Any one have a Canon - PowerShot S100?

The Canon PowerShot S100 has caught my eye. I am thinking of getting that as my new digital camera. I like the fact that it has a CMOS sensor for better low light and sharper photos. I am fine with 12MP because unless you are making poster size prints every time, you don't need much more. On the fence about the rechargeable lithium-ion NB-5L battery. I had that on my last camera and it would run out of charge at the most inconvenient times, so I always carried a backup. But I hear most current cameras go through AA's like crazy.

My last camera was a Nikon Coolpix 8800 that I bought in Dec. 2004. It was one of the highest mega pixels (8) at the time. I could really blow up photos with great detail and no noise. That came in handy for macro shots of flowers. And it was one of the first to have Image Stabilization.

It cost $1000 back then and don't really want to spend that much this time around. I finally realized that digital cameras, unlike 35mm or medium format, are not meant to last. They are disposal. It is almost impossible to find the lithium-ion battery for my old camera now and they are expensive. I have film cameras from the 1940's that are easier to buy film for than to get memory cards for my digital camera that is only 8 years old.

So what do you like and dislike about the Canon? I have read a ton of reviews till my head is spinning. I realize most of those are just people's opinions. But want to know, does it really produce great pictures? That is the reason I buy a camera.

I have owned three Canon digital cameras in the past 10 years and have always enjoyed trouble-free photography. Nowadays, it comes down to getting the feature set that is right for you. All the major manufacturers make great gear, it's just a matter of finding which one matches your needs in the price range you have in mind. I agree that reviews are good, but it's just one persons opinion. However, if 19 out of 20 people have a common complaint, then that's something to consider.

Regarding battery life, there are a few things you can do to extend the life. In most cases, common sense applies. If you use the flash a lot or leave the LCD viewer on much of the time, your batteries take a hit. A USB connection between your computer and camera may also draw energy from your battery, so consider getting a card reader. If you get a backup battery, spend a little more and get the factory version instead of a cheaper, third-party choice. I tried that a few years ago and spent $20 to get one that was DOA. The seller also refused to refund my money. From then on, I always bought the same battery that Canon sold with the camera.

Rick - thanks for the suggestions. I do use a card reader. I didn't know that about third party batteries, good to know. There are way too many digital cameras out there and so hard to tell the difference between models. Why is one $300 more than another that seems almost to be identical. That is why I am still doing research.

I did buy a Canon PowerShot ELPH-100 instead because of a great deal at Costco, but it is going back. I need more than 4X zoom. I got use to a 10X and it is hard to go back to less. I would have kept the camera if it had more zoom. It was a nice little camera that took good pictures.

You are righ; Canon does not supply a manual with the PowerShot SX50 HS camera. Here'e what I did: I downloaded the manual from Canon's web site - all 285 pages in pdf format. I double sided printed the manual choosing the option that gave me a print zone of approximately 4 1/8 by 5 11/16 inches. Since double sided printing can get messed up, I broke the job into pieces printing a range of pages for example, printing 1 - 20 pages in the first batch, and then print 21 - 40 pages for the next batch, etc. Be careful to choose page ranges that ends with the the last page on the backside of the sheet (an even numbered page). Doing the job in sub-batches allows you to refill the sheet feeder when it gets low and to abort a batch in case of a foul up. The printout came out double sided on full sized pages and the front and back side print zones were perfectly aligned with each other. Next, I took the printout to my friendly Office Depot store to finish. They trimmed the sheets leaving a small border around the print zone and about 5/8 border on the left side for binding. I had my pages punched and bound with substantial plastic sprial material. This permits the book to be opened and folded back on itself. Office Depot added heavy translucent front and back covers. These covers protect the pages and keeps them from curling. I am very pleased with the results. The cost for the bindery was about $6. Office Depot could have bound the pages with adhesive like a paper back book, but I chose the spiral binding to allow the book to open flat and to turn back on itslef. It makes a nice field guide. The downloaded file can be printed to full letter size to make an office reference copy, however, I find that is not needed so long as I have the smaller camera bag copy.

There is devenitely rooom for imrovment and and I think they will attemp to make those improvements. All of above mentioned are 10MP and brand new so prices will be high for them. Lens _availability_ advantages go to Canon, Nikon and Pentax with Olympus in 4th place, however, Olympus makes some of the best lenses out there for a good price. They all have there advantages and disadvantages. Olympus iinroduced a new system called 4/3rds and most of the lens releases have been HQ and Very HQ since the first DSLR they released was "Pro" camera, but now Sigma is joining in on the concept so there are now lower priced lenes available. You can use the old OM mount lens but you have to get an adaptor, there cheap on ebay($16). I have the Canon Rebel XT but it sits on the shelf, it a great camera and but its shines in low light situations, high ISO. I am not usually shooting picture in the dark and my other Olympus DSLR make great pictures with the KIT LENSES! The kit lens with the Canon was crap, I ended up buying a new lens becuase it was so cheaply made, actually my wife bought it I just supplied the $$. I test drove the D50 for a few days and it had a serious banding issue. Again they are all good brands it just depends on which one you like the best. Hi jrzgurl: I personally do not know anything about the sony cybershot however my brother has a sony digital (sorry I don't know which one) and loves it...His particular model is much, much bigger than the canon sd600. I purchased the sd600 for my two university ages sons this christmas, they love the camera, very small, but they can still manage the buttons OK (sometimes bigger hands have trouble with these small cameras). The Canon takes an excellent picture and this one is very portable in your purse or pocket. I personally like Canon products.

When picking out a new camera, consider the little details that are easily overlooked. For example, how important is it to mount your camera on a tripod? Not all consumer-grade cameras include a tripod socket. What about viewfinders? In the store, the LCD viewer on the back of the camera looks great, but outdoors in bright sun, the image may be barely visible.
