Kid's book recommendations?

I asked a while ago and got some great recommendations, but my grandson is older now and I thought I'd see if anyone could give me ideas. (I also will check with the librarian, but like real life expertise, too).

He's 9, he has pretty advanced reading abilities but does not like creepy or scary things. We are just now reading Harry Potter and it might be just a bit too ??? for him, but for now we're sticking with it. I think he'll like it, but I can tell he's a little anxious that it's going to be scary, so I am reading it to/with him for now.

He LOVED the Notebook of Doom series and all the 13 Story Treehouse books (which are more graphic stories than actual novels). I haven't tried Diary of a Wimpy Kid yet, but it's on my list. He's kind of becoming interested in "spy" things, so any suggestions for that genre?

He's got a great and pretty sophisticated sense of humor, too. So funny is good. Not so much bathroom humor, but a little is ok.
