I've worked for over 40 years and remember the 2 jobs I quit because I just didn't fit. Currently I'm a dog groomer. Years ago I went to work for a Vet I knew who was starting his practice.It was closer to home and better money but after 4 days I knew I had to leave.I could not work there. He was really upset with me but I could live with that. I've worked at my current job for 8+ years and it's a great fit.
Follow your heart. Call. If your old job is no longer offered, at least you will never wonder "what if".

It does take time to get used to a new job. Plus you also have to realize things are NOT like they used to be, everything has changed and jobs are very scarce these days. If you don't have to work... look for something else, if you do I would sit tight and try to get used to it. If you can get your old job back go for it, Or you can always bring a book to read at the new one. I wish you good luck an I hope you make the right decision.

I would give it more time, say about three months. It is possible that the pace of the office is slow, because the economy is slow, or because it is summer and everyone is on vacation (I mean your company's clients). Business may pick up after everyone is back from summer break, or if the economy starts to de-slug.

Try to learn all you can about the business and see if you can create projects for yourself, if that is possible. Build tracking spreadsheets, customer databases, whatever you can dream up.

In the mean time, start silently looking for other job opportunities, in case this one never meshes with what you want. No point in leaving a job until you have another one on deck.

I believe you need to honestly think about why you were set on leaving the original job ... I don't remember details, but kinda-sorta remember that you had specific reasons for leaving and were VERY upset that the boss tried to match your salary after you said you were leaving. Whatever was wrong back then ... probably is still wrong. Now that you've seen the 'other side' (as in, the grass is always greener on the other side) you can determine whether your earlier frustrations are more tolerable now.

*If* you go back to the old job, don't look for any raises or promotions for a long, longgggg time. You already know your old bosses position on that! There were probably other reasons for your leaving the old job, right?

That they don't have a lot of structured duties for you in this new job is an opportunity for you to get creative & find some things to do to help build & promote your new employer. Were you "told what to do" in your old job? You might need to develop a new mindset in that regard.

So, my advice is not to go backward. Try to make this job into what will be fulfilling for you. If you can't or won't do that,,,,,, then look for another job. I think at best you would be satisfied only temporarily in the old job and your old boss now knows for certain that she can't count on you to stay.

I second bee's answer above. She's right on! There's a lot of truth in the old saying "you can't go home". The most important part of her message is that your old boss will never forget and frankly neither will you. A little of that resentment for not being recognized for your work will always be there.

You can always find better and more efficient ways to do your work and while doing that, you will find more things to do to fill your time productively.

If that fails or if your new boss discourages your ability to expand your workload, then look for a job somewhere else where your talents can be utilized.

I know I have to give it more time, it just has been extremely frustrating. I have to say companies do not "train" people anymore, I have found that true in most of my jobs. I'll quit my gripping and stick it out. I guess just having a real bad moment when I vented..

I had a new hire orientation today and I asked one of the Supervisors if I could shadow her when she visited some of our offsites this week. So, if my direct report wont make time for me, I'll find someone in the building to help me LOL

oooh boy, you sound just like me a few months ago; and sometimes even now. I went from companies with at least 200 employees, to over 5,000. Now I'm working for a very small company with less than 50 people. It is really tough. I've tried everything. It's been difficult to balance having absolutely nothing to do for weeks on end, against my mortgage payment - LOL. Not sure if you have been able to talk to you manager or not but I know first hand that's not always the best thing to do, politically. But it might be worth a try. Maybe you could start looking for another position while you don't have much going on. Most hiring managers will understand your situation. The other thing - you may not even have to include them on your resume, if you change jobs soon.

Best wishes to you - I really, really, really, know your pain. It's OK to feel that way, and to want to change. Just don't do it until you have another job - a SIGNED offer letter in your hand.

I agree with BeeOhio and Pris, above. Where I work, we've had several employees leave "for greener pastures" and then come back again. One guy has left and come back twice! And everyone in the division has a little less respect for the folks who leave and then come back.
