I was searching for a particular out-of-print book this morning, and one of the hits I got (using a Google search) was http://www.betterworldbooks.com/. I ordered the book I was looking for, it said "good used" condition, for about four dollars and shipping is free. Then, when I'd completed the order (I paid with Paypall but they also accept credit cards), I was presented with a screen that said that they had just donated a book in my name.

So I went reading a little more and I am really impressed with this company. First, they have a banner at the top of their page that indicates:

Almost 1 million books donated
Almost 15 million dollars raised for literacy and libraries
Over 110 million books reused or recycled

You can go to the link I put at the bottom of this post, to get to their page that tells about their projects and the social impact they are having.

Again, I really like this company, and thought many of the readers here might like it too.

They've even got a form where you can sign up to donate books. Apparently this all started from a book drive on someone's part. And if you donate books, they pay all the shipping costs for you.

Unless something strange is going on with Shi-Un, it is not a climber. It just appears to be growing rather tall. It is on the south side of the tree so it is getting plenty of sun. The bottom part of the bush is in the picture, and the top of it sticking out at the lower level is taller than I am. Boulie's Dream only has a light fragrance to my nose. It does have a good supply of flowers when it blooms in flushes. It also wants to get quite tall.

I would like to save that to be able to listen to it whenever I feel the need to. I think his outlook on life didn't come from knowing he will die...it showed up a long time ago. Like him telling about picking up his neice and nephew in his new car and pouring the soda in the back seat. I think his wife was really lucky to have had him as a husband. WOW what a guy. Oh, yes, I think everyone's had this experience. It often happens when you've been told about a family story so often that you think you remember it, even though you weren't much more than a baby at the time. Have you ever read anything by Elizabeth Loftus about memory creation? Scary stuff.

If anybody gives that new Hurricane spin mop a try, post back as to how it worked for you (or didn't!). There has been an infomercial on it recently. I dislike probably ever mop I've bought -- the string mop, the mop that has strips of a felt-like microfiber (like the Wonder Mop, like Libman makes), the sponge mop (I can never get the replacement sponges in easily). I don't use Swiffers anymore, but I do use a Libman Freedom Soft Mop, with the cloths you pull off the mop head and toss into the washing machine. I have purchased books from Better World Books for years. Have never been dissatisfied.

I didn't know that about them. I guess I can stop being annoyed when they underprice me on Amazon. :-)

Well, I'm back to being annoyed about their underpricing. This morning they went through my listings (and probably everyone else's) and relisted their books to sell for one penny less. This is common on Amazon, but I find it cheesy.

BetterWorld has sold 1,420,712 books on Amazon (so far), but they have a feedback rating of only 95% That's poor. They say the same thing about every book ("Great condition for a used book! Minimal wear....") and give no details about the condition. That could be why people leave negative ratings about them--too many unpleasant surprises when the books arrive.

I hope they're really doing those good deeds.

I did get the two books that I ordered through them. Both were books that are no longer in print and both were in good condition. There were no surprises in my case.
