Last night, after having yet another miserable day at work, I stopped at the grocery for a few things.
Including Ben & Jerry's Vanilla Caramel Fudge.
"Emotional eating," anybody?
It's just a sweet, sweet memory now...

One summer I ate a single vanilla ice cream cone every day. My favorite flavor is still plain ol vanilla.

Yup, I LOVE ice cream. In the past, I posted pictures of me and my friend Esther eating a half gallon ice cream at the Braums ice cream store. :)

We usually do Chocolate Almond, as it is a flavor we both like.

My all time fav is Cappuccino Chunky Chocolate Frozen Yoghurt on a waffle cone. :)

Second best: Eddies French Silk, some grocery stores here abouts have it.

I can take or leave ice cream, as is with most sweets.
My favourite is vanilla. I had black licorice when I was a kid, visiting in B.C. Loved that! The closest I've been able to find around here at all is Tiger Tail.

Also really liked maple walnut as a kid. I probably would still like it.

dotmom -- Unfortunately, your story of eating ice cream every night reminds me of a childhood friend who always battled her weight. She couldn't seem to lose that 'baby fat'. A breakthrough came when she realized that she and her father had established a sort of bonding 'ritual', sharing big dishes of ice cream every night before bedtime. He was depressed and fat, and she was fat.

My favorite ice cream is Roselani's Chocolate Mac Nut. It's probably a good thing it's not sold here! I have to 'make do' with Ben & Jerry's until we get to Hawaii.

I don't want 'quantity' ice cream. I want a little that has great flavor. Same with chocolate -- a small piece of GOOD stuff hits the spot.

If they would take the calories out I would have
Bluebell homemade vanilla icecream several times a day.

Friend and I went to yogurt place and had old fashioned chocolate yogurt. Really tasty and drizzled chocolate fudge sauce on top.

My favorites are lemon custard and coffee. I used to be able to find lemon custard every summer, but not any longer. I do miss it.

I actually can take it or leave it most of the time. But if I am taking it....I want really good Butter Pecan (perhaps with chocolate sauce or dark chocolate sauce) or Maple Walnut. YUM!! Just a spoonful or two is enough to keep me happy.

I go in spurts. But I do like the Blue Bunny brand. Love vanilla with chocolate syrup, nuts and the cherry on the top. But do love the real maple ice cream in Vermont or any mixture, Not picky ==depends on my mood

DH has a bowl of ice cream every night while watching television. I indulge about half the time. At home I usually have Jamocha Almond Fudge or Ben & Jerry's Chunky Monkey. But when he can talk me into going out for ice cream, my favorite is Coldstone Creamery's "Sweet Cream". For most of my life I did not consider vanilla a flavor. I used to say "That's ice cream BEFORE they put the flavoring in".

I love it when I was a kid in Chicago we would get ice cream cones at the drug store and in the bottom of each was a little piece of paper and if lucky it said you got a free one next time. The same thing with Good Humor Bars .
I love butter pecan. I get those little bags of small cups of vanilla and plop one or two in a mug and fill it up with root beer and make a "Black Cow" (what we called them in the old days)

I used to eat ice cream more than I do now. I won't turn down a trip to the DQ, but I don't eat it at home much anymore.

Lately, I have been eating more cookies than ice cream!! Got to be homemade though! LOL!

I can take it or leave it. I have Neapolitan and vanilla in the freezer right now, but rarely eat it. The grand kids make shakes with it, so that's why I buy it. If I DO eat it, I prefer Blue Bunny vanilla with maraschino cherries and real whipped cream on top. I really prefer to make fresh fruit smoothies with plain or vanilla yogurt.

We used to eat ice cream every night when I was growing up.

Blue Bell has a factory locally. We've been there to tour and eat ice cream. My favorite is Moolenium Crounch. I also sometimes buy basic vanilla so we can add bananas, chocolate and caramel syrup, nuts, and whip cream.

Not a huge fan, but if it is in the fridge I'll eat it.

Growing up, we used to get our milk from a store called Hoods (in Maryland). They also had an ice cream counter and my favorite was Butter Brickle. Loved it! Nowadays to save some calories, I eat a small custard cup of Orange Sherbert. If we go to the local ice cream shop, I like anything that has cheesecake in it.

Now in our 60's I'm splurging on the "fancier" stuff,
Ben & Jerry's, Hagen Daz, other names I forget now....
Anyway, small amounts of extra special flavors....
We're loving it...mmmmm.

I try to confine myself to one half gallon container per summer and try to make it last for several weeks. My favorite flavor is made by the local dairy and is called Purple Cow -- dark rasberry with semi sweet and white chocolate chunks. It's to die for.

I meant to mention, that there are few companies that make real ice cream nowadays.

We have a couple of Canadian companies.....Chapman's being one, that do make real ice cream.

I've looked at Breyers and other brands, and they say Frozen Dessert on the front. Not ice cream, and there is no milk in the ingredient list.

Ice cream is a staple in this house. Years ago it was the rich premium kind. These days it is always low or no fat and sugar free. Blue Bunny makes some acceptable flavors. I am an occasional eater. DH enjoys it almost daily in some form. Fudge Bars, sandwiches, creamsicles plus a carton or 2 of ice cream will always occupy space in our freezer. Last week our Rita's Italian Ice closed for good. Our Brusters closed last year, so we are left with just Dairy Queen for our weekly summer treat out.

I do like black walnut, but like most ice cream. I seldom eat it. I had to look in my kitchen freezer to see what flavor my Blue Bell ice cream was. It is called, Kentucky Delight, says, brown sugar ice cream with dark chocolate chunks, roasted walnut pieces, pie crust pieces, and a caramel sauce! It still is a half gallon container. It says it is the Bluegrass State flavor. It has been months since I ate any. I might have to have a little of that later on.

Kayjones, is that the same as Whitehouse? That was my great Aunt Marie's favorite! I remember eating many a bowl of it with her. Thanks for that memory.

Minnie -- DH and I suddenly have a craving for a couple of Black Cows. lol In the East they call them Root Beer Floats, but they'll always be Black Cows to us! We don't remember any cones with 'freebie' coupons though. DH grew up in the western suburbs (Petersen's Ice Cream) and I was northwest.

Lots of 'ice cream' isn't 'cream-y', just sugar and *something*. There's a lot of air whipped into most brands too.

Dotmom -- Intresting how your thread has touched so many of us, isn't it? Now I'm remembering that the waiter where my father took me for lunch in the city never needed to be told to bring me New York Cherry. (That IS an old memory; I was only three to seven.)

MY favorite was Lemon custard,however i havn't found that in years.
So my favorite now is butter pecan.In fact when i was in the hospital 3 years ago my dil came to see me,and somehow we got on the subject of ice cream.I said i'd love to have some butter pecan and couldn't wait to go home and have some.

She left saying she had to go to the bank before it closed,then she came cack and she had stopped and got 1/2 gal of butter pecan,asked the store for extra cups and spoons and brought it back to me,so she and i and whoever was there at the time had our bowls of ice cream.Now that's what you call a sweet and thoughtful DIL.

I grew up in NY state and hersheys was the big ice cream maker.We could go to the store and get a 10 or 15 cent ice cream sandwich,and they'd bring out that log of ice cream,cut off how much we wanted and put it on those waffle sandwiches.Yummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

I'd love to have that again.

I grew up in the Chicago area. Black cows were a staple of summer! My parents mainly bought Walgreens ice cream, not very good as I recall but no doubt inexpensive. A special treat was visiting the Good Humor man who parked his truck at a local corner. Another ice cream truck came regularly down the street and all the kids ran out. I also remember those little tubs of vanilla ice cream that came with a wooden spoon--I remember the taste of that spoon! Every so often I get a craving for a Dairy Queen Blizzard--so good going down, but then I usually feel somewhat ill afterward.

Love, love ice cream. We make homemade for family gatherings. We buy Blue Bell the rest of the time. I would eat it everyday if I could afford the calories. It is one of the few foods I crave.

Marita40's post brought to mind when my 3 kids were very young and the ice cream truck would drive down our neighborhood street with some kind of jingly song being played out of a loud speaker. At that time I wanted very badly to commit some mayhem on the driver because he seemed to come down out street during nap time. LOL Did/do they still drive around neighborhoods anywhere?

My husband has a fascination with a flavor called "Tutti Fruity". He used to eat it as a kid. Can't find it in grocery stores or ice cream shopps anymore. I bought an electric ice cream freezer. It uses crushed ice (also hard to find),and I found a recipe for Tutti Fruiti online. Eggs,cream,sugar and fruit. I made about 2 quarts. It was lots of work but hubby was so happy. I still like Vanilla, yeah, the absence of flavor.

I grew up with fresh homemade vanilla...the kind that you had to crank the handle...made with junkets!!we had cows so the cream was fresh and readily available..Mom really moved up when the siblings bought her an electric one...I have one too but haven't used it in years...I don't know why Mom never added fruit cause it was always available too...She did make a hot fudge sauce that was to die for...I've managed to learn to make it as well...it's basically just Hershey's cocoa with some sugar and water...but it's sooo good!!

I can take or leave it...every now and then hubster has a craving for DQ...My weakness was Godiva Chocolate...thank goodness the local grocery doesn't carry it any longer...i'd be fatter then I already am!!

I haven't seen a Good Humor truck in ages. I'd guess there are several reasons. One being that we now live in the era of "Be Afraid. Be Very Afraid" that keeps kids indoors lest the boogie man get 'em. (There are no more pedophiles now than ever, IMO.) Gas prices are probably another reason. And...all the mothers are at work during daylight hours when the truck would circulate through a neighborhood.

The last Good Humor truck I recall seeing regularly was parked at an intersection between two forest preserves west of Winnetka (Illinois). HIkers and bikers would stop for an ice cream.

marita -- Oh, ick, the wooden paddle! Kids who brought their lunches could buy a carton of milk and one of those cups at my grammar school. (Back when mothers were home all day, and most kids went home for lunch.)

When I was a kid, they sold "Skippy Cups", vanilla or chocolate or a layer of each. Came with a wooden spoon. I must have eaten a thousand of them as a kid. We used to buy them at the local candy store for 5 cents. Store is now gone, replaced by a highway.

Chuise, the Good Humor man we frequented was also at the edge of a forest preserve: Bemis woods on Ogden Ave. in LaGrange Park. There were a few park benches, as I recall, for people to sit and eat. I understand he was there up to just a few years ago. I don't think it was Good Humor who came down our street, however. Maybe it was Blue Bell? We didn't like it as much as Good Humor!

Oh, Tooti Fruity. Funny.....years ago at a house party and we played The Newly Wed Game. The men went first, and were asked what flavor ice cream best describes your wife. My guess was, strawberry, all pretty and pink. His answer was Tutti Fruity. LOL He was more correct!!

Braums had a sale! one dollar off, for two containers.... and today was the last day. :)

Donna we must be related!. Jamocha Almond fudge is my altime favorite flavor. If you can find the Starbucks one ..its the best coffee flavor.

Love butter almond and chocolate combined. I also feel plain ice cream is waiting for the good stuff to be added. Want all the goodies "in" the ice cream not just on top.

My family says we have an "ice cream gene". My husband only eats plain vanilla. We only touch that when the good flavors are gone. May be a couple weeks later but we'll get to it. Then a few more weeks later, he'll begin to think about having some and wonder what happened.

That is my one weakness, I have to have Tillamook chocolate and peanut butter! My mouth is watering just thinking about it!!
