I'm not surprised that Igloo would not want to respond. It is a 'cooler', an 'ice-box',... But thermally can be used for heat if careful...a hot from the oven casserole should not be placed directly, but laying a blanket or towel first will keep it steamy and continue to cook a bit for travel... I doubt they would want to be endorsing its use as a hot cooking vessel on the web. Looking at my cooler on the deck, ready to be packed soon for a long weekend travel... i think if i wanted to use it for corn for a crowd, i would simmer what fits in my pasta pot with insert for 5min, then cary out just a few steps to the cooler and lay them in, then start another batch using the same water and insert, and re-peat till cooler is full. They would be evenly cooked and stay warm and continue to steam... Only if i had to travel or had no other way to heat just before serving... Last weekend i did soak a half dozen ears for a couple hours in spring water in the husk and put them on the smoker far end. Delish and smokey, the husk was near black but corn was just slightly smoked and steamy...Florida corn, not local fresh yet...

I live in Oklahoma where it is difficult if not impossible to have some corn ear worms when it comes time to harvest. I fight them organically, but have some anyway. At harvest I take a sharp knife to the garden and cut off both ends of the corn pull off the shucks and as much of the silk that comes off readily. Once I get about a half bushel I take the corn to my wife in the house and she completes the cleaning process and parboils the ears for about 3 minutes and then cools in cold water. Parboiling stops the process of sugar being converted to starch. Once cooled we vacuum pack and put in the freezer. When ready to use just punch a hole in the vacuum bag and microwave for about 3 minutes. I have a friend that said he would never eat frozen corn because it is tasteless. We served him some of our corn once when they were out and he wanted to know where I had gotten fresh sweet corn in the middle of winter. I just said the market and let it go. Some people you can't tell them anything so it is best to just let it go. Once all the corn is harvested and the shucks are equally dispersed through the corn growing area if you rototiller the stalks while they are still green they turn under very nicely. Green stalks will break up whereas dried stalks have a tendency to just wind up around your tiller blades. In Oklahoma you can go back and plant green beans where the corn was for a bumper crop of green beans well before the first frost.

ah--that's the beauty of this forum! so much useful info in such a flash--i really appreciate it! ted found our first of the season corn and brought it home last night. since he had 4 ears, we decided to test it shucked and unshucked. and since i rarely do more than heat water or defrost veggies in it, i had no idea what my timing should be. in any case, we stripped the first 2 and cooked for 6 minutes. they were slightly overdone for our taste. we left the other 2 in their husks and cooked them for 4 minutes. i was amazed at how easy it was to clean them and how the steam brightened the husks--quite pretty i thought! but the texture on them also seemed overly done but i was surprised that i honestly didn't taste any difference between the 2 batches. my conclusion at this time is that we didn't have great corn to begin with and i'll look forward to anyother experiment soon! thanx very much for the suggestions--i am very glad to know i don't need to have a pot of water cooking away and that this will work just fine!

I use a trick I learned from Carol (readinglady) here several years back - a very sharp knife and an angel food or bundt cake pan. Stick the end of the ear in the hole in the center and slice down each side. The corn collects in the pan. I have tried various forms of removers over the years and this works the best by far. No cut fingers and the most corn off the cob from the mandoline type strippers. The circular ring cutters didn't fit around half my ears of corn so it quickly got returned. Dave
