North Rim of the Grand Canyon

After we left Page, AZ we headed to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. The North Rim is prettier than the South Rim it also doesn't have fences so you have to be very careful when getting close to the edge.

Beautiful! When I was there, it was winter. It never occured to me that it would ever be green. Duh (on my part)! What I thought was cool were the clouds and shade. You could be standing in shade and all of the topography close by be shady, and across the canyon, all bright and sunny. Matter of fact, I think you have rain in your next to last picture. On the left side, while the right is full sun.

Sherry Picture below is of a female P. i. kaibabensis. It's easy to notice the differences in it from the other two similar big black swallowtails found in North America (P. polyxenes & P. bairdii). On kaibabensis there is a much larger area of submarginal blue scaling and it doesn't have the yellow "dots" on the abdomen that the others do. Interestingly this bug in the Grand Canyon is also the one that lead to the only serious pursuit and prosecution of butterfly poachers in this country. I knew all three men charged, and unfortunately they all got off way too easy. Anyway, I have the whole story saved as doc files if anybody wants to read them (just drop me an email). You must live in one of the few places in the world (outside of Antarctica) that doesn't have Pieris rapae Sherry. LOL If you think you'd like Neophasia menapia, you'd go bonkers over N. terlooii or better yet any species from my favorite lep family worldwide... the Parnassinae. Larry

Jerry: Our local paper has a great story about Death Hollow in Utah, today! Three guys took it upon themselves to hike into the hollow! What troubles befell them--hiking in and swimming in ice cold water, rappelling down the canyon walls! They hiked as far as they could, in the canyon, but the deepening, icy cold water told them they'd better get back out and come another day! There is also a half-page picture of one of the guys rappeling down the canyon wall! WOW! What a great place to visit, albeit, by way of newspaper articles. How i'd like to go there, but, with advancing age, and gasoline prices being what they are, I'll have to stick to reading about it! Another man took a trip to the Valley of The Gods! He traveled by way of Utah Rt. 261, known locally as the Trail of The Ancients! He says all was going well, until he came to the road that had been dug out to haul uranium back in the 1950's. It runs from Cedar Mesa down into the canyon. He reports there is a bed and breakfast in the area where he stayed. So, have an enjoyable summer, traveling amongst the Mesa's and Buttes! As for me, I'll stay in our beautiful mountains and flat lands of Pennsylvania, where the flowers grow, and the Bluegrass music flows! Have fun: Rusty Jones

Sister and her DH did one in Vegas last fall and actually bought a double one! Seems they get attached suites, each having their own kitchen, LR & BR's so they can ask people to join them. No, not swingers--just like to travel with others in the family. And he was newly retired and they do like to travel. On the way there, they had decided "no matter what they present, the answer is NO." But they're sure they got a great deal. Used it once so far for a second week in Vegas with his sister & BIL and now are planning for everyone to come to a place a couple hours from here for a "family thing" next Fall. Several significant B'days next year--40th, 50th and two 70th but not everyone is thrilled with their plans. We'll see.

For those of you who hate the gambling part but are going to a casino, I have a great idea for you, and I promise loads of entertainment: people watching. Find a good spot somewhere in the casino where many people walk by, get yourself a beverage and people watch. I think that is the best part of my job, every time I think I have seen it all, the door opens and someone else walks in. It is truly the best free sport ever. I agree with all of you on the smoke. I don't smoke, but in my casino we have the luxury of floor vents that blow straight up and push the smoke to the ceiling where we have good ventilation. I rarely come home smelling smoky, although that is part of the business. For those of you afraid to play the table games, don't be. The dealer will help you (they can't tell you what to do but they will give you tips on what the best strategy is - remember, they work for tips almost exclusively, so it is in their best interest to help you) and the other players will help you as well. You are all there for the same goal: win and have fun. For those of you who play slots, did you know that the penny slots are the tightest, quarters and nickles are second, and the higher denominations pay out the most frequently? If you play slots, ALWAYS play the max coin. If you only want to play one dollar in the dollar slots, save your money and go to a quarter machine and play the 3 coin max. You will get a higher payout in the long run. It just kills me to see people playing penny slots and only playing 5 or 10 pennies, save your money and play the max coin on a nickle machine! And never, ever forget to tip your beverage server for even the "free" sodas or coffee. Most servers are charged 20 cents for each soda they put on a tray to carry around, then people take them without tipping. If you just give them 50 cents or a $1 for a couple of sodas they will make sure you always have what you need. Same with slot people, they work for tips too and LOVE when people hit jackpots. Dealers are the same. Ours make less than $5/hour so they totally rely on tips to make their money. Betting with the dealer is what they love best, they want you to win your bet because then they win the tip bet as well. It makes for a lot more fun with the dealers. Just my casino tips.

We went there this summer for a quick trip and as soon as we left my husband said he wants to return for a week. It was beyond beautiful, as was the scenery along the way.

I remember how my breath was taken away when I saw the Grand Canyon. I was on the South Rim. I'd love to see the North Rim. I also remember a ranger saying that a few people die there every year doing foolish things, so fer pete's sake, be careful!

They sell a book in the gift shops there telling the stories of all the deaths. Many are from the hikes up or down. We went this summer. It was even nicer than I imagined. Now I want to see the other side!

I used to work for the parent company that owned all the resorts around the canyon. Never made it there (quick trip to Flagstaff was the closest I got) but have always wanted to visit.

The North Rim has a shorter season (May 15 - Oct 15, limited day use after Oct 15) because it's at a higher elevation and gets snow pretty early. Summer is supposed to be rather spectacular there and I'm totally envious!

I have been on both sides with my youngest daughter, and only on the south with my older daughter. My older daughter is very afraid of heights, and this was just not for her.

With the younger one, it was two separate bicycling trips, a long time ago.

I was in AWE, on both sides.

Lori and I hiked down on the south side, but were on a longer bike ride on the north, and didn't hike down.

I also heard about the book after seeing a rather brave but stupid kid get up onto a rock with his guitar and pose for pictures. We saw another couple climb up onto a rock and sit on the edge. I was visiting with a couple and they said there are plenty of park rangers, but everyone is on their own when they want to take chances and go beyond the walking path.

my mother always told her company(when she lived in vegas) to go to the north rim, as there was less traffic..i do know certain winters the road has been closed due to snow....
