I love Reve d'Or on my arbor. It's virtually disease free and alway seems to be in bloom. It's a light coral color. No fragrance that I can detect.

Lamarque (white, fragrant, vigorous, continuous bloom): Secret Garden Musk Climber (single, white, fragrant, vigorous, continuous bloom); most other Noisettes for the same reasons; Grandmother's Hat (pink, fragrant, vigorous but not as much so as the previous two so it won't overpower the arbor, continuous bloom); Buff Beauty (pale yellow, fragrant, vigorous, continuous bloom); most of the other Hybrid Musks for the same reasons; Annie Laurie McDowell, not an "antique", but has the look of one. Very fragrant, perpetual bloom in these parts, vigorous, very healthy, completely THORNLESS so working with her won't cause injury or damage. Kim

"Natchitoches Noisette" or Renae are my suggestions for you. Renae is completely thornless, but NN probably blooms more here, because she blooms all the danged time :D

Cool Roses which is South Florida, Rose Petals in Newberry which is near Gainesville, Angel Gardens, which is also north Florida. I love Rose Petals personally, although someone on here got some really small plants from them recently. The ones I have always gotten have been lovely large plants.

I just ordered one CL Maman Cochet (Pink), two Reve d Or, and one CL White Maman Cochet from Rose Petals. The pickings were slim, but really looking forward to getting them. How long do you think it will take them to grow 6-8 feet?

Ooooh, I have Cl Maman. She's so pretty! It shouldn't take long at all in your zone, I wouldn't think. She took a few years here, but the winters make her harder to establish, of course :) When she takes off, she really takes off!

The only one I have is Reve d'Or, which has been in the ground about a year and is about 4 feet tall. Blooms a lot for me. It's in full all-day sun but seems to be doing all right. I had Secret Garden Musk climber there before, and it couldn't handle that much sun. Just kept getting rattier and rattier.

Wow, that's awesome. Love your blog too sherriocala. I am posting a pic of my arbor. I was thinking one rose on each side of the gate, but after seeing your pics maybe I plant just one?? Any suggestions on training up the fence?

I love the cottage garden look. I have 12 double pink knockouts just planted last fall. I am hooked!

Your arch/gate will be pretty with a rose on it. I think you're right you only need one. I'd plant it on the outside, meaning the opposite side from the house, for two reasons. There doesn't appear to be enough room between the house and the arch for a rose to have sufficient air circulation and for the type of growth it's likely to generate. Second, the sun appears to mainly come from over the house to this area. Planting one rose on the fence side of the gate will encourage it to grow toward the sun, toward the house, covering the top of your arch. Planting between the arch and house, the rose is going to try to grow more up and toward the sun, resulting in more of a battle getting it to contain itself to the top of the arch.

Also, from this photo, I would suggest Renae because of how limber she is; how heavily flowering and fragrant she is; her tendency to flower on downward hanging wood so the blooms are often "in your face", and her complete lack of prickles. Kim

Chellamural, may I make a suggestion? Plant Reve d'Or by the gate because she is very flexible and her canes can be put where YOU want them rather than where they want to go. The Cochets are very stiff-caned and mine did not appreciate being forced in different directions. Canes that I tied back invariably died, and I now just remove wayward young canes. Both roses are well armed but MC & WMC are almost lethal and putting them by that gate would probably not be a good idea. Take that from experience.

I suggest not planting any of these next to the gate on the outside of the fence. They will become a monster with no room to go anywhere. I would plant Reve d'Or inside the fence on the side fence, maybe 6' down from the corner, and train it in both directions (similar to my photo above). Train it toward the corner and around and over the gate. That will leave less rose (but still a lot) to interfere with the gate. You and your DH will probably devise a better system, but I stuck 10' lengths (2' in the ground, 8' out of the ground) of rebar along the fence 8' apart, anchored them to the fence (they're floppy with weight on them), and ran rows of coated clothes-line wire between the rebar "posts" that the rose could be tied to. In hindsight I don't like the system, but I didn't have the ability to build anything better/stronger/higher. It works though. and after a few years the rose is semi-self-supporting courtesy of the wires and prickles.

I assume that's a 6' fence. Due to the bulkiness of the rose, you'll need to give it support that's at least 8' high - 10' would be better - to get it up so you can walk under the bulk instead of around it. Sometimes it's impossible to get AROUND wayward prickly canes. They all naturally throw LONG canes - 8, 10, 12' long. Then those canes throw long canes, and on and on. So the growth tends to pile up on top where I let it be. Canes that grow toward my house are either thrown back on top (by me) or shortened to allow passage. If a "running" arbor of that height (8-10') could be built along the length of your fence (20' per rose), it would be great. Jerry-rigging these roses is not the best idea, since the re-do can be painful and bloody.

I hope this helps. In south Florida you have the perfect conditions for these roses to become as big as they can be, i.e., humongous. You won't have the slowdown in winter that I have. If supported properly, your roses will be gorgeous. BTW, if you had a chainlink or rail fence, running them along that fence would be simple, but you have a stockade fence like I do, and all the growth must find its place on one side rather than straddling the fence unless you get it up high. Howdy, neighbor, do you like thorny roses? Some don't, like mine. If you don't get their support right, you will hate these roses because they will overwhelm and terrify you. Take charge, do it right, and get ready for unbelievable beauty.

Oh no, I think I made a mistake ordering these roses. The fence is 6 ft and right on the property line. I am sure my neighbor won't mind it going over the top of the fence because they don't use that part of the lawn and could use some interest. Maybe I can add some steel or some type of lattice/woodto the fence posts. My DH probably won't go along with that. What if I can keep it trimmed back? Maybe I shouldn't plant these at all? I will take more pics and post them later today.

Lowe's has metal fence posts in difference lengths and they work great to make an arbor...., I put several 10' lengths in a row upright, 2' in the ground, and then suspended 6' ones between the uprights horizontally, to tie the canes onto... these fence posts have holes along them so you can run wire thru' them to tie together.... I like re-bar also but find these posts handier, they work better and don't cost much more, and can be configured so many different ways... being fence posts they have that flange toward the bottom that when driven into the ground holds the thing tight and steady, not like rebar that needs something to hold it tight in the ground .....sally

I think I will plant how sherryocala says, on the inside. I will probably add steel risers to each fence post and then attach a cross bar at 8 feet!

No, Chellamaral, I don't have any pics, and I don't know if Lowe's has a link for them, I went to HD looking for something really tall and wound up at Lowe's, here in St Pete, and when I saw these posts I grabbed what they had, and plan on going back for more.. they also had some 6' and some 5' and I got a few of each, and have used them all, very handy for medium-tall roses that need a place to tie them...I'm guessing that more places carry them, maybe fence people or even lumber-yards, they are so handy..good luck, sally

I found what I think Sally is referring to. Disregard the S.C. vendor in this link. I was just trying to find a picture and description. They're made for wire fencing. I've bought them at Lowe's.
