Hi windowsonwashington and toddinmn, thanks for responding! It's really great to get somebody else's input. I love GardenWeb for the sense of community here. windowsonwashington, wow your comment about the pandora's box is spot on! That is a big worry for me after I managed to make a mess of this one window -- there are still a number of windows in the house that I can see have this aluminum in the side tracks. No double pane. This house was built in 1887, and these sashes seem to be the original, single pane, double-hung sashes. Of course, I could be wrong, and the sashes are not original. But the mouding/carving profiles on these sashes is the same as that on the ones here that still have the pulley&rope system, that I suspect at some point, the owner put the original sashes in this aluminum jamb liner/spiral balance combo. (And actually, the weight pockets for this window are still there with the weights in the pockets). The glazing is falling out in chunks whenever we open and close the sashes. I think it is just age and sun over time -- these windows face south. We knew that the glazing was going to have to be done at some point, but I didn't realize that these windows are put in so differently than the older pulley&weight window. Due to a reno last year, I had done a bit of work on a first floor window, and thought I had learned what I needed to know about taking out the sashes. toddinmn, You have a good point about re-glazing from the exterior. I think that I can do that with the similar ones that are on the first floor. But I am a bit nervous about doing it, with these on the second floor, up on the ladder and all. It's a great thought though -- I can at least investigate what sort of ladder and setup I'd need. And I still need a solution for the set of sashes that I wrested out of the window frame, because I don't see how that set of jamb liners is going to go back into the frame. Thanks! Lee

Steph - See the link below. To quote Groundspeak/geochaching.com "Geocaching is an entertaining adventure game for gps users. The basic idea is to have individuals and organizations set up caches all over the world and share the locations of these caches on the internet. GPS users can then use the location coordinates to find the caches. Once found, a cache may provide the visitor with a wide variety of rewards. All the visitor is asked to do is if they get something they should try to leave something for the cache." MaryAnn - Someone on the central TX site was selling a gently used unit last week: I'll try to email you the link since I just got a warning about trying to post a yah00 address. Here is a link that might be useful: Information about GeoCaching

Thanks for thinking of me! Petaloid was nice enough to call and check on me. Like she said, we have no power. Checking in now through cellphone. Estimated time to get our power back is midnight. I am hoping it will be earlier but prepared to wait until tomorrow to get it back. Most of the city is without power. There are some trees down in the neighbourhood but we only lost 1 big branch. It's a beautiful day now, sunny and 20 Celsius.

You're welcome! I loved "The Other Side of the Bridge". I read "Crow Lake" several years ago and don't remember much about it but I know I didn't like it as much as "The Other Side of the Bridge".
