The Kitchen Table

Computer question

A friend recommended a site quite a while ago, that's based out of NY and your server is routed through it. Since it's in the States he's able to watch US shows which we can't, here in Canada.

It's called Spot Flux. It worked for a while for me, but then it had an issue with Java or something.

Anyhoo I tried a fix that the company sent me......a re-install link. Holy crap, the thing started Deleting all of my files!!!!! I quickly went to Task Manager and stopped it from running. Panicked.

I uninstalled the whole darned thing. No more Spot Flux.

Do you know of a site that routes through another address like this?

Sounds like a trojan was trying to snap up any info on your computer. Gotta be careful when downloading. Google the site and the word problems and see what you find.

are you sure the link was a legit link to the same thing? It sounds like it could have been a re direct to something else. Or if it was legit it may have just been deleting the files associated with the spot flux and was then going to install the new fresh files. That happens when a corrupt file might be the problem it will first remove all the original files for the product then reinstall the new files.

Everything I have seen on spot flux sounds ok, it has pretty high ratings.
You might just go ahead and run a malwarebytes scan on your pc to make sure it was not some redirect malware that you got.
I recommend running an updated full malwarebytes free scan every couple of weeks anyway.

edit to add this link for anyone wanting to read a little about it and how it works.

I hope you're able to get your PC cleaned up. If this is an instance of the installation of unwanted items and that's happened before, that might suggest that your security software isn't doing its job. And/or that your internet use habits need to be reviewed a bit. Once you get things back to normal, if you're not using one already, you might consider using a well rated security system. When you use a comprehensive program, utilities like Win Patrol become unnecessary. Attached as information for other readers is a link with trusted ratings of available programs. The not-free versions tend to be more comprehensive. The better rated free ones are capable but many have fewer features. Getting a multi-user license you share within your family or friends can reduce the cost. Also, many internet providers provide top rated products for free to subscribers. Good luck Antivirus software ratings

A text file is a text file (letters and numbers). A jpg is a type of image file and it can't be converted to a text file without being processed by some kind of character recognition software. Some types of"text" files, like MS Word and equivalents, allow you to imbed an image in the middle of text but it remains an image. Like a photo or drawing. If your niece sent you scans or photos of text on a page, you need to read by using a photo or other image viewing software. Good luck.

My bet is webpage developer error.... they were probably working from a webpage template that said "contact.edu" and they were supposed to replace it with the actual email address of the person or dept or whatever. Follow the same format as the "realname" ones, but substituting the name of the person you want to contact, and it should work. If it doesn't work, all you'll get is a bounced email to verify it. Some mail servers will notify immediately if there's a bounce, and others will attempt delivery for days before you're notified of a bounce, so send it and wait. :)
