Rose suggestions for this Gate Arbor

Hi, Hubby has finally finished enclosure for rose garden with two gate arbors (pictured below). The gates are about 44 inches wide. I am currently thinking Zehpirine Drouhin for one. I have Dortmund, Jeanne LaJoie, Cl. Pinkie but would consider any others you may think would be good for this project. Thanks for any input...

around here, climbing pinkie outgrew her arbor and finally destroyed it. You ewill have to keep her in bounds if she is planted there. Zeffy isn't the best rebloomer for me... go with whatever makes you happiest!

Viking queen and Compassion have been blooming most of the summer here----I chopped Compassion way back and it bounced back and now has more blooms.

Planning a arbor swing and need suggestions

May I make a suggestion? Notice in the photo of the arbor swing how the backdrop is tall shrubs? Now imagine a fence behind it. To me, it loses some charm that way. My suggestion is actually prompted in part by the angle of your photo. Also I recall you were looking for ways to increase privacy between you and your neighbor where the fence changes to split rail. Why not position the arbor swing at an angle in front of your magnolia bush? So in your first photo, the swing would be facing the photographer straight on, place at about a 120-dgree angle out from the fence. Then contine your roses, etc. along the fence if there is room. Be sure to allow enough room behind the swing for the magnolia bush -- I confess I have no idea of its mature size, so maybe this is not a good placement, but I thought it would relate to the patio, fence, and lawn tree better than squishing it up against the fence. DO consider either relocating or "dressing" your fountain up with more plants. It looks a bit naked and utilitarian showing so starkly against the fence. (Maybe things just haven't grown to fill in yet?) Just as with furnishing a room, there is a tendency among gardeners to put everything around the edges or floating in the middle of an empty space. Look at home decorating magazines where you'll see beds coming into the room at an angle and sofas arranged in small conversation areas -away from the walls- to break up a big room. That's kind of the idea here. I'm ignoring the trampoline because it won't be there forever. Right? Wrong? So that's my bright idea for the day. In any case, please show us a photo once it's installed. How nice of your father to build the swing for you! Hope he has fun with the project.

I was looking at black iron arbors as we will be replacing the wooden fence soon in a year or two with the new vynal white post and rail. We have a dog so we were looking at picket and post and rail with the green wire. The wooden fence is old and falling apart and even though I like the wood look as it is more natural I feel we have white vynal in the front of the house so trying to keep everything even as far as fence color goes. I won't be replacing the fence for another year or two so I feel the black arbor will go with the old and new fence plus match in with the white and black shed. White sounds interesting with the clematis but if we switch to a white post and rail fence then maybe pink is the better option. I was looking at golden showers as a climber but that is yellow so I will have to take a look at some of the pink one's mentioned above.. Thanks for the input!! The shed is my husband's gift and he told me to have fun decorating around it so I am!!!!

Looks like one of the 'Grootendoorst' series of Rugosa Hybrid roses. There are several with 'Grootendoorst' as part of the cultivar name. If it is one of these it will have fringed petals, like a carnation. Here is a link that might be useful: Google Image Search Results

Marechal Niel is so,so lovely, but then again I love all those climbing noisettes. Lots of whites and yellows in various gradings to choose from. In my experience, some are thorny (Marechal Niel and Buff Beauty), others less so(Lamarque and Mme Alfred Carriere), some barely have milk teeth (Crepuscule, but it's more apricot-ish). Easy to grow in a warm climate, fragrant, and most will flower regularly between big seasonal flushes. Mine treat any teensy bit of blackspot like the minor inconvenience of a broken fingernail. First rose I ever planted was a Mme Al. When she climbed halfway up her arbor in the first year, I thought, boy, nuthin' to this rose growing business. Then I bought some hybrid teas, and learned otherwise...

Thanks so much for your ideas. Pagan, I really appreciate knowing that cl. Pinkie is known for overgrowing her limits...that is exactly what I fear from a lot of the climbers and have little experience to draw from regarding ultimate size and weight. Florence, I loved the pictures of Viking Queen at helpmefind. I always love seeing your posts and pictures of your garden. Autumn Showers, I hadn't really thought of those roses--thanks, for encouraging me to take a look at them. There is such a treasure of knowledge among the Gardenwebbers and I certainly appreciate this forumn...Thanks all, Faye

Your Hubby is 1 great guy, that is a wonderful arbor. He did a beautiful job on that.

Perhaps 'Alister Stella Grey'? Fragrant, good repeat...

Thanks, hoovb, I think I will keep him! And thanks for the suggestion. I had ASG at my previous home but it was more bush-like, though I have heard there are two versions--one of which throws off long canes. It definitely is a rose to have here. It was hardly ever without blooms. Unfortunately, I failed to root a cutting before moving though I got copies of most everything else. May see one at the Texas Rose Rustlers' fall cutting exchange. Below shows the panels that match the gates.

The first day we built it, a little bird checked out each little house in hopes of a new home. Poor little girl!

Are those bird houses or just holes drilled into the posts? If you have birds looking for houses, why not put some up? A good source for free bird houses might be your local high school. Our shop students make them every year, and there are always a dozen or so that the students don't want to take home...just a thought

You are correct, rjlinva, they are just made to look like birdhouses. I would have felt bad if she had been able to build as she would have been at risk that low to the ground (neighbor cats). But, there are large areas of trees behind the garden and throughout our development that support the many birds we do have. As a matter of fact, many owners actually left the native yaupon in their yards and sculpt into rounded mounds, quite interesting since most rural Texans struggle to clear expanses of yaupon.
