I love the Canon products and especially their cameras. I am now ready to buy a new camera and want to know which

Canon do you like the best. I want a point and shoot that takes clear, crisp photos that are great for printouts.

Today only...the Canon Powershot SD100 IS (image stabilized) is on sale at Newegg.com, $199.00, includes an 8 gb SD card.
It has face detection and the new digic III in it.
Got great reviews at stevesdigicams.com and dpreview.com

MaryAnn.....I have an old Canon S2IS thats been really good for what I need it to do (and Lord knows I'm no photographer...LOL). The old S2 is available some places but has been replaced by the Canon S5 (there is also an S3 model) both are very good cameras. They are all pretty good little point and shoots. (Mine has lots of extra features too that I have never mastered...LOL).

I always suggest not using any of the extra software that comes with cameras it is rarely needed and just adds more clutter and takes up space on the hard drive. It is so easy to just use the memory card and the memory card slot on the pc or if it does not have a memeory card slot pick up a usb memory card reader they are very cheap. Then just move the pics from the card right to the folder of your choice on the pc. My guess is that the software is not compatible with windows 7 64 bit if that is what the new pc is.

There are several good telephoto lenses (the kind you want to buy) available for your cameras. Since your current lens can cover distances to 80mm, you should look for one with a focal length of at least that. Bigger numbers indicate the ability to handle longer distances. A 160mm lens will focus to twice the distance your current lens will. A 240mm lens will focus to three times the distance. However, as this focal length increases, three things will happen to the lens: it will get more expensive; generally larger and heavier; and less able to handle lower levels of light. Expensive is expensive; there is not much you can do with that besides buy a used lens or a third-party lens (in your case, a lens by anyone other than Canon). The inability to handle lower levels of light can be compensated for several ways. You could keep the camera lens open longer to admit more light -- but that can cause blurring if you're shooting a moving subject or holding the camera without a tripod. You could use flash, though the flash that comes on the camera likely won't have enough power to light something far away, so you might have to buy a flash unit. You could spend more money :-) and get a telephoto lens that has a wider maximum aperture. These are sometimes dramatically bigger and heavier than less-capable lenses. Or you could buy an "IS" (Image Stabilization) lens; the lens largely eliminating blur caused by handholding. Neat feature; not cheap. If you choose to buy a used lens, it's best to buy one in person at a place that sells used photographic equipment and will give you at least a little warranty. Bring your digital so you can see some results right away. Since Canon is a popular brand, if you live near an urban area you shouldn't have trouble finding a good lens. If you buy a third-party lens, stick with better-known brands (Tamron and Tokina come to mind, but try to avoid their very cheapest lenses). A good third-party lens will have a metal lens mount and operate smoothly and quietly. You also will have to make sure it works with your particular Canon camera model. Sometimes third-party lenses don't work well with a given manufacturer's camera, so you may lose some automatic features or exposure information. That's a lot to digest at once, I'm sure. There also are several Web sites which discuss lenses for Canons -- but be warned that there is just a firehose of information out there because Canon is such a popular brand.

Steph the higher the ISO the grainier the photos will look as that's adjusting the sensitivity to light of the camera's sensor, similar to using a higher speed film in a film camera. However it shouldn't be so noticeable at ISO 200. More normal would be some graininess at ISO 400 and over so perhaps your interior daylight isn't sufficiently bright. The yellow cast could be be from your white balance setting. Try changing that and experiment with different options. Try the tungsten setting, which you'd normally use for an indoor photo illuminated by incandescent lightbulbs. The camera will then reduce the yellow cast in your photo. Otherwise to get the correct natural colour try the custom white balance using white paper that I mentioned. Sharon

Search in the Photography forum and you'll get plenty of answers. In the mean time, I'll try to give you my 2 cents worth. Cameras are like cars. There's a maker for each person's individuality. 1st, You'd need to determine what is his level of photography knowledge? In any brand, there's intermediate, medium and professional level cameras. If he's a pro, you may just want to ask him what he'd like. A pro knows what he wants and mostly will not settle with just anything. If he's not, most intermediate and medium level cameras has both features: auto focus and manual focus. They're made for those that want to grow and learn about photography beyond autofocus features. 2nd, Does he owns any previous 35mm camera lens? Would these lens capable to be mounted on the new DSLR body? Such brand as Canon has been a favorite for many because of its interchangeable lens. Meaning, we can invest into the more expensive lens knowing that if we ever upgrade the camera, the old lens would still work with the new camera body as well. I have a few that I owned from the mid 80's and still work very well with the new DSLR. 3rd, The camera body and weight must feel comfortable in one's hand. It makes a different with the result of a photo. If all possible, take him to a camera store and let him play around, ask questions and make a choice of the Digital SLR (DSLR). Then, go online and purchase from one of the reputable online store. Normally, their prices are less expensive. Watch out for import (gray market) vs. US warranty cameras (price varies). Personally, I've always owned Canon. I had several Canon 35mm cameras and had since upgraded to digital: from the Canon Rebel XT to currently the Canon 40D (had it for a little over a month). As mentioned, I have a few lens from the 35mm cameras that works well with both DSLRs. I've upgraded to the Canon 40D because it has some image stabilizer built into the camera. Although, Canon also makes some lens with Image Stabilizer (IS). The lens kit of the Canon 40D camera comes with a 28-135mm lens that has the IS feature (mainly in the US). I don't plan to upgrade the camera body for a long while. I'm quite satisfied with the Canon 40D. Instead, I'm investing on better lens. And, that's what I'd recommend for you to do. If money is not an object, buy a medium price range camera but invest the rest on a good lens with low aperture capability such as f/2.8 or less. Good lens give the flexibility to take crispy clear photos in low light situation. I strongly recommend to read reviews from the 2 websites that Susan posted above. They also has forums in categories of camera brands. You may find some useful information from the users. Good Luck! Natalie

Dang, that's a great deal, Jaon!

MaryAnn, I have a Canon PowerShot SD 750 and I just love it. It takes wonderful pictures, is small and handy and fits in my bag easily.

Let me know if you get a little Canon and I'll send you case for it, I am in the process of making some more right now.

I'm loving my new Canon...digital Rebel XT..but it's not a throw in your purse camera. I kind of miss that.

I take it with me anyway...

I have a Canon Power Shot A620 and it's a great point and shoot camera. I can autofocus or manually focus plus a host of other features. 7.1 mega pixels.

Love it and easy to use.

I'm looking at the Canon S3, with its greater optical zoom, or perhaps the S5.

The S3's are getting harder to find - but I love mine! S5 is the current model in that group. Basically the exact same camera. S5 has a little larger view screen.

Great super zoom and image stabilazation. Takes quick pictures and even faster on sports mode.

After reading reviews, etc, I am leaning towards the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS. Does anyone here have that model?

mrsmarv, the camera I'm replacing is a S30. I liked it okay, but think the photos could have been sharper for printouts. It just suddenly quit. It won't even turn on. I have been a little rough with it and it's been dropped a few times. I think I bought it when Dusty was a Senior in HS and he's 24 now. So I guess it lasted long enough!

I have one of the IS (3?) cameras and also an older digital elph. I really like them both. Elph's are so pocket friendly they are easy to carry. I would go to a store and actually handle the camera and make sure it is what you expect. There is no subsitute for the real thing. Steve's digicams is also good for camera reviews.
Isn't it funny that every one assumed that the OP wanted a digital camera?

Some important things to consider when buying a point and shoot digital camera:
1) Get one with an IS if possible,
2) With a viewfinder. Many recent models took out the viewfinder to make place for a larger LCD display. The LCD display is not a big help to view when you're outdoor in bright light condition.

3) One that uses AA or AAA batteries. Rechargeable batteries of this type are easier to find but recharging can be a bothersome when you travel outside the US. However, AA and AAA are sold just about anywhere in the world, a great convenience.

Which means... any of the Canon Powershot from model A590 IS and up are good buys.

I just recommended to my boss the Powershot A590 IS. He wants to spend around $150 and at BuyDig.com, the price is around $145, no shipping, no tax and with US warranty. Watch out for gray market price = import and did not meet US standard; thus, have no US warranty.

Image stabilization. It's a great (and to me, critical) feature and I'm surprised all camera makers don't have them as a standard feature.

Maryanne, although you are getting a new camera for better photos, you still might be able to get your old camera fixed. When my camera stopped, at Disney world of all places, I was stumped. Nothing I did would make it work. After calling the company, they agreed to repair it for free and I still have my cannon elph for traveling light.
Might be worth a try, then your grandkids can use your old camera!

Thanks everyone. I thnk I've decided to buy the Canon PowerShot G9 12.1MP. It's much more expensive than the other one I chose, but it's not like I buy one every year. I've had my other one for at least 6 years.

Toni, I was wondering what to do with my old one. It worked one day and the next it wouldn't turn on. I don't think there is too much wrong with it, but I don't want to pay to get it repaired. LOL
