Teenagers and traveling can be a challenge!

As much as I love love love my grandson, they can be a challenge. Trust me, I know.

Don't mean to say we didn't have a GREAT FANTASTIC TIME, but there are times :o)

Thankfully he met up with two great teens, and they connected.

They had the teen program, which started at 10 pm, had their own club,so I knew no matter what time he came in, he was fine., with no worry. He was always in no later then 1:00 am, and was ready to rise and shine for early 8:00 am excursions.

We'll go again. Maybe, if he wanna!

Grandmother/grandson bonding time meant so much.

I know what ya mean, Glenda...my four grandkids were on that same cruise with me a month ago...one aged 16, one 14, one 12, and one 9 who THINKS he is 15! What did he think of any of the shows? Or did he attend? Did he spend any time in the arcade?

I'd rather travel with teenagers than preschoolers. Way easier and more fun!

flyleft, My son does have ADD. He was diagnosed at the children's hospital when he was 15 and yes, it is the inattentive type. He is a very different boy with treatment and the support of a therapist. His diagnosis was rather late and many years were wasted blaming his problems on other things. I was thinking of this in context of the strong willedness of the OP's son because I would also have described my son in those terms. After we dug deeper and got his diagnosis and then got some help he started to accept that his attitude was not helping him any. He is doing much better now, is more pleasant and also seems happier. He was also a very anxious and often depressed child, very anxious young teen, before we got help for him. I even took him to a center for anxiety for almost 2 years of therapy! This was at a major university where they specialized in this sort of thing. I asked repeatedly of the therapist at the anxiety center: Is there a chance he has ADD? She insisted repeatedly: No. Well, she was wrong and when I think of the years wasted on an incorrect diagnosis I cringe. But anxiety IS part of ADD too. Lots of people, professionals included, associate ADD with destructive wild behavior and fail to realize it has other forms. So when I hear strong willed and anxious I can't help but wonder if there's more to this picture. ADD might be an issue.

Just a funny story about cell phones, that happened to me, last year. I was a supervisor in an examination at my DS school. It was a serious exam and about 100 students where in the school hall, nervous and anxious. They had all been told they must leave there cell phones (in Australia we call them mobile phones) on a table near the door. They where also told they must be turned off. Well half way through the exam one of the phones on the table starting playing a stupid song, ringing. I rushed over to the table and frantically looked through all the phones, trying to stop the noise. I finally did that, but students where restless. Then to my horror I realized about half the phones where switched on ! There must have been about 90 of them. So I spent ages, and ages, turning them off, all these different phones. Some I just could not work out how to do it, as I am technologically challenged to say the least. So next exam, I made sure, I stood near that table and said in a big lound voice "make sure they are turned off, please!". Phones, stressing me out ! Popi

Try starting with a clean slate. Your son is at an age of self accountability and should make decissions based on right or wrong, not on what his parents want. Of course parents want thier children to make the right decisions, so please don't take that the wrong way. My suggestion is you sit him down and tell him all the good things you have told us about him, let him know what a bright individual you think he is and that you know he wants to be trusted. Tell him right now he has lost some or all of you and your husbands trust due to his recent action. Tell him you want to give him the opportunity to earn that trust back and you are wiping the slat clean and starting fresh to give him the opportunity to earn your trust back. Explain that he has chores because he is part of your family and in every family every one has to take part in chores so it is not left to just mom and dad to work and do all of the house work. Besides next year he will be 18 years old and can get a place of his own, then he will have to do ALL the housework with no one to split the duties with. Tell him you are giving him an opportunity to regain your trust by allowing him to start fresh. Lay down your rules again, but this time in writing and have him sign the agreement stating he understands your rules and is willing to abide by them as long as he lives in your household. In return he will experience more freedom by regaining your trust through making good decisions for himself. Put the ball in his field. He is after all 17, one more year and he can live on his own, he needs to be treated more like an adult then a juvenile. Concequences for adult decisions can be far more drastic then what you can hand out. Once he lives on his own, he will make the decisions for his own household and his outlook will be different. For him to only now, at 17, to be acting out, he has done better then most teens who have acted out at a much earlier age. Much credit to you both as parents. He may be struggling between teenage and adult years in his own mind. It's just a suggestion, toss it if you don't agree.

Comfortable Travel pants with closing pockets for women? Stores ?

Thanks. I just got back from the trip. After ordering and returning several pairs of women's pants, where the pockets were too shallow for practicality, or the rise was too low, or the fabric contained spandex (too hot for the desert where I was going), I was out of time. Following a suggestion on another forum, what I ended up buying in-store was men's rip-stop 100% cotton pants. They had both deep front pockets and cargo pockets. I had to buy them large enough to accommodate a woman's derriere (not large by any means, but larger than a man's), then take them in at the waistband. I can sew and tailor, but even for someone with few skills in this area, it was very easy to do. (I mention this in case someone else needs to take the same route.) I HAD bought 1 pair of women's pants from L. L. Bean that fit (at 3 x the price of the men's pants I bought locally), but only wore them once. They have spandex and were much too hot.

Teenagers are tough.....no doubt about it. I'm surprised he's still wanting to go with you. Just shows you what a good sport you are and how much fun you are to be with.

A cruise was a great idea. He had enough opportunities to socialize with kids his own age as well as spend time with you.
Traveling with others, no matter what the age can be difficult. They always say that you don't know someone unless you live with them!
When I travel with others, or even just have week long guests, I have to mindfully take a step back and think about how things will play out. It will mean a lot of compromise on my part, but you want the end result to be a positive one.
Sounds like you accomplished that, Glenda.

Glender, these are the memory-making years, when he loves being with his Gramma - you are his lady-love during this precious time. When he gets a few years older and finds that special someone, Gramma will get occasional visits, but they won't be as memorable as these days are. When he brings that first Grandbaby into your life, the memory days will start again - I love this time in my life, too. Many, MANY hugs to you, my Friend - I love you!

Glenda, these are memories he will carry his whole life....wonderful memories. My memories of my own grandmother are not good. She was known throughout the family for how mean she was....and that was true. She was very mean to me, what little time I was around her.

Oh, Marilyn - I am so sorry! It was the old lady's loss - very sad. My Grandmas passed away before I was born, so I didn't get to experience the beauty of being with Gramma, so I spend ALL the time I can with mine - what a beautiful time we have. I try to make their time with me as enjoyable and memorable as I know how - ie - I SPOIL THEM! LOL

try driving from ca to mi..lol..when we moved here, dd1 drove her clunker, mom drove with her if she needed a break (but didn't) i drove with ds2, the twins, and 2 cats!

must admit when the clunker broke down in salina ks at least we found a place to stay and a great steak house, lol...
