Online photo storage besides Photobucket?

Photobucket just doesn't play nicely for me no matter what I try. When I upload a single photo of an appropriate size, it just hangs (and hangs and hangs) and never finishes the upload.

What other options are there? Does anyone use something else that they like better?

I like Flickr. It's free up to 200 photos, I think, but I have a paid membership. Well worth it to me.

Camlan: you are one awesome ~ and super organized~ person! You've inspired me and I love your ideas and system!!! I'm following your system. After I read your suggestions, I ran down to the local Dollar Tree where I picked up 10 large plastic shoe boxes, ($10) which will temporarily hold my photos as I sort through them. I also bought 2 packs of (20 total) manila file folders ($2) that I'm going to cut up into dividers for each box to categorize the pics by year and then subcategories for events, holidays and whatever. I like your idea about scanning the best onto flash drives. I can store the master FD in our safe deposit box, I guess. I'd like to create DVDs with special events, holidays, vacations on them vents on them and then make copies for our two kids . . . eventually. I just went back to look at my intimidatingly huge box of photos and I'm so glad that I now have a plan of action to deal with them! Thank you for taking the time to put your ideas down for me and for many of us here who are in similar situations. I really appreciate it! Now, has anybody created their own DVD's from their scanned photos? I do want to make up some myself. I'm too frugal and too creative to have some company do it for me . . . but is it very difficult to do if you have a good photo scanner? Did you use any special program? DLM: I totally agree with you, I know many people that would love to hire Camlan to do this for them. Goldie: good luck with your own project. And, yes, definitely archival-quality albums and photo boxes. Eandhl: good idea and one I'm going to use: get rid of all copies (and similar) photos right away. Thanks! I only use photobucket for when I want a URL to upload photos to a website.. For backup I want a storage location that is not on my primary computer, but is also not subject to some hacker stealing my photos. I found the simplest solution is to get an external hard drive that is plug & Play ready through a USB port. If you check on Ebay you will see that external harddrives are super cheap. You can find them starting out at about $30 for 250 or 300gb, but they now have them in the 1TB range for $60 to $100 and they are so small they will fit in a shirt pocket. If your using a point & shoot camera, when you figure the file size even a 250gb will hold more photos than what your camera will produce before its worn out. I shoot an average of 500 shots a day with Pentax DSLR's and I have a 500gb ext that is about 1/2 full after a year, but I am not worried because Jan bought me a 1TB external for my birthday so I will probably wear out all three of my cameras before I run out of storage space.

Regardless of how much secutity they say they have, there is no site on the internet that cannot be hacked and once a photo or any other document is placed on the internet it can quickly be transferred to the public domain at large. You can get a 1TB plug & play external hard drive on Ebay for about $60. Connect the external to your computer long enough to transfer the files to the external hard drive, then disconnect the external and store it separately. I shoot about 500 photos a day and at the end of the day I connect an external and copy the files to the external hard drive, then disconnect the hard. Once a month I transfer the photos to a third external hard drive that I store at another location so if there happens to be a fire, flood or other disasster here, I still have an archive copy of my work.

I use imagecave for my eBay things. It is free up to a certain amount.

Flickr is really good. I have a couple friends that use it. I just dont have a need for it or I would too.

You can store up to a certain amount...then you have to pay for it, with flickr. I can't remember on the other two. I really like flickr...it's $24.95 a year and they have a great place to "play" with your pictures. I don't care for photobucket anymore either.

Rita - Great question. I don't post photos because I never got around to picking a web storing site. There are so many that it gets confusing especially if you're a beginner. I wonder if a photography site has ever compared them? I'll have to look into that.

I'm glad you wrote too, okwriter. I have just spent two days trying to post 2 pictures from Photobucket to a web site. Bah! Humbug! They are sure not user friendly.
Thanks for the other suggestions, I'll try one of those.

I think TinyPic only leaves them up for a few days, don't they? I've used them but it's been a long time ago. I'll add these last few to my list, though. It's going to be a few days before I have time to investigate, and I won't be able to find the thread by then!

Okwriter, I don't use TinyPics but have seen a number of others use it.

I just went to TinyPic's site and scoured through the terms and conditions and didn't anything that mentioned a time limit for uploaded images.
