Oh no, Sue. Not the black raspberries!! That's not only expensive but an overall loss. What a good dinner that turkey and a raspberry pie would have been. :-(

I've never lost any frozen food even when we had a couple of years in a row when we were without electricity for 4-5 days due to hurricanes. Our dear neighbor hooked our frig/freezer up to his generator. No lights, no air conditioning, no water except what we gathered in advance but our food stayed safe.

never left anything open, but when we had the "big" power outage several years go (whole ne states), we lost everything, sigh! what a mess that was..we'd found a sam's club that was open and bought several bags of ice, but it wasn't enough...

my sis used to have freezer in the garage, but kept the key in the lock just in case, i guess...maybe she'd had a problem...

Many years ago, I came home from a trip to find that the construction workers building a house next door to me had fried my electric meter and cut all power to my house. Luckily, I was a renter and my landlord had been notified. He had already cleaned all of the food out of the freezer and refrigerator and put in a claim for reimbursement for me. So the lost food part was pretty painless for me.

However, the rest of the story wasn't much fun. You see, my return home was at night in pouring rain. I couldn't figure out why the garage door opener didn't work. I left the car in the driveway and, getting soaked in the process, entered the house through the front door to find that I had no electricity. I had no idea what was going on, so I left and spent the night in a hotel. Luckily, I had clean clothes left in my suitcase. It wasn't until I went to work the next day and contacted my landlord that I heard the whole story.

I'm thankful that I owned no electronics back then so nothing was fried by the power surge. The refrigerator never worked very well after that, though. I donated it to a local charity during my next move.

It happened to us and we lost some expensive cuts of meat. Our new fridge has an alarm if the doors are open for more than a minute.

I am so sorry about this. I came home one day and the freezer door (lid) was up. Someone had come thru the mudroom, into the garage and stole something, and left the lid up. Did not loose anything, but sure made me mad.

Too late, after the fact, Cheryl discovered their upright freezer does have an alarm, but was not turned on! When we owned the big two story old school building, I had a refrigerator in the basement and it had a nice sized freezer in the top. I had stored I think 3 big turkeys in it. Well, our son unplugged it because he needed the extension cord as they were working on the building. Some days later we started smelling something a little at a time and it got worse. Oh when I discovered it it was horrible. It was like having a dead body in the basement. We could never get the smell out of the refrigerator and we got rid of it. We once had a power outage that lasted a week. The electric company passed out packages of dry ice and that saved things in our freezer. Now we have a generator if we need it. Yes, Patti, no black raspberries were picked this year as they got mowed last year! Probably won't be any next year and Cheryl did have most of what we did have on hand in her freezer. I do have a few.

A year and a half we took ownership of a big tom cat named Buster. The morning after he came to live with us, we woke up to find the bottom cupboards doors open and the fridge and freezer doors wide open. It was in December and we kept the Apt fairly cool at night, so just the ice cream was sort of soft, but not much else. I seem to remember using up a couple packages of hamburger that day. We were concerned that he would be doing this all the time so I rigged up some fasteners so he couldn't open up the fridge and freezer for a while, but we got lacks in fastening them, and he never did that again with them but still gets into all of the cupboards. We, as indulgent parents admired at how intelligent our Buster is. LOL

I had to put a big ol sign on my fridge that said Close Me",Dh had a bad habit of not pushing it enough for it to close all the way,did the same with the freezer.Can't tell you how many times i had to throw out popsicles and that type of stuff that thaws fast.He finally got the message after the sign and the day i told him he had to clean it all out.

He also leaves cabinet doors open,my DD tells me "mom,it's a man thing!!"

Yes.......Been there- done that! Poured the liquid content down the sewer and power-washed the freezer. What a smell! what a mess!
