The Percy Williams Actors Home (interesting bit of history)

Here's a picture my father took of the Percy Williams Actors Home on Long Island, where my grandmother (an opera singer) retired to for several years before developing severe dementia. It was a beautiful place. Its grounds were planted with trees and shrubs from all over the world. I have especially fond memories of the Lilies of the Valley, which perfumed large areas.

And here's an article from 1973 about the place and its closing. I found it interesting, especially the parts about its various residents . . . like the man who became orphaned at age 10 and joined the circus, learning to juggle bowling balls (which eventually injured him). And the 93-year-old woman who is quoted as saying, ". . . the majority of older people, I'm sorry to say, are not very interesting."
