Canon PowerShot A570 IS Digital Camera...????

The other day someone posted about a refurbished Canon

Is this about the same as that one...or do any of you have one just like this one?

This one is for sale on Craigs list for $70 or best offer.

I wondered if I should go for it...

What should I check for (as in to make sure it is okay)

it comes with two memory cards.

Hi Patti - I posted about the Canon S3 - it is $199. They are completely differnt cameras.

The A570 is a smaller camera. It has a 4x zoom. The S3 has a 12x zoom.

I looked on Amazon - and a new one is going for $150. I am sure you can find it cheaper than that, but $70 is good if the camera has not been used much.

Take some batteries with you (it takes AA) and power up the camera several times in quick sucession to see if it comes up fast. It should power up very fast.

I don't know if you can check to see the images on a computer - that would be good.

I am pretty sure this camera has the same chip as my S3. It is fast and it takes some great video. The video is awesome - so nice to be able to take the small camera instead of a huge one.

I have a A550 - pretty much the same camera. It is a great smaller camera.

What size are the SD cards? You can buy 1GB for less than $10. You don't want anything smaller than a 1GB.

The camera itself comes with a 16MB - that will only hold 2 or 3 pictures...so watch the size of the card - you want that number to have a GB not a MB behind it :)

My kids bought me a digital camera a few years ago for my birthday. I have loved having it. I just bought another one. It is a small Canon Power Shot SD1000. If it is at all possible for you I would buy a new one. They have some really good deals out now. I gave $179.00 for my new one plus got a Canon Pixma iP1800 printer free. However you get the camera, enjoy it. It is so much fun taking and viewing them right away..

I think I finally found a winner. I am going to be posting shots from the other cameras too. The Nikon coolpix S8200 does great zoom shots and can get good closeups of flowers and that wasn't even on the macro setting. I posted some pictures here. Great detail on the sweet alyssum and that was a zoom taken from a standing position. The gazebo close up one was taken from the deck at the top of the property. The gazebo is almost at the bottom. You can see the difference between using the zoom and taking it wide open. Also see the property denuded of trees. DH has been cutting down all the Monterey Cypress but that is another story. I have owned three Canon digital cameras in the past 10 years and have always enjoyed trouble-free photography. Nowadays, it comes down to getting the feature set that is right for you. All the major manufacturers make great gear, it's just a matter of finding which one matches your needs in the price range you have in mind. I agree that reviews are good, but it's just one persons opinion. However, if 19 out of 20 people have a common complaint, then that's something to consider. Regarding battery life, there are a few things you can do to extend the life. In most cases, common sense applies. If you use the flash a lot or leave the LCD viewer on much of the time, your batteries take a hit. A USB connection between your computer and camera may also draw energy from your battery, so consider getting a card reader. If you get a backup battery, spend a little more and get the factory version instead of a cheaper, third-party choice. I tried that a few years ago and spent $20 to get one that was DOA. The seller also refused to refund my money. From then on, I always bought the same battery that Canon sold with the camera. Good luck with your new camera!

I was reading that this is a common problem with this camera but have yet to find a solution. How many shots can you make with a re-charge? How many more shots with the low battery indicator on? It seems this camera will drain batteries when left in camera for only a couple of days. You could have bad battery contact terminals, sometime by just cleaning them will help. Some have bent out the contacts with a small screwdriver and this also helped. I was reading something about re-setting your camera with new batteries, think it was like this...take batteries out and push power button for at about 30 seconds. I would try this first. Konrad

Search in the Photography forum and you'll get plenty of answers. In the mean time, I'll try to give you my 2 cents worth. Cameras are like cars. There's a maker for each person's individuality. 1st, You'd need to determine what is his level of photography knowledge? In any brand, there's intermediate, medium and professional level cameras. If he's a pro, you may just want to ask him what he'd like. A pro knows what he wants and mostly will not settle with just anything. If he's not, most intermediate and medium level cameras has both features: auto focus and manual focus. They're made for those that want to grow and learn about photography beyond autofocus features. 2nd, Does he owns any previous 35mm camera lens? Would these lens capable to be mounted on the new DSLR body? Such brand as Canon has been a favorite for many because of its interchangeable lens. Meaning, we can invest into the more expensive lens knowing that if we ever upgrade the camera, the old lens would still work with the new camera body as well. I have a few that I owned from the mid 80's and still work very well with the new DSLR. 3rd, The camera body and weight must feel comfortable in one's hand. It makes a different with the result of a photo. If all possible, take him to a camera store and let him play around, ask questions and make a choice of the Digital SLR (DSLR). Then, go online and purchase from one of the reputable online store. Normally, their prices are less expensive. Watch out for import (gray market) vs. US warranty cameras (price varies). Personally, I've always owned Canon. I had several Canon 35mm cameras and had since upgraded to digital: from the Canon Rebel XT to currently the Canon 40D (had it for a little over a month). As mentioned, I have a few lens from the 35mm cameras that works well with both DSLRs. I've upgraded to the Canon 40D because it has some image stabilizer built into the camera. Although, Canon also makes some lens with Image Stabilizer (IS). The lens kit of the Canon 40D camera comes with a 28-135mm lens that has the IS feature (mainly in the US). I don't plan to upgrade the camera body for a long while. I'm quite satisfied with the Canon 40D. Instead, I'm investing on better lens. And, that's what I'd recommend for you to do. If money is not an object, buy a medium price range camera but invest the rest on a good lens with low aperture capability such as f/2.8 or less. Good lens give the flexibility to take crispy clear photos in low light situation. I strongly recommend to read reviews from the 2 websites that Susan posted above. They also has forums in categories of camera brands. You may find some useful information from the users. Good Luck! Natalie

Patti, it's got the face-detection and the image stabilization. Sounds like a good deal, if it is in good shape (my opinion).

Make sure you get the cords with it.

I don't use my cords - but you might want them. I take the SD card out to upload the pictures to my camera - but most people like to hook it up via the cord. You should also get some AV cords that allow you to hook it up to your TV to watch the pictures/video right on your TV. This is nice at Christmas or KT Get Togethers, LOL!!!!

The 16 MB card that originally came with the camera is worth nothing. If they have 1GB or larger that is good.

If you get it you will want to invest in rechargeable batteries and a charger - you can get a package of 4 AA batteries and a charger for under $20. You will love them! I use Energizer 2500 NiMH - Canon recommends NiMH only. Mine last a long time, and I use them in other things like flashlights and my portable storm radio. I always keep a set charged for my camera too.

This camera is a 7 megapixel - but anything over 4 is sufficient. It has a good sensor and good optics. It has the Canon quality.

No...I didn't...we had a bad afternoon...and I didn't want to mess with it then...So later Denny said I should go email that guy...His post is gone and the email kept coming back...so I assume he sold it.

There will be another one.
