I'm making a toddler recipe book....help!

For my DIL to be, Austin's mommy I am making a cookbook for her bridal shower! I am looking easy and quick recipes for Austin. I am including a picture of him on every page and the having it all put in a book from shutterfly. I have 10 recipes so far and need 10 more. Anyone have any ideas in a recipe form for toddlers? Here are 5 of the 10 I have done. It's so much fun putting them together, but finding the recipes isn't as easy as I thought it would be. I need to keep them somewaht simple or they will be useless! LOL..she's a good cook but is always trying to come up with new ideas for Austin. I want to give this to her at her bridal shower along with some other cookbooks I got her. Any ideas would be welcomed!

I don't have any toddler recipes, but I wanted to say that those are the cutest recipe book pages I've ever seen!

Have you checked out Jessica Sinfields book? She had some good ideas there just right for toddlers.........lots of hidden protein and such. Look at your local library for a copy.

Hello, Caroline. Cooking and baking been one of my things since I was a child. My dad walked me through my first baking project, a cake made from a mix, when I was ten. I was twelve, when I made my first apple pie, all on my own. My mom wasn't home at the time. She was astonished, when she walked in and discovered me taking a beautiful apple pie from the oven. This recipe was given to me by a Canadian friend. It was his grandmother's recipe. It makes a lovely presentation, and is inexpensive as company fare. It is a ground pork and onion dinner pie. TOURTIERE Pastry (I really like this pastry) 2 cups white flour 2 tsp. baking powder 1/2-1 tsp. salt (depending on your taste for salt) 1/3 cup butter 1/2 cup vegetable shortening 1/3-1/2 cup cold water l tablespoon vinegar Combine flour, baking powder and salt. Work in the butter and shortening with a pastry cutter. If you don't have a pastry cutter, you can use your fingers. Combine water and vinegar, then lightly stir them into the flour. Sprinkle your dough with flour, then knead it for one minute Divide dough into two balls, wrap in plastic, and chill for 30 minutes or more. To use, roll out each half of your dough, separately, on floured board and cut to fit the size of your pie plate. (Invert your plate over the rolled dough and cut two circles an inch larger in diameter.) I use a 9" pie plate. Meat filling: 1-3/4s pounds ground pork 2 medium onoins, chopped 1 clove garlic, minced 1 cup water 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. dry mustard 3/4s tsp. sage or savory 1/2 tsp. thyme 1/4 tsp. black pepper 1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg 1-1/2 tablesppons white flour egg glaze: 1 egg white, slightly beaten with 1 tablespoon water. Cook ground pork in a large frying pan until it loses pink color. Push meat to the side, or temporarily remove from pan, so you can saute onion and garlic. Drain off fat. Add water, salt, mustard and seasonings to combined meat, onion and garlic mixture. Cover and simmer 15-20 minutes. Sprinkle with your 1-1/2 tablespoons of flour, sift it first so it won't lump up, and simmer for about 3 minutes until mixture thickens a bit. Fill your pastry lined pie plate with meat mixture. Cover top with your extra sheet of pastry. Flute/seal edges, cut three 1" steam slits across the top, and brush egg glaze over the top so that it will brown nicely. There are those who can't seem to understand why others threaten to "rid" those problem cats. Usually some owners of pets. Yet those who have to deal with other's pets, which is what cats are, who continue over and over to destroy and leave filth on other's own private property is a nuisance. There are some that should not own pets, that do not care what is done to neighbors. Those same people are the ones who have no say in what can or can't be done to remove those problems. What happens with these pets come down to the owner. Control them or don't. Would you let your children run free to trash and urinate on other people's property? If so, maybe others will return the favor to you and your home. Since it is apparently no problem there.

My brother had to start cooking for himself and my nephew very suddenly. My nephew was really too young to do much, and my brother worked full time, so dinners had to be quick and easy. One suggestion of mine that he took to quite well was to buy the family size packages of meat to save money, separate them into meal-sized portions, and freeze the meats in zip lock bags with marinade. That way, he removes a bag from the freezer before bed, and by dinner time the following day, he has pre-marinated meat to throw on the grill or under the broiler. I did get him a rice cooker, which he likes because both he and my nephew will eat rice plain or with just a bit of soy, which keeps the fat grams down (as opposed to most potatoes or noodles, which must have some butter or sauce). His girlfriend gave him a crock pot, and a crock pot cookbook which gets a lot of use as well. They also eat lots of salads, which they both like. I told him to cut the stem end off when he got the lettuces home, and soak them in a sink full of cool water for a couple of hours before draining them and putting them in a plastic bag with a towel to soak up any residual moisture, They keep nicely for a week or so that way, and he keeps a container of pre-cut salad vegetables in the fridge so making a salad is fast and easy. Planning is the key, all right. A couple of hours on the weekend, and the week can go much more smoothly.

Follow-up. Food is a funny thing. There are very strong cultural,regional, ethnic and class components that influence what people eat. I'm not really interested in debating them, but I have certainly observed them. Most parents I know really try to limit added sugar, especially at the youngest ages, and would never serve soda or fast food to children (or really anyone; these foods are reviled). Some are more doctrinaire than others, which is not my business. When I have guests of any age, I try to make things they would enjoy (hence the post) but that are also relatively healthy. Most anyone appreciates eating healthy ... so long as it tastes good. Also, I never said the 4yr olds were foodies, I said the parents are. And it is a dinner party, not a "party" so it was a fairly calm affair and we all ate together and all ate the same thing. So, anyway. I tried out the grilled pizza recipe and it was, in DH's words an "unmitigated disaster." I could not get the dough as thin as i wanted, and when I got the grill to 500 as per the recipe, the bottom burned well before the top and inside were cooked. I tried several iterations and lowered the heat a few times but never got a crust I liked.Good thing I tested it! Instead, i used flour tortillas (btw the brand below is very good if you have not tried it). I brushed each side w olive oil and put them on the grill until they were just golden and started to puff up. Then everyone grabbed one and put what they wanted on it. I had a large assortment of cheeses, meats and veggies, and a large green salad. The finished "pizza" went back on the grill long enough to make the cheese bubbly. I had to laugh at one of the 4yr olds who I helped "decorate" her pizza. I had fresh mozzarella, fresh ricotta, shredded mozzarella, shaved parmesan, and a TJ 4-cheese blend. I asked her what kind of cheese she liked. Her reply? "Manchego." LOL maybe there are 4yo foodies! Only grown ups ate the key lime tartlets, as expected. The fondue was delish and very very popular w the kids. I had strawb, kiwi, banana, ladyfingers and graham crackers. All in all the menu was a hit. I will have to try pizza dough on the grill another time! PS In the past I made my own flour tortillas, or got them from a local restaurant; the supermarket ones were too pasty to me. But these are really quite good.

I haven't checked out her book yet. My other DIL is buying it and I'll look at it then. I just hope she gets it in time for me to finsh this book. I did hear about it and it sounds great. I was hoping to find similar ones online. Ricky is a very picky eater so I hope it helps get some veggies into him! Thanks ladies!

Heavens, I could give you hundreds--I used to teach a Kindergarten Storybook Cooks Class.

Without opening my files, here are a few ideas that have always been popular with my little students:

Walk-Away Breakfast Sundaes--press a large marshmallow into the bottom of a flat-bottomed ice cream cone. Spoon in diced fruit (fresh or canned), spoon in fruit-flavored yogurt. Top with a sprinkling of Granola. (Ice cream cones are also a good way to serve egg or chicken salad, for a fun change)

Butterflies (used with "The Very Hungry Caterpillar")--spread cream cheese or peanut butter in celery sticks. Add small pretzels for wings, raisins for eyes, and broken pretzel pieces for antennae.

Grilled Apple Cheese Sandwiches--Use Raisin or cinnamon bread, sliced apples, cheese (American, mild or sharp Cheddar), and--if desired--some raisins or walnuts. Grill as you would a regular grilled cheese. I used to make these for DD when she was little--she's grown and STILL requests them from time to time. Alternatively, you can do the same thing with a whole wheat tortilla to make an apple cheese quesadilla

How about BBQ meatballs (for "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs"). Put a pound of ground beef into a heavy duty ziplock bag, add a teaspoon or so of grill seasoning, a small handful of bread crumbs. Seal the bag, squish together. Make meatballs using a cookie scoop (Good place to teach about food sanitation and the dangers of touching raw meat). Put in a microwave-safe dish. Zap 5-6 minutes or until done. Make the sauce using Ketchup or chili sauce and grape (or other favorite) jelly. Spoon over and microwave another few minutes to glaze. Another very popular kid-pleaser.

Mouse Cookies (If You Give a Mouse A Cookie) Shape slices of refrigerator dough into teardrop shapes (the body). Cut another slice into quarters--use 2 to make ears, press into the mouse. Add raisins or sunflower seed eyes. Bake. You can add a licorice tail after they're baked.

Spaghetti Salad (Strega Nona)--Using a clean pair of safety scissors or a plastic knife, the child can cut up: pepperoni, sun-dried or grape tomatoes, cheese (such as provolone), green peppers, etc and add to a bowl of cold spaghetti. Add a little bottled Italian dressing.

Mystery Lemonade Cookies ("The Lemonade Mystery") Mix:1 cup Bisquick, 1 small box instant lemon pudding, 1/4 cup oil, 1 egg. Shape into small balls and roll in: 1/4 cup sugar. Place on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. Cool on a wire rack.

Custard's Easy Tarts (The Tale of Custard the Dragon) Make instant pudding, spoon into individual graham cracker tart shells, top with fruit and/or Cool Whip.

A few practical tips for mom. Put a piece of that spongy drawer liner under the bowl when a toddler is stirring--helps keep the bowl from slipping and sliding.

Always use a much larger bowl than necessary--it's easier for a small one to keep everything in the bowl that way.

Keep tasks simple and always have an adult helper on hand to do the more dangerous work.

Even very young children can be taught to cut properly--I recommend a plastic knife, soft foods such as lunchmeat or canned fruit, and a pie pan. Cutting in a pie pan helps catch any bits that fly or roll away. Scissors are also a good way for youngsters to cut some foods.

Children are often more likely to try a new food, if they've gotten to prepare it themselves. Great way to get them really interested in cooking and eating.

Woo hoo!!! Thanks for the links mamatoad, I have seen the familyfun.com, but the other one never came up in my searches. I kept coming up with the same old sites...and thanks to you Azzalea for all the ideas! Those are great and just what I was looking for....easy and fun ones! Now I can finish the book and get it ordered! I did one using the ice cream cone and cottage cheese, love those kind! I will for sure use some of these! I'm off the check mamatoads other link........I'd still love other recipes if anyone has some. I am going to make a book for a few of the kids that I take care of for Christmas too.
