Best Way To Get To Ground Zero & Empire State Bldg

I live in NE Pa, S of Scranton. I would like to visit Ground Zero and the Empire State bldg in NYC. I'm trying to work out the best way to go about it. Was considering going in by bus, to avoid traffic and parking in NYC, but someone told me that I could drive to The Statue of Liberty on the NJ side and take a ferry to Manhattan. Would like any suggustions about that and the best way to go about seeing the sites once there. Couldn't think of a better place than the KT to get some good tips. TIA Mare

I can't remember the letter of the subway line that runs to Ground Zero, but when I am in NYC or Queens, I take the subway wherever I go. Be sure to go to the Ground Zero Museum right across the street.

Thanks Linda, I'm a little unsure of the NYC subway. I was hoping to get into the city w/o taking my vehicle in and having to deal with traffic and parking problems. Once there I was thinking of cabbing it, unless I get some other good advice.

Thanks to all of you. No, there does not appear to be any roof damage; however, I lost two windows on the North side of the house. I was at work in Neenah at the time, and watched the storm roll by with some of my co-workers, never dreaming it was on its way to my home. Hail like this is rare here, only about every 10 years or so. I really feel for those who have major hail storms more often, such as gardeners in Colorado, who might have it more than once a year. I saw photos this Spring of a storm that brought feet of hail to some places in Texas, I can't even imagine what such "instant Winter" would be like. Well, when life deals you lemons, make lemon-aid. At least my yard is soaked, so I can safely shoot off a little fireworks without fear of burning down what I have left. Happy 4th everyone. :-)

Oh boy! My head is going nuts making this decision! :) I had my neighbor bush hog again (tax refund check FINALLY coming this week..that's how I'm paying for this thing..yeah, yeah, I know, I need to tweak my exemptions so I get my money much earlier, the crazy thing is my federal we had to pay and state we got twice as much back...go figure)....luckily my neighbor did it in exchange for me letting him use my well water on his corn...I LOVE neighbors!! :) I did bake him a batch of cookies, though. I agree I could use a 3 point hitch tractor but I don't really want one. There's just too much, attachments, size, bulk, and they intimidate the heck out of me..their under carriage decks don't have any higher cutting than the Kubota zero turns..and I want to avoid getting a finishing deck for my front yard...I have vinyl fencing all around and don't want to maneuver those tractors..yes, ideally, I'd have both a tractor/ZRT..but I want a pool! Yes, the crazy lady coming out in me. We've worked hard to get to this point, have had two house payments for 10 months, UGH...hard to save for these things and when that house sells I want to jump into a pool not a bigger 3 point hitch tractor! :) Sure, one day, when I'm hauling 50 pound bags of fertilizer around I might regret it, but nah. So, here I go, check is in the mail from the state, it's burning a hole in my pocket and I'm going to go check out that scag and see if I can't talk the Kubota team down on price....that John Deere 727A...it's got 23 hp and they will put a hitch on it (not 3 point just a drop in which I could use on the rare occasion)...I'm not sure if that's the right model but I know it had 23hp and a 54 inch deck with 7 gauge steel welded deck..I'll need to make sure I'm comparing apples to apples. Y'all have given me great direction and suggestions..I'm going into this much more informed and able to choose a mower that will atleast give me 10 years..by then I may make that tractor purchase...I've got a friend down the road that has 150 acres and is selling it all..hoping I might score a little tractor off him! :) I'll post a pic of what I get next week! As you know it always means so much when a real gardener offers a compliment. :-) Annette it is so funny that you were admiring the rocks. If you notice in the first couple of before pictures there were no rocks. I drug all those stupid things in from the forest myself. Four of them a neighbor with a track hoe pulled in for me. He made a comment about " 'why would anyone want all that crap in the yard..." I've mulled that question over a few times myself. LOL Thank you very much for the compliment. It makes it all worth while.

What is your take on the track and snow amounts on the storm tomorrow? Every forecaster is different. I've seen or heard everything from 1-3 inches for us to 9-13 inches. One forecaster said the two main computer models are almost 200 miles off on the predicted track. Sorry, we were doing kid stuff yesterday afternoon & I was off-line. I was surprised to hear the 1-3" forecasts yesterday, as the low hit the coast way down over SoCal and no evidence of a northerly track, and you see it today over SoNM and making TX unhappy. The old guys who taught me were always skeptical of model runs and relied on patterns and their memories - our forecast meetings always had a question for the experienced forecasters: 'what was your first guess' and much more often than not the first 'guess' was the one that verified. That said, the next bad boy out there off the coast has somewhat less energy as the one last week, not quite as deep or moist but could have winds that rival last weeks' if it doesn't fill while over water. Folks with animals need to start watching the forecasts closely as they'll start to be vulnerable if these next ~two weeks' worth of storms start to swing up north of Albuquerque and take the spring storm tracks, which should come earlier this year. The Aleutian low looks like it wants to set up too far offshore, and that means the surface lows that come ashore come south and swing up thru NM. So far they've been way south, but as time goes on they move N. If you are running short of hay and were going to go in a couple weeks, you may want to think about going sooner rather than later if you have room. That's how it looks like it is shaping up today. Can you take a train to Grand Central Station? From there, it's an 8 block walk to the Empire State Bldg. Then from the Empire State, walk over to Lexington and get the 4 or 5 subway to Broadway/Nassau St. Or grab a cab and go to Ground Zero.

The NY subway is really easy to figure out. It's alot cheaper than a cab. I use a cab, though, later at night. They're abundant.

I think the subway is very easy to figure out. I always feel safe riding it during daylight or evening. Never ridden late at night.

The best way is to take a New Jersey Transit train in from somewhere in New Jersey (there are a lot of stations, so pick one that is easy for you to get to). NJ Transit puts you into Penn Station. You can probably walk from Penn Station to the Empire State building (they are not that far apart, but I've never walked it). There are a few subway lines that will get you close to Ground Zero. The 1 (one) is the the the line I am most familiar with.

I live in South Jersey and always take NJ Transit when I go into the city. I get on in Trenton and take the Northeast Corridor line into Penn Station which is conveniently located- you can walk to the Empire State Building easily but you'd need to take a cab or subway to Ground Zero.

New Jersey Transit has a good web site that you can check. The closest station to you is probably Port Jervis, NY (we have a vacation house just across the river in Milford, PA in Pike County). But that would be a fairly long train ride and you probably would be more comfortable in your car. So I would drive further into New Jersey and pick a train station that's closer to the city.

I can't help you with parking at the Statue of Liberty- I've been there but it's always been with a bus load of elementary school kids.

Maybe someone else will have a better idea.

When Lori and I went to NYC, we took the Amtrak train, and then in NYC we went everywhere by subway. It was quick, never stuck in traffic.
Not that hard to figure out for two gals, that don't live where there are any subways. ;)

Check out NJ Transit's web site---

Click on Schedules and Fares
Click on Trains
Click on Map of NJ Rail System (this will help you pick which station you want to drive to)
Click on Rider Guide
Click on Park and Ride (lists parking facilities and how many cars can park there)

Some stations have more spaces than others and the closer you get to NY City the fewer spots might be available if you arrive later in the morning. Some of the lots close at certain hours so you should check that before leaving your car.

You can also call NJ Transist on the phone, they have an 800 number and they can be helpful.
