I recently read War Brides by Helen Ryan and enjoyed it. Historical fiction. The book starts in contemporary times with an older woman leading a group of tourists to England. She and 3 other women who haven't seen each other since WWII are meeting up in the village where they met during the war. Circumstances brought these 4 very different women together and they are returning to address some unfinished business.

girl wonder, some books I've found useful and enjoyed: Interior Design Master Class: 100 Lessons from America's Finest Designers on the Art of Decoration by Carl Dellatore: "Creating a library-worthy resource on design, the volume’s editor, Carl Dellatore, recruited one hundred top American interior designers to contribute essays on a particular aspect of design, interspersed with examples of their work. Useful for both aficionados and professionals, the volume reveals the meticulous and often heady process that goes into creating great interiors." There's a very good good write-up and interview with the author at the design blog Quintessence. Habitat: The Field Guide to Decorating by decorator Lauren Liess (who is basically self-taught, which is why she calls herself a decorator rather than an interior designer), who has a great blog (not updated much anymore) where she has explained her choices and decisions. Mary Gilliatt's Interior Design Course by Mary Gilliatt Domino: The Book of Decorating: A Room-by-Room Guide to Creating a Home That Makes You Happy by Deborah Needleman The Perfectly Imperfect Home: How to Decorate and Live Well by Deborah Needleman A few of the interior design books I've picked up in the past few years, which gave me a greater sense of appreciation for what interior designers and decorators do: The Interior Design Reference & Specification Book: Everything Interior Designers Need to Know Every Dayby Linda O'Shea, Chris Grimley, Mimi Love Interior Design Course: Principles, Practices, and Techniques for the Aspiring Designer by Tomris Tangaz Some earlier helpful threads in the GardenWeb Home Decorating forum: Where to go for "Home Decorating 101"? Perfect example of the art and frustrations of parsing kids' taste in literature. Oddly, I remember being "forced" to read some books in third grade for a book report, and I really didn't want to. They were biographies and I couldn't imagine how Ralph Bunche and Galileo could have had interesting lives, (I know!). I learned the lesson of stretching myself when it came to reading, and picking "outside the box" books and giving them a chance. Also not judging a book by its cover, since Ralph Bunche in a grey suit didn't convey the amazing achievements of the man, and nothing says, "dead boring old guy" like a painting of Galileo. I became a fan of both men though, after reading the books. I scratch my head when I think of some of my choices back then, I was all over the board. Still am I guess.

Oh wow, you guys are the best. I'm going to print this off and go do some research. I'm especially interested in the Redwall series Bestyears motioned - a 22 book series would be great for her. I did think of a series a really enjoyed when I was a young reader - The Chronicles of Narnia. Once I put them in my cart on Amazon, it started suggesting other books and I actually found quite a few possible contenders - but it's also great to have first hand recommendations here. I might try to find out a bit more about what her favorite books are, even if I just have one or two examples. I would never want to insult her intelligence by buying her something too juvenile. Thank you again! PS - James Herriot is a good idea too, I don't know why I didn't think of that. I remember my Dad (another animal lover) reading some of those books.

The Witness by Nora Roberts. I keeps you on the end of your seat from the beginning to the end.

I'm reading Gone Girl, and it's the best book I've read in many years. Also What Alice Forgot is another winner. Two great books back to back. GG is number 1 on NYTimes list.

Lily316... I just reserved Gone Girl at my library, I am number 359 on the list, haha, so maybe next year! What Alice Forgot is available, though and I will pick that one up today.
Eileen.... I cannot find The Witness in my library's records online, I will have to go to Barnes and Noble I guess.

Jenna..I recommended Gone Girl to my librarian and when she put it on the list, she was 299. I went to the authors website and told her how much I liked her book and recommended it to so many and received a nice thank you from her. I reserved her other two books as well.

I read Defending Jacob. It was good, husband didn't like it though.

I'm now reading Before I go to Sleep..S J Watson. Another amnesia book but am liking it so far.

lily316: I did the same thing. Ordered Flynn's two previous books after reading Gone Girl. She did win awards in the mystery genre for both. I have finished Dark Places, which is quite good. Looking forward to Sharp Objects in my TBR pile now.

Lily, I just read Before I Go To Sleep and enjoyed it. Amazing story isn't it. I know it is fiction, but loosely based on the lives of 2 real people.

Also recently read Julie and Romeo by Jeanne Ray - easy fun summer romance for seniors :)

I read Before I Go To Sleep. I thought it was okay. It got a little repetitive for me, and I didn't think the writing was all that good, but I thought it was a good summer vacation type of book. It sure was a nail biter and I had fun trying to figure out what was really going on throughout the book. I can't remember a book that ever got my heart pumping like the end of that one did!

My daughter put Gone Girl on her Kindle and sent it to my I-Pad, and phone. I enjoyed it a lot!! Highly recommend it.

Jenn..I'm only 1/4 way thru the book ,and it's good but not nearly as good as Gone Girl. I should be the author's publicist. I've gotten so many people reading it...lol. Daughter just downloaded it to her Nook.

Jenna, The Witness is a fairly new book. However, our library has had it for about a month now. Tomorrow I pick up Gone Girl from the library..it's taken a while to be able to get it. I read Defending Jacob, also, and I truly liked it.
Right now I'm reading Black Hill by Nora Roberts. Almost done and it's quite good...kind of a romance that turns into a big mystery.

Not My Kid by Mary Billiter is REALLY good. I'm having trouble putting it down and I'm almost through it.
