Low potassium diet???

I know Bulldinkie and Jannie can help me with this and I sure hope they will. But does anyone else have to watch their potassium intake? Harry's blood test earlier in the month showed levels over the top. Monday's bloodwork had him at the "perfect" level. How do you control your potassium if you have kidney problems?

Harry takes so many meds things get whacky every once in a while. He takes a Lasix and they upped his dosage for a few days. Maybe that's what helped or maybe because we cut out bananas, tomatoes and most potatoes.

Yes we arent allowed stone fruit,peaches,apricots,cherries ,citrus oranges,orange juice,babanas,milk products,sodas coke etc can have clear,rootbeer.tomatoes you can have potatoes but before you mash rinse under water.chochlate,melons.Alot of baked goods cookies,cake etc.I take a pill each meal about the size of a quarter,for phosp & potassium.Its called a binder it takes it out of your food you eat.Thats all I can remember its dialysis nite,not with it.

I had it once due to HBP meds. It was dangerously low - discovered not by my doctor who prescribed the medication but by a different specialist who ran some blood tests. I asked what kind of symptoms would I notice from this? His reply was "Other than being dead"? He wouldn't let me leave the facility until I picked up a prescription for mega-dose potassium supplements. Needless to say I got off that medication pronto as soon as I got back in to the internist. Electrolyte imbalances like seriously low potassium can cause major heart problems.

As of yet I have no signs of bone density loss. I am 60. I have never ever been a milk drinker since I was into my 3rd year. I am a not a great dairy eater except for cheese and cream which I eat in moderation. I do not take any vitamins or supplements. I did take natal and prenatal vitamins as prescribed by my doctor during my childbearing years. I think simple genetics plays a role. I also believe that women who over diet into staying thin can add to the later thinning of their bones. I credit my healthy (thus far) bones to genetics,exercise and a bit of extra padding in my middle years and presently. With all the controversy over supplements and medications I choose to take nothing unless it is something that would actually be life-saving 0r proven to treat a certain condition. I take my thyroid meds religiously for example. if I had high blood pressure I would take my meds for that. High cholesterol? I o would really have to think about it. Too many pros and cons so that would have to be a carefully informed decision. I think we need to concentrate on healthy balanced diets, a weight based on health and not vanity, and exercise and balance throughout out lives. I lost balance due to hearing loss so I concentrate on that area. It's not as good as it was but I must say it is much better than a lot of my younger friends. Except in extreme cases most breaks in elderly are due to falls. Working on balance can prevent those falls or at least lessen the chance of them. I am sure that in some people there is drug therapy to delay the advancement of Osteo. But like Glenda said exercise,weight training etc. play a role too. I believe a greater one. And for every prescribed drug that has controversial side effects or no effects there are so called perfectly "natural" OTC supplements that have the same downsides and can even be more harmful. So if one is taking advice of thier local "nutritionist" at the health food store or Vitamin Store they should do some heavy research on the real science behind these drugs.

I had posted, "I was a certified phlebotomist in a hospital. It doesn't work that way. If 'blood from the blown vein leaked into the second stick area' how would just extra potassium get into the tube of drawn blood? Answer - it wouldn't. Every element would be altered." Then Bookwoman responded with the following from the Mayo Clinic: "Often a report of high blood potassium isn't true hyperkalemia. Instead, it may be caused by the rupture of blood cells in the blood sample during or shortly after the blood draw. The ruptured cells leak their potassium into the sample. This falsely raises the amount of potassium in the blood sample, even though the potassium level in your body is actually normal. When this is suspected, a repeat blood sample is done." There is a HUGE difference between ruptured blood cells which leak their potassium into a blood sample and blood from a blown vein leaking into a second stick area. Are apples and shoes the same thing? No, they're not. Neither are blown veins and ruptured blood cells. A "blown vein" is when the vein is punctured and the blood leaks out into the surrounding area. A "ruptured blood cell" (hemolysis) is a blood cell that ruptures and spills its contents into the surrounding area. When a "vein blows" during a blood draw, the likelihood of the blood cells being ruptured is negligible. Blood cells can, and are, ruptured when a too-small (narrow) needle is being used for the blood draw, or when a syringe is used and then the technician shoots the blood into a tube at too fast a rate, or when the blood tube is shaken too vigorously (it should be gently inverted several times to mix the blood with the anticoagulant).

Super Slimming Porridge: From: Trim Healthy Future cookbook 3 Tbs. flax meal 3 Tbs. Baking Blend (or just coconut flour can work) 1 tsp. Whole Husk Psyllium Flakes 1 tsp. Baobab Boost Powder 1 tsp. chia seeds 1 doonk Pure Stevia Extract Powder 1 Tbs. Gentle Sweet 1 pinch Mineral Salt 3⁄4 cup unsweetened almond milk 1⁄2 cup water Dash each of Maple and Vanilla Natural Burst Extracts 1⁄3 cup frozen wild blueberries Put all ingredients (except blueberries) in a small saucepan set to high heat, whisk well, and bring to a quick boil. Turn heat to low/medium and allow to bubble/simmer for a couple minutes, whisk- ing much of the time. Take off heat. Put blueberries into breakfast bowl and with the help of a spatula, scrape porridge into the bowl and over top of the blueberries. Allow porridge to sit on blueberries for a few minutes. As it sits it will thicken up further and thaw the blueberries. You can eat this as two layers, almost like a cob- bler (as I do) or stir in if preferred. there are 'special ingredients' in this that not everyone is familiar with. i do use these sweeteners, but you can use whatever u use. and u can use the coconut flour. their baking blend is just a combination of common flours etc that add no carbs. Gentle Sweet is a combo of Stevia, Erytthritol and Xylitol. i know not everyone approves of these but i am ok with it. i do add cinnamon to give some flavor. the consistancy is like cream of wheat, but thicker & goopier (sp)... the first time i ate it, i was like 'eh', but i have grown to enjoy it and i do have less aches and stiffness, and its great for weight maintenance overall. lmk if want more info.

My Dh is on Dialysis as well. I am at my wits end trying to get him to eat the right foods. His Phosphous (sp) level was really high last week. When he gets home from dialysis he is so weak. His blood pressure is very low. He sleeps all day. I try like crazy to make the right foods for him. if I tell him he can't have something then he calls me a nag. He eats pickles every time he comes home. also popcorn,watermelon, sandwiches, cherries. Lemonade and all kind of stuff. He does take his binders, but they keep changing it all the time. He was taking those chewable quarter size binders. Said they taste like chalk. Now he back on the liquid.
I bought a couple of cookbooks but he doesn't like anything I cook anymore. I am the point , let him what he wants. Just take your binders. I don't know what else to do.

You can lead a horse to water, but cant make him drink...Is he planning on a transplant?The transplant people checlall that stuff.How well hes listening,did he miss dialysis etc.
I meant no tomatoes now I was told you can eat these things occasionally.Yes sweet chalk...yukIm limited even more since lap band can only eat 2oz at ameal.
Thats like my hubby his bpn is borderline,he wont take his pills.I try to remind if he dont care I dont I have MORE than enoughto worry about.Hes a grown man hes not a child.

not on dialysis, but am on the low p diet, too...mine stemmed for my hyster..got super dehydrated...take 2000 units of vit d (no calcium) and a 'scrip d tab...blood work every 3 months...i cheat on the potatoes...make processed instant...and i do have limited amounts of fruit..stay away from bananas, for sure...

springer who buys the food in the house? i'd just not replace all the baddies or fib and say i will but "forget"...if it's not around, dh will evetually give it up?? i've also cut back on added salt...lemon pepper is my best friend...or measure it out in pinches instead of shaken on...

we always have lots of bottled water in the house...
