Molly, I don't think you're going to find the mature canes of Reve d'Or are willing to make sharp "S" turns. Maybe very subtle ones, OK?

As for pruning . . .
Is it too big?
Is it growing into a place where you need to walk?
If not, why would you prune it at all?????

Come springtime, cut away anything that is dead.
Otherwise, leave it alone unless, or until it gets in your way.
PRUNING is really not needed for this rose, otherwise -- at least, not until it has a few years of maturity under its belt.
And DON'T think that you need to remove "twiggy" growth. That's also un-needed.

Thanks for the advice, Jeri! I understand that you are saying that pruning this rose to accomodate the arbor is not necessary, unless it is growing where it blocks paths, etc. I do very little pruning of my rose bushes so that works for me! I was, however, thinking of this as a climber, whose blooms are only produced abundantly if the canes are trained horizontally to promote bloom/growth on laterals...that doesn't apply to Rev?

I adore Reve d'Or', and have grown it and seen it blooming in all directions however a cane is placed. Most Tea-Noisette rosebushes do just that.
Unlike climbing Hybrid Teas which must produce its' blooms on longer, thicker canes and have much longer pedicels, and benefit from moving the end tip of the cane below the main part of the cane. A hormone is produced just below the tip of the basal cane, which reduces the bloom production below it.
Tea-Noisettes produce roses in a greater abundance every which way, and all over the bush from near the ground to the top of the plant, with no help from anyone. With so many laterals there is no need to lower the tip of a cane, unless there is an extra-long Autumnal cane, then I might bother lowering its' tip.

Molly, how cool your arbor sounds - and nice and big. If it were me that had this wonderful arbor ready for Rev d'Or to leap upon, I would get a roll of green-coated wire fencing from Lowe's (I think it's about 2" x 2" x 30" or 36") and start it at about 4-ft high and run it up and over the top to about 4-ft down the other side, covering the whole thing and tacking it with u-nails where you can. You might add a couple of 2x4's in between the 2x2's for strength. The wire fencing will give you something to tie to and also keep her on top rather than falling through the slats. It will be almost invisible right away and definitely invisible once she's covering it. The long canes that run across the top will grow laterals, just cut off anything that grows down. It will "pile up on itself" across the top and get pretty thick - minimum 4' to 5' in a few years and then taller, and the front and back of the top will start to weep over the edge which will be fine. Just keep it trimmed for headroom. She doesn't mind a bit. I would think it will have no problem pouring over and down the other side with her lateral growth. You might plant a bush rose on the other side (not too close since RdO makes shade), but I don't think RdO will be wanting to share that lovely arbor. And there won't be much need to prune except for the dead stuff and the occasional "haircut". You won't be able to reach the top. I hope your arbor is anchored good and strong. She's going to make a heck of a windbreak. Do be taking photos, OK? In fact, I'd love to see the arbor now. It won't be visible before too long.

I knew I would get great information from this forum! Here is a photo of the "almost finished" arbor. My husband will trim the long gable boards tomorrow and add some horizontal support. In the second photo, (taken before the arbor was built) you will see the back end of the arbor. In this photo, the Cornelia rose blocks the view of the young Rev d'Or that is planted next to it. Also, the privet in the back of the photo appears closer to Cramoisi than it actually is.

Sherry, that's a great idea on the green fencing...I'm sure DH will be happy to add that. He is also going to add more horizontal supports.

Thank you all for the encouraging words!!! I can't wait for the new look that my arbor will give to this area once it is completed and I replace the daylilies that I dug up and Cramoisi forgives me for cutting her branches out of the way. I have mixed feelings about the way a garden continuosly changes...sometimes the changing views evaporate what we so loved to look at.
We have a large lot (7/8 acre) so I have divided the garden area into several "garden rooms",using fence sections, trellising,etc. If you are interested, you can view some of my garden photos using the following link. Unfortunately my Canon point and shoot doesn't do justice to the beauty of roses.

Mine went on a big growth spurt after we finally got some rain in September. I had to cut off many long secondary canes because they were blowing around and setting off the security lights, LOL.

Oh, my goodness, what a beautiful sight! Is that ONE Rev d'Or, Buford? Jeri's photo as well as this one has me grinning ear-to-ear.

Most of that picture is one Reve d'Or. On the right of it is Veilchenbleu, but it wasn't blooming yet. On the other side is Sombrieul, but it was small then.

Unfortunately after this picture a huge storm knocked the whole arbor over. I had to cut back the roses a lot, but RdO is almost back to full growth now. It's a great plant.

Yeah, we've had an arbor go down with a mature plant on it. Notta Lotta Fun.
