School activities that involve group efforts such as Band, Choir, Science Club? Math Club? DECA? (that's the international youth business group), or Girl Scouts?. Babysitting? Helping neighbors on a regular basis with chores? Obviously, her school grades should be given. A short 2-3 sentence blurb about her goals & why she wants a job would be good. I'm trying to think back about with our own 3 kids... Our DS started working at 12 as a model/actor & had an extensive resume by the time he was 17 so nothing there that might help your daughter. Our oldest daughter got her first job as as teen doing photography (she took baby pictures). She put together a portfolio of her work & just started going door-to-door. Our youngest DD, took the easy way out & just flipped her hair & batted her eyelashes until she got a job at the movie theater. rofl I think stressing school activities is the best bet. Oh, if she served as a class officer that would be great. Honor Roll? Something else...has she done any traveling for a school sponsored event? If so, include that. Tell her, "Good Luck!" Hope she finds something fun for the summer. /tricia

Type your resume until you get to the place you want the bullets before you select them. After you are done with the bulleted section, you can highlight those rows and then at the section just above your page, grab the little triangle on the ruler and drag it to where you want the bullets to be (all the way to the left, 1/2 inch to the right, etc.). Just wondering then, would you bother interviewing these people, or just toss aside? The things that get you an interview are not necessarily the things that get you a job. We often interviewed people with unusual experiences but often unusual experiences simply ended up being weird people, sometimes, however, they ended up being real assets that we hired. There are certain experiences, references and resume items that are likely to trigger an interview. This is another reason that you shouldn't assume that employers are impressed with you enough to give you an interview - a better way to think of it is that they are intrigued enough with you to give you an interview. Edit: As an example, I have extensive international experience - I have gotten interviews that I really shouldn't have because of that. I have once or twice had interviews for jobs that I realized during the interview, I was not even remotely qualified for, and the other applicants were far better candidates but my experience was "interesting."

Suzi... interesting about that software tool... it blows. We'd get resumes that had no bearing whatsoever on the job at hand, and miss out on things we'd wanted to get, that we only found out about later because someone knew someone who knew someone.... This brings me to another point. Don't rely on references UNLESS your reference knows, or works for, or directly interacts with the company (or position person) you are applying to. References otherwise will only be checked at the end, maybe. Do include them as it is expected, but... your references in this litigatious society are not going to say anything bad... and companies hiring know this. They'll probably check, but at the end. However, having a reference with their foot already in the door is a positive. (They WILL check to see if your college degree really happened, and that it is not a paper mill, and if you were really employed everywhere you said you were.) But once your resume gets through the software tool or tools (follow any application formats requested), humans will read your resume. They really do want to fill that position! You may even be looking at a small-enough company that they don't spend the wads of moolah on bringing on the software tool that pre-sorts resumes, ineffectively. Some have gotten savvy to the weaknesses inherent in those tools. But be aware that at the very least, many or most of your resumes will be sent electronically, so make sure that it is Word-presentable, too. Most places will require PDFs so that the document is not easily altered.
