Canon PowerShot A570 IS Digital Camera...????

The other day someone posted about a refurbished Canon

Is this about the same as that one...or do any of you have one just like this one?

This one is for sale on Craigs list for $70 or best offer.

I wondered if I should go for it...

What should I check for (as in to make sure it is okay)

it comes with two memory cards.

Hi Patti - I posted about the Canon S3 - it is $199. They are completely differnt cameras.

The A570 is a smaller camera. It has a 4x zoom. The S3 has a 12x zoom.

I looked on Amazon - and a new one is going for $150. I am sure you can find it cheaper than that, but $70 is good if the camera has not been used much.

Take some batteries with you (it takes AA) and power up the camera several times in quick sucession to see if it comes up fast. It should power up very fast.

I don't know if you can check to see the images on a computer - that would be good.

I am pretty sure this camera has the same chip as my S3. It is fast and it takes some great video. The video is awesome - so nice to be able to take the small camera instead of a huge one.

I have a A550 - pretty much the same camera. It is a great smaller camera.

What size are the SD cards? You can buy 1GB for less than $10. You don't want anything smaller than a 1GB.

The camera itself comes with a 16MB - that will only hold 2 or 3 pictures...so watch the size of the card - you want that number to have a GB not a MB behind it :)

My kids bought me a digital camera a few years ago for my birthday. I have loved having it. I just bought another one. It is a small Canon Power Shot SD1000. If it is at all possible for you I would buy a new one. They have some really good deals out now. I gave $179.00 for my new one plus got a Canon Pixma iP1800 printer free. However you get the camera, enjoy it. It is so much fun taking and viewing them right away..

I think I finally found a winner. I am going to be posting shots from the other cameras too. The Nikon coolpix S8200 does great zoom shots and can get good closeups of flowers and that wasn't even on the macro setting. I posted some pictures here. Great detail on the sweet alyssum and that was a zoom taken from a standing position. The gazebo close up one was taken from the deck at the top of the property. The gazebo is almost at the bottom. You can see the difference between using the zoom and taking it wide open. Also see the property denuded of trees. DH has been cutting down all the Monterey Cypress but that is another story. I was Searching for info on the same problem. My little Nikon digital won't open the lens COVER all the way. So it shuts down in a few seconds. Did not drop it, but the one year warranty expired almost a year ago. Had a similar problem with a older Nikon I did drop a few feet (not on the lens) and the lens cover did not always open up, but this newer Nikon (6100?) displays lens error 100% of the time. I tried charging the battery all the way, spraying compressed air gently into the area, and using a vacuum for suction. Nothing improved it. My opinion of extended warranties is that they are a money maker for the vendor, and often not a good buy. But in small cameras with a longer lens (7x digital on up, maybe) they might be worth the money. Not sure that sending it off for repair would be worth the money. Camera was only $170 back then, maybe $100 today with the same features. Open to suggestions

We have a Nikon D40X, which has been discontinued in favor of the D60. You know you can't beat a DSLR. Not only is the picture quality amazing at the fastest iso settings, there is absolutely no delay when you take a picture. As a matter of fact, if sports are important to you, 3 frames a second in continuous mode is what you'll want. It delivers. It's also nice to be able to change lenses. I look at it as upgradeable. There is a drawback, size. Because of the size and weight of the camera we actually just bought a compact to supplement. We use the compact for everyday type events and the Nikon for the bigger ones (as long as I'm the one carrying it around). Okay, why'd I tell you all that when your looking for a compact? Because our compact is an Olympus Stylus 1010 and the picture quality rivals the Nikon. Both are 10 megapixel cameras (actually the Olympus is 10.1). Of course we can do much more with the Nikon but the Olympus is much more convenient when traveling or just taking everyday shots. The Olympus cost us $400 with extended warranty, 2x 2gig xD memory chips, and bag. You can get a Nikon D60 for about $650 is you look hard enough. And D40X for a little less than that. Canon still has a very good product. I would recommend the Canon S3 IS based on what I have read. You can find excellent reviews at Steve's Digicam website.

Patti, it's got the face-detection and the image stabilization. Sounds like a good deal, if it is in good shape (my opinion).

Make sure you get the cords with it.

I don't use my cords - but you might want them. I take the SD card out to upload the pictures to my camera - but most people like to hook it up via the cord. You should also get some AV cords that allow you to hook it up to your TV to watch the pictures/video right on your TV. This is nice at Christmas or KT Get Togethers, LOL!!!!

The 16 MB card that originally came with the camera is worth nothing. If they have 1GB or larger that is good.

If you get it you will want to invest in rechargeable batteries and a charger - you can get a package of 4 AA batteries and a charger for under $20. You will love them! I use Energizer 2500 NiMH - Canon recommends NiMH only. Mine last a long time, and I use them in other things like flashlights and my portable storm radio. I always keep a set charged for my camera too.

This camera is a 7 megapixel - but anything over 4 is sufficient. It has a good sensor and good optics. It has the Canon quality.

No...I didn't...we had a bad afternoon...and I didn't want to mess with it then...So later Denny said I should go email that guy...His post is gone and the email kept coming back...so I assume he sold it.

There will be another one.
