass salt and pepper shakers for my table for $.50, a yard of green and white striped fabric, $.25, 4 yards of flowered print fabric, $.25, a yard of fleece fabric, $.25, several shorthand tablets at $.25 each, a big ceramic doggy bowl for $1.00, a big baby doll that cries, $1.00, brand new packages of hair clips 6 in a bag for $.50, two big Rubbermaid trash cans with lids and wheels for $5.00 for the two, (I gave those to Amber and Mike), a nice electric pencil sharpener for $5.00, a battery operated baby bouncey thing with new batteries, a mat you lay on the floor in the shape of an elephant with a mobile above it, several little baby long pants and several tops, 4 pair of new sock booties, a little mattress for a changing table, and 3 receiving blankets all for $2.80! Those all went home with Amber. I may have forgotten a few things as it has been over the past 2 or 3 days. Oh I did buy Amber a top for $.50 and my Mother a nice pink shawl and a pair of new leg warmers, they were also $.50 each. A brand new in the packaged DVD of Butch and Sundance, The Early Years, it was $.50. I also bought myself a piece of Strawtown pottery, it is a bowl with an ear of corn on it. Strawtown is near our family farm. I had to pay $2.00 for it. So I had a good time this weekend with the rummages. Anyone else had fun this week? Sue

I only bought 2 tee shirts. One was a Washington Caps tee that hubby will like a lot though. I only went to ones I passed on the way to work. Have cut wayyyy down on yard saling.

I only went to one garage sale this year, bought a small stiil-in-the-box water fountain for my yard for $2. Hooked it up but it made a pretty loud buzzing sound. Kept it a couple of weeks then just threw it in the trash.

We went to about 30 sales this morning, didn't find a lot but what we did find is nice! We're pretty picky nowadays, and pass up many things we would've bought a few years ago.

DH is buying toys and such for his niece's two little boys, and he found little ball gloves, a couple of badmitton rackets and a basketball hoop on an adjustable stand. I found a really cute Brighton straw purse for $10, complete with storage box and cloth dust bag. Oh and I bought a darling sun dress that I am 98% sure is too small for me. But, I can hope to be that size by next year, right? And then two glass Christmas balls that were hand blown in Springfield, MO. They're gorgeous!

With my 2-year old, you never know what will happen. It wasn't actually much later, just the next stop in another town when I realized it. Since it was a hand-me-down shoe from Nick and he had plenty of other shoes at home, I wasn't going back. This couple made such a big deal about getting the shoe back to me but I'm pretty sure I threw out the other shoe.

My good weekend continued. I scored a brand new pair of Clarks at the thrift store today for $4.50. They're black slip-ons for fall.

I bought a really nice cookbook for a dime.
It looks like it has never been opened....perfect condition.
I will check it out and copy any really good recipes. Then I will donate it to our Friends of the Library. I think they can probably sell it for a dollar.

Hey you need to make a sedum planter out of that "lost" shoe. It wants to stay with you - obviously.

You know I actually have the other shoe. Why on earth did I keep it? I don't know if I'll have time to go back and retrieve the mate though. They live way out there.
