Did I just ruin my fruit trees with Miracle Gro All Purpose??
Comments (7)Some form of nitrogen will generally help trees in average soil establish more quickly, but a quarter pound of actual N. for a small tree could be damaging to the tender roots, I'm guessing. However, I am not speaking from the experience of this particular mistake- I have only damaged more sensitive plants with surface applications of excessive N- never fruit trees. Depends in part on texture of soil, in sandy soil your are more likely to scorch the roots- especially if the tree isn't mulched. Heavy watering can leach out the fertilizer in a hurry....See MoreDid I just ruin my lawn with too much fertilizer?
Comments (25)"tiemco, I see your point on getting any nitrogen off the blades. What is your rational for accelerating so much nitrogen into the soil/root zone? Wont that be detrimental?" No. Sure you are going to get tons of growth, but I'll take that over burn any day. It's about a month early for the spring feeding above the transition zone, so all that nitrogen shouldn't stress the grass too much (not sure where the OP lives), Just be sure you mow often enough to keep it at the level you want. Nitrogen is fairly transient in most soils, so some will leach away as well. Fertilizer burn happens because the fert ingredients are salts, and with only a small amount of water around, like dew, the salts pull water out of your grass, basically dehydrates it. If you give it a good watering you prevent this from happening. "So if I understand tiemco, he is recommending AGAINST the Scott's Plus-2." Yes, I am against Weed and Feed products for a few reasons. They make you apply synthetic fertilizer to wet grass without watering it in. They make you combine applying synth. fertilizer at the same time you want to kill weeds. What if I want to kill weeds in early April? They make you apply weed killer in dry form (liquid form is much better) and to the whole lawn, even if you only have weeds in some areas. It's much better to apply liquid weed killers directly to the weeds. If your whole lawn has weeds throughout, then get the appropriate product (Weed B Gone Max is great for most lawn weeds, CCO should handle the rest) and apply it with a hose end sprayer. If you only have a few weeds in your yard, use a tank sprayer and apply the weed killer directly to those weeds. You will get better results and use much less chemical. Weed and Feed sells so well because most people are gullible and lazy. They want to do the least work possible, and they believe everything that it says on the bag. People see that and are like "All I have to do is one application and I'm done? I'll take it!" The best thing Weed and Feed does is make money for Scotts....See MoreDid I just ruin my geranium for the summer?
Comments (3)The cutting back of annuals is recognized as a way to encourage re-development of bloom since, by doing so, we stop the plant thinking its job of producing bloom is over and thus, begins to produce seeds. With perenanisls, that can be quite different....they produce one flowering...and only one. They do not respond the same way annuals do. So the cranesbill is not a pelargonium...it blooms as it can, when it can and then ...that's it, game over. Cutting it back while in bloom is not how to force it to create more....or better volumes. Better to cut it back AFTER blooming to force it to grow more compactly, giving less to create more....See MoreWriters Interviewing Writers
Comments (10)Yes, I'm sure the answers could've been found by reading the book, but that's not the point. When you write an article, you can't just quote from a book or say "Jane Doe's book says...." I wish it was that easy. But editors, and readers, love quotes. Sometimes I feel like I'm "quote fishing". And I know not every writer's scrupulous about using quotes correctly and in context. I personally know someone in the insurance industry who was burned by an unscrupulous writer with an agenda. I hate people like that; they make every other writer's job even harder. But we can't do as Trudi suggested and provide the article for review before it's printed. That leads to more trouble than it's worth, it's unprofessional, and can be unethical. I'm not a well-known writer, but I know that prospective sources have Googled me to find out if I can be trusted to do quality work with their precious words and reputation. The questions themselves, since you're so curious, were nothing big. The article in question was about landscape trees, so I wanted to know things like "biggest mistakes you see", "trees you'd like to see used more often", etc. A landscaper, an arborist, and a nature activist gave me all I needed....See More
