Have you ever bought a book and after you get it home find out someone you know has contributed to it.

Today in another town I went to Goodwill and bought a cookbook, Belgian Draft Horse Corporation of America Presents More Than Just Oats. While looking through it, after I got home, I find recipes by a woman that my husband went to school with many years ago and I find several recipes by a woman that I went to school with for 12 years and graduated with. This was not a recent book but one that has probably been in print for about 14 or 15 years.

Some years back I bought an old church cookbook, I love those, and while looking though it I found a recipe put in by my now 95 year old neighbor! When I bought it, I didn't even know her.

Last year I bought another old cookbook and two recipes were in it from another classmate of mine and we graduated from school together. My class only had about 27 kids in it.

I am always happy to find the name of someone I know in a cookbook. Has this ever happened to any of you?

I was looking around an old used book store in a different town.....ran across Recipes from the Copper Country.
I picked it up and found that is was from the small town in the UP of Michigan where my DH was born.
Most of the recipes were from people I had heard his parents talk about a lot. It was a whopping $2 and I gave it to DH for his birthday.
I also find a lot of cookbooks at thrift shops from churches and other organizations from our area. I love seeing recipes from some of the elderly patients I had taken care of when I was working in the hospital and the doc's office.

No, I have never had that happen. Kinda neat though.

I raised my kids in the days of "no computer-cell phone-text messages"so I never had this happen but I do remember living in this big ole long house and being in the kitchen when my hub's would call for me....I'd trudge all the way to the livingroom only to have him ask me to change tv (in the time of dinosuar before remotes)channels..with the tv not 12 ft. away from him. No he's not one of "those" kinda husbands....he thought he was being funny.....Not! My neighbor will call me from his cell phone to say he's on our porch rather than knock on the door. Peggy

Toni, you hit it right on the nail!!! Your right, just so happens that this particular plant is growing in soiless mix in which the particles of bark are a little to big and there is lots of air space. This is the first and only plant I planted in this batch of soil when I first started to learn how to make it. I know I made it incorrectly, because the particle sizes are too big. All my other soil I made, I used smaller particles of bark which has worked perfect for me. And now that I perfected it, I should repot thsi tree in spring into the perfected soiless that stays moist a little longer than a day at a time...lol All my other plants in this perfected soiless mix can go for a 2-3 days under lots of light which I provide all winter, but this Calamondin tree is in a soil that I have to watch and wet everyday. I suppose to much air getting into the soil. A couple of times I forgot to water, and I think instead of the tree wilting, the leaves just go into shock and dry up hard on the branch because they are thicker older leaves. With this tree, you can never tell if it doesn't have enough water, because it doesn't wilt when too dry like my other trees! Since I have been watching this one more closely, and watering everyday now, I am not loosing anymore leaves. YES!!! See, I guess we can hurt a tree from underwatering too... :-) Thanks alot everyone for all your help and thoughts!

I've had some weep (the blueberry-black currant from the bottled juice) after they set up, esp. after opening and putting in the fridge. Some rings seem to loosen in the canner or maybe when I was lifting them out, but this is the first time I've *ever* had one come off! The liquid on top was very clear and the grape jelly was set, the clear liquid on the sealed jars pretty much totally filled the headspace which is why I'm thinking it was water? Then again this batch was more grapes, fewer apples, and the apples were really tart. I'm going to have to see if the others are weeping - wouldn't there be some in all of them if that was it?

One time in my younger days, I was walking down the sidewalk and was passing a parked car. In that car was a young couple and a prattling baby. The man was in the driver's seat and the young woman was holding the child with her window open. Just as I pass by, the baby looking out the side window, brightens, and loudly coos, "Daddy, Daddy" in my direction. I was embarrased and kept walking, but I couldn't help notice the man looking at his wife, and then at me. These people were complete stangers to me, and I never learned what the outcome was - It could have been interesting.

It hasn't happened to me but I received a book a while ago that contained stories and anecdotes about Harry Kalas, the long time and much beloved announcer for the Philadelphia Phillies who passed away early last year. At the end the author added a note to look for an upcoming book 'For Phillies Fans Only' and asked for any funny stories about chance encounters with players or anything amusing having to do with the Phillies ball club. I sent in something funny I heard during a broadcast years ago. The author phoned me at home and said it would probably be in the book!!!

Also two years ago I got an email saying that an independent film was being made about nurses in the Vietnam War. It stars Faye Dunaway, Amy Acker, Ben Vereen, Tom Sizemore and others. It takes place at the 24th Evac Hospital and I was actually stationed there. They asked for photo's of what the place looked like and I emailed 6 or 8 of them. I was told that I will get a 'Special Thanks' screen credit at the end of the movie. It has been released in limited areas - not here yet - but I'll be interested to see my name, hopefully, if it ever gets here. Between you & me I don't think it was very well received. Maybe it'll make it to DVD at least.

I haven't accidentally come across people I know in books but I do know some people that have written books about their lives. I also know some of the contributors to the Red Hat Lady Cookbook but that would be expected.

DS was once surprised to find himself mentioned in a book.

The closest I came to something like that was when someone who was giving an interview to someone mentioned me. Actually DS stumbled across it on the internet when he was a young teen. LOL "Mom, ____ talked about you in his interview with ____."

Never happened to me. But I love community cookbooks. Everything is "tried and true." I have two community cookbooks. i bought them at garage sales. Both are go-to references.

Good to hear all of your stories, I will always pick a church or community cookbook over the others. I have also bought different books not realizing the author had also autographed them.
