I need a gift idea, too!

This is for a good friend who is retiring. He's a nerdy accountant who: likes to flower garden; just starting camping with his wife, adult dtrs and two gdtrs so just bought deluxe everything; used to do beautiful stained glass work but doesn't any more though he still has all his tools; enjoys wine and good food (we go out to dinner once a month or so); and, naturally, he has absolutely every thing. We'd like to spend around $50, but I can't imagine on what, and I know the guy! When my hub retired they gave him a hammock, if that helps.

Since he just started camping, how about a book about the best places to camp in America plus a gift card to Sports Authority, or another store that sells camping supplies?

We had the same problem for years. We have a group of seven couples (all close in age). We would take trips together once every year or so but during the year we would take turns hosting a monthly dinner. Of course this always necessitated a hostess gift. All of us are comfortably off and at our age have everything (material) that we want or need. It drove me crazy because I was constantly being gifted with craft type items. I am just not into cutesy things and I had a difficult time coming up with items that I thought the other ladies would enjoy or use. I failingly ended up giving food items or fresh flowers. We all finally came to a consensus that we should stop doing hostess gifts and at Christmas put funds together to donate to a charity. Thank goodness! The pressure every month is off and we can give to those in need. It's a win/win.

Thank you very much for the ideas. I've been checking around at Goodwill, consignment shops, etc for a bread machine, roaster and dehydrator with no luck. I may have better luck after Christmas or in the spring for what I don't get now. I saw a Hamilton Beach bread machine at Sears for $60 that looked nice, but haven't made a decision yet. I liked the ideas for the personal things but since we live in different towns I have no idea where she gets her hair cut or pedicures. The only clothing I would dare buy without with me are PJs. We have totally different body builds and tastes in clothes. I did get her a purse last night. She called and was going to a big sale at Macy's and wanted to know if I wanted to buy her a purse...LOL. Not much of a surprise, but I do know she likes it. The dehydrator she only mentioned in passing that's why I'm not sure how much she would use it. I do need to snoop around in her kitchen and see what she needs replaced after the ex took things. I'm sure she could use a few new pots and pans since he ruined 2 sets while they were married. If we get to go there this weekend I'll try to do some snooping around.

There is a small stand who sets up at our local mall each Christmas and they sell all sorts of Calendars. There are usually three or four Quilt-themed wall calendars in the mix with beautiful blocks on each page. My heart sings when I see them and what a wonderful and useful item to set in a sewing room, or even a kitchen in a quilter's house. They run a little more than ten dollars, but when you factor in the fuel it takes looking for a gift in a specific range, you're usually better off going a little more if you find 'just the right thing' than half a tank of gas. That works for me, lol. For my b'day last month, I asked for a LARGE pin cusion. I was getting so frustrated with the tiny cushions one usually finds in places like fabric stores. We quilters use a lot of pins at any given time and I used to have to have two boxes of pins and pin cushion handy on my ironing board and near my sewing machine. My dd found a big, fat pincushion and it's just what I wanted. Ditto on the retractable tape measure. I carry one in my purse my husband gave me and it comes in handy often. Also things like a bias cone for making your own bias. All three are prolly less than ten dollars apiece.

We are definitely into the countdown & I have started - my DH is in food sales and gives each of his customers gifts (about 40 of them!). I start right after Christmas & get gifts for the next year on clearance. Usually we give books, candles, and ornaments and I try and stay under $5 for each. I have started buying for family too - all the grands - kids & neices & nephews (all 20 of them) get books. I purchase from a catalog/website that has on sale & clearance - I try to find books under $5 (for the customers mentioned above also). If you want the name of the website please e-mail me. For our 4 kids we wait until we get a list from them. I have bought items off the list & then got their list and ended up spending too much! For brothers & sisters & immediate nieces & nephews - I make jam/jelly & they each get a jar of wonderful goodness - we grow the fruit & then I make jam & jelly for them. I am about 1/2 way done on that... I don't post all that often - but I enjoy lurking - what a wonderful group of people. Thanks.

Since he likes going out to eat, why not search out a new restaurant that's got a good reputation, that he may not have tried yet and give a gift certificat to that?

A special bottle of wine or two? A gardening book with SheilaJoyce's idea of a GC to a nursery. Or a pair of gardening gloves - they always wear out.

What about a really nice garden flag, or large yard flag & pole, and hanger of course. They have tons on ebay if you can't find them at a garden center.

Did you see my thread a couple of weeks ago about the two vintage Porsche ads I bought and framed? That might be an idea for you if you can think of one of his special interests (his car?) and have enough time to do it. (I bought the ads on eBay.)

Are they camping in an RV? Maybe books on the subject? A pair of binoculars?

How about a wine aerator? True wine lovers already have one of these but perhaps your friend doesn't.

Excellent ideas. Thanks to all of you. Hub and I will be shopping this afternoon. He likes the garden supplies idea with a bottle of wine in it, I'm leaning toward camping equipment - and wine!
