Johann Pachelbel's Canon in D-Music that makes my heart turn over

Canon in D is one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. It's funny, I just played a u-tube video to my husband and he doesn't remember hearing it before. I hear it played a number of times every Christmas, in stores, on the radio, and so on. There are many variations of it. It is so lovely, it just makes my heart turn over.

Jodi in CA... I hadn't heard George Winston's piano version so I looked it up. I liked it, but I prefer the more original type symphony versions. I'm not a music expert but I think there are violins, chellos, and so on. Another very interesting version is this one on U-Tube in electric guitar. Not my very favorite but really interesting and amazing that a kid on an electric guitar can do this with a piece of classical music.

Thank you all for the encouraging words!!! I can't wait for the new look that my arbor will give to this area once it is completed and I replace the daylilies that I dug up and Cramoisi forgives me for cutting her branches out of the way. I have mixed feelings about the way a garden continuosly changes...sometimes the changing views evaporate what we so loved to look at. We have a large lot (7/8 acre) so I have divided the garden area into several "garden rooms",using fence sections, trellising,etc. If you are interested, you can view some of my garden photos using the following link. My Mother, My Best Friend, Forever in My heart...

Patricia, My Mother died the same exact way as yours. She had been suffering with a stiff neck for a couple of weeks. On Monday (June 4, 2007) she went to the hospital to get it checked. On Wednesday (6th) we found out she had liver cancer. It had spread to her adrenial glands, lungs and into her neck. On Sunday (10th) she was gone. She too went peacefully in her sleep. I know what you went through, she went really fast. Although this is all still new to me, I too feel your pain. Grieving is not easy for me right now. I smelt saukraut (sp?) the other day and thought it was kind of funny as I was driving down the road. I close my eyes and see her smiling face but yet I can not cry. Her services are this coming week end (17th/18th) and she is being buried on my son's (her grandson's) birthday. He is taking it so hard, but there is nothing I can do. I have talked till I was blue in the face and can not gt my brother to budge. I just hope I have the strength to go through this. With God's help we wil get through this. Over 10 years and I still miss my dad

I have loved reading all the posts and gives me comfort that there are a lot of people who are experiencing the same thing as me. I too miss both my parents, still. My mom died 9 years ago from ovarian cancer and my Dad died 6 years ago after a long battle with renal failure and being on dialysis as a result. I cared for both my parents for years while they were ill. We had always been close and saw each other almost every day of my life. The last few years we all lived together while I was working full time, married and raising two boys. I was so busy with everything that I did not have time to stop and think about what was going to happen when they were gone. I miss them terribly every day and wish I would have just stopped and talked for hours on end to them while they were ill instead of doing the laundry, cleaning the house or grocery shopping or cooking. I am thankful I was able to provide them a safe home to live in and never had to place either one in a nursing home. Both boys are now grown and away from home, my husband works out of town a lot and recently my Uncle (my Mom's brother) has moved in with us after having several mini strokes and can no longer live alone. This has brought back the memories of caring for my Mom and Dad and makes me miss them more and more. I still work full time and this was a huge adjustment as my husband & I were just getting used to being empty nesters and had begun taking trips. We have adjusted accordingly and I am thankful once again that I am able to give my Uncle the care he needs without going to a nursing home. Grief can only be dealt on a day to day basis. Sometimes I can handle it and sometimes I just need a good cry. I think about all the great times we had and that makes me happy, but then the grief creeps back in because I can no longer talk to, smile at, laugh with, cry with or hug my parents ever again. My only comfort is knowing I will see them again one day in Heaven and that is what keeps me going day to day.

What a great topic! There are three songs that always touch my heart: This song by Elton John, written for a long forgotten movie soundtrack before he hit it big, connects me to a colleague who became a dear friend over the 20 years we worked together. We were each other's office husband/wife and he's one of the sweetest, warmest people I've ever known. So many memories and such a great friend. It also reminds me of my kids and how they both have deep lasting friendships with people they've known since childhood. I always think strong bonds of friendship are one of the building blocks of a happy life. This is probably my favorite love song of all time, it speaks to what my husband and I have build over our lives together. Though Carly and James didn't end up forever in love, we've made it 30+ years and I hope our forever stretches for a good long time to come! Last but not least, this one is for my girls, and maybe for myself too LOL. Both my daughter and daughter in law are people I not only love, but admire tremendously for their drive, their determination and their grace in making their dreams come true. Bonus points for anything that brings Emmylou and Mark together to perform-talk about magical musical chemistry.

I'm a wedding planner and I think in all the weddings I've done, this has been played while seating the mothers and then the maids of honor etc. Then, we play Trumpet Voluntary when it's time for the bride to make her entrance....I've heard it over and over and still get goose bumps when it's played....

That piece is a staple in teaching repertaire, so both my children and I
went through plaing it over the years. Evevryones take was different too.
My oldest plays electric guitar, maybe I could talk him into trying it also :o)

One of my favorites! I really liked the George Winston variations, apparently on his December album. I may get that.

Gardenspice, George Winston's December CD is wonderful. I couldn't find mine for about a week so I went out and bought another. Then I found the first one. Now we have it in both cars and on my iTunes at work. I listen to it nearly every day.

I have a whole cd with nothing BUT Pachelbel's Canon on it....it will have the ocean in the background...then it plays again with wind in the background....:0)

Do you like Vivaldi's four seasons?

Nicole, I like Vivaldi's Four Seasons too, though not as much as Canon. I have Four Seasons on CD and have a couple of versions of Canon on CD. One of the Canon versions is light and beautiful while the other is heavy and somewhat dark. Both are beautiful in their own way. I haven't heard the one with the nature sounds in the background but imagine it is very soothing and lovely.

Two of my dd's play the piano and have played P's Canon in D for some years when they get together. When only one is home to play, it makes me miss the other because that is now my association with the song. Sure is beautiful, and I especially enjoy hearing a piano/violin duet.

I totally agree that this is one of the most beautiful and peaceful pieces of music ever written. It's a great antidote to anxiety and stress!

I love the "Sanctus" from Gounod's Mass of St. Cecelia. Certainly not a popular piece, but sung by a good choir it is so beautiful!
