You have my sympathy- I've done that twice! (Finally got a kettle with a whistle after that.) First, it helps to move the offending melted thing and affected burner (as much as is removable) outside. Even if it's cooled off, it can still be the source of much stink. Also, you're going to need more airflow than just opening windows. (Especially if it's not so warm out yet where you are!) Try to not open all of them so much as strategic ones that make air flow in a direction. For instance, I have windows on three walls of the kitchen... if I open the windows that face each other, I get a good cross-wind that takes smoke out with it. If I open the middle window, the air just swirls around inside the kitchen. (Alternatively, to get the whole 1st floor I open just the middle window and then all the windows in the living room down the hall.) If you have a set-up anything like this try to find a combination that makes a breeze you can feel. Next, you'll find fans really helpful, even if you have to borrow/rent them. Point at least one out a window to exhaust what's in the house. Keep fans in any opposite windows blowing in, to keep the cross-flow exchange of air going strong. Run the bathroom fan if you've got one, even. Finally, if there's a corner of the house not infected with smell yet, close it off! Tack up a heavy blanket if there are no doors, and towel under doors if you need to. Try to keep the smell confined to the kitchen so you can go to sleep without being sick tonight. This method has cleared the worst of it out of my house after a few hours, and it was totally dissipated by the next day. (We shut the fans and most windows over night, for heat.) It may take some time... just keep as much ventalation as possible for as long as it takes. And if it's seriously making you sick or dizzy, get out of the house for a while! (This applies to pets, too!) If it's still really bad later and you have the option, don't sleep there. Depending on what exactly burned, the fumes can be harmful if you breathe too much of them. You might want to try Oxyclean. I soaked my son's football uniform in it. After washing it twice with a presoak it still stank (he wasn't very good about bringing it home for washing) but the Oxyclean got the smell out. You can put a couple of scoops right on top of the clothes, just use the warmest water that is safe for the fabric.

Actually, I was just looking some of this up the other day. The smell can develop over time due to deterioration. Here's the text and link to the site that was describing this: ...it has to developed a very noticeable pungent odor. It seems to permeate the entire carpet and come may possibly come from the backing. We have only had it spot cleaned by a professional to clean up dog messes. The odor was there before that occurred. Unfortunately, what you're smelling is the latex glue that was used to put together your tufted rug. Over time, the glue of these rugs begins to break down and smell. It is not something that will come out, as it has to do with the rug's age and generally gets worse with time. I wish I had better news. Being in the cleaning business, this is a problem that comes up all the time, and believe me, if there were a fix, we'd have found it by now. The shorter lifespan of the hand-tufted rugs is the reason why I suggest that our customers only purchase hand-knotted rugs and sometimes machine-made if those are out of the budget. Try "Nature's Miracle". You can buy large bottles of it, maybe even a formula for washing machines. The last time I was in Pet Surplus I saw a line of Nature's Miracle products on the shelf but didn't really check them out. I know the liquid worked wonders on my comforter after the stray tom cat peed on it. And it is stuffed with wool! I put some in a spray bottle and soaked the stain with it. Then I left the comforter to air dry, the smell went away but some of the yellow stain remained. So I just left it draped over a chair in the bedroom ever since, and this has been a couple months ago. I wasn't taking any chances by folding it up and putting it away in the armoir until ALL the odor was gone. Even better would be to hang it out in the sun all day - if we ever get any sun.
