I had a first tonight....stitches...!!!!

I was trying to throw a full piece of plywood on the burn pile. I stood it up on end and gave it a push...and it kind of turn and fell back at me. I put my hands out and a rusty screw sticking out of it caught me in the palm of my left hand, cutting it about 2 inches...over an inch of it was quite deep...and was gapping open.

It has been a long time since I've had a tetnus shot.

I called Denny (he was on his way to the park) to tell him what I had done...so he came back. When he pulled up I told him I was mainly concerned about the rusty screw.

He said "let me see"...I had a paper towel in my fist.

When I removed it he said..."you are going to ER"

so off we went....I ended getting 6 stitches in the palm of my hand...The cut goes from right under my fingers straight down to the heel of my hand.

They made me tell what I had done to about 5 different people....I told Denny they probably thought it was spousal abuse with a knife...LOL

I have never had any stitches before...so this was a new experience for me...Wasn't bad at all.

That's too bad. Did they give you a tetanus shot? Antibiotics? Take care of that hand.

Congratulations on your seed babies!!! I will be starting my seeds next weekend as over the years, based on the kooky weather, I have worked on trying to find the best time to start seeds so that the plants would be at the right size to plant out when the temps have warmed up for summer (I usually try to get them out on or before Memorial Day). I know last year I was a bit late getting started (did it around the 2nd week of April) and the year before, I was about a week too early (starting them around the 3rd week of March, where they were really overgrown before I got chance to plant them out near the end of May). So this year, I'm aiming for the last week of March/first week of April. I have red hot pokers that I started from seed last year and overwintered outside this past winter, and they still have a few green leaves (they form bulbs). I'm hoping they are okay (I kept them mostly dry or barely moist through winter). Am crossing fingers for them! I want to start some scarlet runner beans because they did wonderfully last year and my hummers loved them! Also plan to start some tomatoes, but I'm trying to decide which ones to do this year from seeds that I have from last year.

Thanks, it is really exiciting, I am thinking I need more hoyas....lol. They are pretty hard to find around here, so I have been looking for others with hoyas so I can get a clipping, I found one woman who is going to send me a couple. I love them, they are such beautiful plants, and the flowers are breathtaking. I cant stop smelling it....lol Tracy

The leaves look almost like the pictures someone just posted a couple weeks ago....lighter green marbled like.....I have never seen anything like that before. I hope it's something else. Thanks, Ken. I'll keep an eye on them. I have sprayed all my Sedum with Pyola. They were/are severely infected with aphids....another unprecedent event in my yard. :-(

Like anoriginal says, the bugs were already there. The female weevil lays eggs in the wheat kernel and it can sometimes survive the milling process. The eggs will hatch if they’re in warm or humid conditions, or have reached their maturity. The flour bugs eat the grain and then seek to mate… while eating more grain. How do these pests get into our food? Occasionally, some may find their way inside from outdoors; however, the majority of these pests are in food products brought into the home. The initial infestation can originate at the processing plant, the warehouse, the delivery vehicle, or the retail store (chances of becoming infested increase the longer a food item is stored at the same location). Beetles and moths have four stages in their development: egg, larva, pupa and adult. All stages may be present in the food, but the eggs are so tiny they are seldom seen. The larval stage is most destructive, but the adult stage is most often seen. DOES FLOUR GO BAD? The short answer: Yes. The long answer: The more processed the flour is, the longer it takes to go bad. Whole grain flours should be kept in a refrigerator for the short term, about 2-5 days. If you need to store whole grain flour for longer than a handful of days, the freezer is the best place. If the flour will be used within a month or two, it should be kept in a sealed container. One to two months is considered “quick” in terms of flour usage, so you can keep your flour in a container that is NOT sealed (i.e. the same thick paper bag, rolled down) but the chances of the flour going rancid increase. If the flour will not be completely consumed within two months, it should be stored in a sealed container. Freeze newly purchased grains and flour for at least three days to kill any eggs. Some sources recommend freezing for up to one week. (Note that freezing will kill the eggs, but not remove them.) As a general guideline, don’t buy more grain than you will use within four months. Store grain in a tightly sealed container, not a bag. Weevils are HUNGRY little devils and can eat through bags. (See my storage recommendations above). Adding whole bay leaves and garlic cloves to the area seems to deter flour bugs from setting up shop in your pantry. Garlic may leave a trace flavor in your baked goods, so if you don’t want that, go for the bay leaves instead. You can also apply tea tree oil to a few cotton balls and place them throughout the pantry. WILL EATING BEETLES HARM ME? Other than give you the heebie jeebies, they’re harmless. In fact, the heat from baking kills the eggs and any beetles that may have made their way into your batter. So while the odds of us eating weevils – or have eaten weevils in the past – are high, the mortality rate is low.

I was just going to ask about the tetnus shot, too, since she didn't mention it.

My daughter bruises easily and several times the doctor has questioned her about the bruises when she goes to him.

3 stitches in my left knee from a brick wall...I swear it jumped out in front of me.

5 stitches in my left arm, near the elbow, from a set of metal bleachers. Had to get a tetnus shot for that one.

Just keep 'em cleaned, antibiotic gel, and dry.

Yes...I got a tetnus shot...but she said it was a tiny needle...I didn't even feel it.

thanks for the good wishes...

The numb has worn off and it is kind of burning...doesn't feel too bad. I have a real high pain tollerance.

Patti, please don't try to keep up with me. LOL. I got a tetanus shot last week, when I cut my arm. Then my doctor gave me a pneumovac shot this week when I saw her. So now I am supposed to be protected from pneumonia.

I hope you heal quickly! Poor thing! I have had stitches several times. I almost cut a toe off in grade school and they had to put tons of stitches in it... but no worries, I got a shake for it afterwards!

My goodness!! Sure glad you went to the ER tho, sounds like it was nasty! Hope you heal really, really quick!

Ouch! Good thing you went to ER and got a tetanus shot. I got mine updated this year because of my garden work. I hope you heal quickly.

Patti, the tetnus shots you get in the ER uaully only last 5 or less years. They are not at good as the TD or TDaP shots you get at your MD or the health department. You need to find out if you got a tetnus, TD, or TDap. Let your MD know which on so you can get the correct ones whent he time comes. (the P in the TDaP is protection against whooping cough, it is on the ride in adults).
