photo and file storage/sharing site

The topic of where to store photos comes up often, also how to store files to have an extra copy in case it is needed for backup.

A site I recently found out about called minus.com is one that can provide both photo storage and sharing as well as file storage and sharing. They give you 10gig free which is quite a bit. And it is very easy to use you really do just drag it from your pc to the webpage. Here is an article on gizmo's site about it.

minus.com

And for those with smartphones and android devices it has an app for that!

Here is a link that might be useful: minus

Regardless of how much secutity they say they have, there is no site on the internet that cannot be hacked and once a photo or any other document is placed on the internet it can quickly be transferred to the public domain at large.

You can get a 1TB plug & play external hard drive on Ebay for about $60.

Connect the external to your computer long enough to transfer the files to the external hard drive, then disconnect the external and store it separately.

I shoot about 500 photos a day and at the end of the day I connect an external and copy the files to the external hard drive, then disconnect the hard.

Once a month I transfer the photos to a third external hard drive that I store at another location so if there happens to be a fire, flood or other disasster here, I still have an archive copy of my work.

this was meant for those that need a place to store a picture to be able to post it here on this or other forums, ebay, etc, photobucket has gone through big changes and there was a recent post asking for other good alternatives. The fact that you can simply drag and drop makes it quite easy and it gives all the links then to use on the various forums.

I of course have multiple backups including external drives and cloud storage, for all my important files and data.

Hi, I´m back again. I personally think that if u want a pic for your own eyes only do not put it in the Net in any way. Keep it for you and your eyes only. Mark you pics and let everyone share it, that woul be nice and wise. A pic may show more than a thousand words so lets help the others...and remember if u want it for your own keep it below the mattress and dream about it. Lets get sharingness(?). My English is a barbarian one´s. Well I live in Brazil and I cultivate Dyckias. I have may pics of Dyckias in nature and in my garden and in my friends´garden. Many dyckias´pic with no cientific name yet and many your eyes never were set uppon them. I want to share. May someone explain to me in plain simple words how and what I have to do put them in here? Thanks Constantino - from Brazil with respect

I'm in a pocket zone 5 here. But make no mistake, it shifts. One year, like last year, it was in the middle of October, the year before Nov 11th. That's a month difference. Last year it was just the one deep long frost, not quick it was nasty, it got a few of mine. The threats will have me on a roller coaster again this year. Anxiety attacks no doubt. 3day notices of the threats aren't much to work with. I've never been one much for big risks/gambles, but now I have to. I think I plan to bring in the ground planted ones early this year, one at a time type of thing...lol...except the older bigger ones will be left in the ground for testing...lol. There is nothing in the ground that's not also in a pot, I just don't know which would of turned out the best right now but the movable potted ones will probably do much better when all is said and done. If I didn't have so many, I'd repot the ground planted ones, many of which are bigger than the potted ones, when the season is threatening and move it about as needed. I want the longest season possible for those in the pots. -Sandy

Nate, I am doing fine with Photobucket, but it does have a learning curve. Julia had an excellent post on it not long ago. Not many of us like change, and I surely didn't, but it works pretty well now. not perfect, but pretty good. kay

Flickr underwent an overhaul this year to make it more flexible & easier. It's become my favorite photo sharing site of the three that I use. What I like about it is they've made it fast and easy to upload batches of photos, to tag, sort, label & organize them, and you can display them in a variety of sizes. I think the quality of the photo display is excellent too. On some sites, the photo quality diminishes after uploading. But on Flickr, the photos are still crisp, colorful & large enough to see detail. For GW purposes, Flickr displays the html code in a choice of sizes to copy for hotlinking. Also, the Flickr Android app is terrific. It's so easy to connect to Flickr & show photos on my phone. The phone display quality is great. I shoot photos with several different types of cameras, including a 40-year-old film camera (I scan the film & upload to Flickr), and the Android app is excellent for sharing my work with various classes, clubs, friends & family. I'm really impressed with it.

Ravencajun - thanks for the suggestion. I haven't gotten around to posting photos because I wanted something simple. I'll definitely check this out.

On Flickr you can post photos and decide whether you want anyone to be able to use your photo (Creative Commons) or whether you do not. I'm happy that somebody wanted to use my photo of the Smithsonian Museum or the photo gallery at the US Supreme Court. They don't need to hack to get photos from Flickr. If somebody wants to get the photo of my sunflowers and put it on their wall--I hope it makes their little homes look better. Hackers are a problem with businesses--they are trying to get at our online banking; they never bother with our photos.
