My grandsons call me "Young Grandma". That's because they called my mother "Old Grandma". After she passed away, I thought they would just call me "Grandma", but I guess they are used to my "name". They call my father "Old Grandpa"...even though he's the only male ancestor still living (I'm now the only female ancestor still living).

My 82-year old mother is getting smaller every year (spine compression plus osteoporosis). When my now 10-year old grandson was born he had no less than four grandmothers. I had hoped that he would call me "Oma" to set me apart from the others. But as you have been told, kids often choose their own names. And while in the beginning I wasn't crazy about his choice, it could have been worse. But another grandma got a moniker I'm glad I didn't. He calls my mother "Little Grandma", and I am "Big Grandma" (and sometimes Oma). My ex-husband's wife is "Nana" and his dad's mother is "Dirty Grandma". Better her than me, LOL.

My 2-year old grandson is calling me Oma for now, but we'll see what he comes up with in time.

My grandson calls us grandma and grandma. He calls his other grandparents nannie and popie.

I don't think it's true that most children choose what to call their grandparents. I think it is more true that children are directed as you say by parents and family tradition. Parents say from the start "we'll be seeing" grandma and grandpa,baba and deda, Meem and Pawpa, nana or whatever and the kids pick up on it.

"Ceezer"- a name for my mother. When my DD was born she was the only grandchild in the family. Everytime the baby did anything cute my sisters would say "look at her, Mama" and my mother would reply "Grandma sees her." So she became Ceezer to DD and all the rest of the dgc and greats too. That is the way she herself chose to spell it.

Oh, believe me, we used "Oma" every time we were talking about me, but children do have minds of their own. As long as he is calling me, I'm not going to insist on a title. He says Big Grandma in the most loving way, so it's all good.

Makayla and Kaden call me 'Gramzee'.
Some how Michele and I came up with the name and it stuck.
Of course when they were younger they called me 'Grammy' but I changed that fast!
They call my Xhusband's wife 'Mom Mom L and his mother Mom Mom Colleen.
I think my name is the best! LOL

Our GK's sure picked ours. First GS started calling DH "Pop-Pop". No idea why. He didn't call his other GF that.

DGD named me "Mi-Mi". I was trying to make her laugh one day to keep her mind off the fact she'd just had a little bump on the head. She laughed so hard she was bent over and roaring "Oh, Mi-Mi, oh Mi-Mi".

So in our case, there was no prompting by parents.

Usually just grandma, some called me "grandma with the toy box". another called me "grandma Wichita".

"Dirty Grandma"...LOL! Kids DO say the darnedest things!

All my GK'S and GGK'S call us Nana(They pronunce it Nonna) and call dh Papa.Even have a niece and 2 nephews that call us Nana & Papa.They grew up around here so the name stuck.They're grown now and still call us that.Works for me.

DH is Ji pronounced *G* from the Japanese Jichan meaning Grandfather.

We are gramma and grampa, but my oldest called me gran the other day and I liked it.

We (& their parents) started off referring to ourselves as Nana & Pop-pop.
They use those names for us, but also @ times use Nanny or Ninny for me & Wop-wop for dh. I am amused by the "nicks" they thought up! LOL

We tried to steer them towards Nannie & PawPaw. Somewhere down the line THEY changed it to Gramma & Grampa.

When our children were born they had two sets of grandparents and they called them Grandma and Grandpa Newton and Grandma and Grandpa "Mac", a shorten version of our last name. They also had one Great Grandma and she was called Grandma Bessie.

Mine call me Granny....except a few who call me Ruthie...I came into the family when they were already good size kids....don't remember their ages but they call me by my name.

The oldest GD calls me Grammee, and GS calls me Gram.

I would give my eye teeth to hear what my other grand daughter would call me, but until later in her life, I won't get to know her....

I am happy for anything I can get!

I guess Gramzee didn't like "Grammy," but I love it. It's like winning a Grammy Award. :-)

I'm not a Grandmother (yet) but I called my own "Gramma". She was the only grandparent I ever had, and we lived with her in her house until her death when I was 8.

Our two oldest GD's call me Grandma, but the two youngest call me "Dibby". Their other grandma is "Dibbits" and there is no confusing the two.

When GD#3 was first learning to talk, if she had trouble pronouncing a name, she would just say dibby...little by little she learned all the names, but I have remained Dibby and she's now 10 years old! I think Dibbits got her name just to distinguish between the two.

I'm Gram Mam most of the time and Gammy some of the time. Either way I love it all.

I'm Gramma to all but one of my gkids. One two-yo gson used to call me Gamma Sherry, but several months ago he started calling me Sherry. It's the cutest thing ever! His sibs and cousins still call me Gramma; I have no idea why he started calling me by my name, since I'm mainly called Mom or Gramma in his presence, even by my husband. He can use the phone now that he's 2 1/2. The other day Papa answered our phone; after their conversation, Grant said, "Bye, Papa. May I talk to Sherry now?" Cracked us up.

When DD got married we asked her if she was going to keep her maiden (our) last name, she's a doctor. Her response was, "No, I've worked long and hard to find a husband (LOL)!"
So when she and her DH said that their kids were going to call me Meemaw, I said, "No way, I worked long and hard to be called Grandma!"

I have 15 GK's & most at first called me Mee Maw--Later, they all had different names--Grannie, Grandma, Grams, most of their friends call me Grandma! My kids friends call me MOM--LOL

Our step granddaughter calls me Nana Nita and my husband Grandpa Mike.

Our next 2 live in Tucson, Matt was adopted when he was a day old. His adoptive parents had a baby girl just before Matt's first birthday. Since there were so many grandparents floating around (3 sets) We were called Grandma Nita and Grandpa Mike. They have for several years just called us Grandma and Grandpa.

The youngest, Bobby, who we are raising has always called me Grandma. He started out calling my husband Grandpa but over the years it has changed to Pop or Pops. On occasion he will revert back to Grandpa.

All six call DH " Pawpaw". Two call me Gramma and 4 call me Nana. DOn't call what they call us as long as htey call us : )

We just have our one little granddaughter and she calls us Grandma and Papa. Her other grandparents are Nana a Grandpa. This is who she decided we are!LOL

Both mine call me grandma. I think GD calls her other one nana and papa. My GS called me old grandma and the other one new grandma. Don't even ask me why except he saw us a lot since we live near by and the other one live two hours away. Now I'm just grandma. It does get confusing when the other and I are together. I called mine grandma, and my kids called theirs, grandma. I guess it's a tradition.

grandma and poppa...dd2's call me grandma susan..it just less confusing for them as they have ggran, sil's mom and then sil's step...

i can't stand the formality of dd1 mil! she is known as grandmother ------(her last name)it just seems so cold...

My grand son calls me Gammy . No r in there. He calls dh PopPop , my in laws are Nanny and Pappy. When he was here for the summer, his little friend next door started calling me Gammy too! So cute! I like that better than the Miss Karen he always used before.

Most of the grands call us Grammy and PapPap...One calls me Ammy,couldn't say the gr, and some of the older ones call me Grandma.....

Years ago, when the grands started coming, they referred to me as New Grandma and DMIL as Old Gramdma...She didn't care for that too much....

Our only 2 grandchildren call me Dandy and DH Grandpa. I asked to be called that because it was the name I called my only grandmother.

All of my grandsons...the ones that can talk!...call me Granlyn. I liked "Granlan" who posts here, and I adapted it to my own name (Lynda > Gran Lyn).

my 2 grands always called me Grandma in Williuamsburg. Not original but it kept us all straight. :o) Greatgrand started calling me Omar. He does call hubby Great granddaddy. We never did figure out where he picked it up as no one else in the family ever called me that.

Well, my screen name is a dead giveaway now. I'm GiGi and my husband is Lebanese, so he's Gido ("g" pronounced like a "j"). Siti is the grandmother in Arabic, but my DMIL is Siti (good) so my first GDD called me GiGi and I love it! My precious grandmother (mom's mom) was Mimi, so in my mind, that name was taken...and never to be so again. I really like what they call me!

GreatGrandma was too long for our little greatgrandkids, so the G and G became GG or Gigi.

My GS calls me Tutu (Hawaiian for grandma) and DH grandpa. His other grandmother came out Ama (he couldn't pronounce the gr) and her Dh is Papa.
