Anyone know why a horse

Does anyone know why horses wear those blinders?

There are two elderly horses; one white and brown that we drive by alot and today I noticed the brown horse was wearing a blinder.

I wondered as I have seen other horses standing there with this blinder one and what is the reason for it?

Also why do they put those coats on horses, I see some wearing them and wondered why?

Like a hood? On a horse in a pasture? To keep flies off. They can see thru the material. Same for coats.

Blinders on a horse in harness is to prevent distractions from the side field of vision

Usually blinders are used for cart or wagon horses and things of that nature to help the horse keep his eye on where he is going, not his surroundings.

I wonder if you aren't meaning mesh hoods that are used to keep insect off their faces.

Thanks for the comments. I do have a VS/4 x 160 pump. It does not have the SRVS feature. I did try to use the reset button and it did not have any effect on the shutting off and on. Was in pool today and it was still shutting off and on about every thirty minutes. Again it was doing it on low speed, on cleaning speed and with the Magic Stream running. It does seem to be an Easy touch issue, as when it shuts off the red light on the pump does not come on. And right before it comes back on you can hear a click in the Easy touch panel for the pump to come on. The funny thing about the click is that the pump is not hooked to the relay in the Easy Touch for power. The pump is controlled by the control wire, but gets power directly from the electrical subpanel right beside the Easy Touch. All my equipment is inside in the back of a garage, so the Easy touch is located right beside my electrical sub panel for the entire garage. If anyone knows if wiring the pump to the subpanel and controling from Easy touch would be an issue let me know. Everything works fine other than the cutting off and on issue. HORSE RACE GAME GAME PLAY INSTRUCTIONS: You will need a deck of cards, pair of dice, and your Horse Race Game Board. First, remove the Aces, Kings, and Jokers. Shuffle and deal out all the cards. Not everyone will necessarily get the same amount of cards. Place all the horses on the starting line. Before the race begins, 4 horses must be scratched. So that begins with the player to the left of the dealer rolling the dice. The total of the two dice is the horse number scratched, and it is moved back to the first row. For example if the total was nine, then the horse in row nine is moved back to the 5 cent row. Then all players check to see if they have any nines, and pay 5 cents in the pot for every nine they had in their hand. Then the nines are removed and placed to the side. Then the next player to the left rolls the dice for the 2nd scratched horse. The number of that horse is moved two rows back to the 10 cent row, which costs 10 cents per card for anyone with that matching card. This continues two more time for the 15 cent and 20 cent row which will mean that there is now 4 scratched horses. If by chance, a person is rolling the dice, and the dice equals a horse already scratched, then that person puts in the amount of that scratched horse. Which will be 5,10, 15 or 20 cents, then the player passes the dice to the next player. Note: a dice pair roll that is a five and a six = 11 so that is a Jack. And if you roll a pair of sixes = 12 so that is a Queen. The horses that remain on the starting line are now ready for the race. The next player rolls the dice, and that amount, is the horse that moves up one spot. If that amount equals a scratched horse, then that player pays the scratched value of that horse which will be either 5,10,15 or 20 cents depending which row that horse is on. Players keep taking turns until one horse crosses the finish line. (The Last hole at the top of the board. past the red finish line.) The cards in your hand determine the payout of the winnings. If for example the 10th horse wins the race and you have a 10 in your hand, then you would win 25% of the pot. If you have all four 10 s in your hand, then you would win 100% of the pot. No matching cards, no winnings. Once the pot is divided, Then the horses are once again placed at the starting line, then the cards are placed to the next player and shuffled, then the next race can begin again. NOTE: If people don't want to play for money, then use poker chips or some other substitute. 2-10 players can play this game.

MyerMike - I have an Iphone. I can edit, I do see the 3 little dots but I use Safari, not the app. IIRC, someone on here said Safari worked better than the app? The prob. I have (and wonder if you or other apple users have had as well) is that when I type, after the 1st sentence or so, the words start showing up on a delay, like Im typing away but no words showing up on my post but then a few seconds later, ALL the words start showing up quickly, all at once, that I just typed. Really annoying!! Earlier today I tried to respond to a post on here & I got the ”OOPS! This page cannot be found” error msg for about an hour. I think the site went down?

I created a new post this morning with a picture and it never showed up. Is there a delay time between posting and the post showing up? I don't see how eliminating discussions can save them money. it's not like they have to hire anyone extra because there's a rose forum. It's just a few extra bytes in a database. Hard drives are dirt cheap.

The blanket (coat) is to keep the fly's from biting in the summer...I think they have a heavier one in the winter to keep them warm.

the blinders are to keep a horse from getting spooked from thing coming up beside them...

i dont know really anything about horses as they scare the heck out of me..but they have such beutiful eyes. what ive always heard is blinders are worn because they spook easily and there peripheal (sp) vision is great. theres also something else i heard about a horses vision that i cant remember right now. a few people on here have horses i tink that can better answer your questions. wish i could find someone to get me over my fear of horses and learn to ride. and yes ive seen the blankets but up here in ny they wear them in the winter.

Also, I have heard, and anyone can correct me, but, a winter blanket will also help keep a horse from growing a winter coat.

I lived in the tropics when I had horses, so no coats.

We have a hyper quarter horse named Dakota out of the famous Docs Bar quarter horse and she spooks EASILY!!! We must keep blinders on her when she is ridden as she sees everything in her peripherial vision and it spooks her, wheras Jack, our older gelden out of Two Eyed Jack is as calm as can be. Steady, sure. What you call an honest horse. BUT...he would never stand for blinders. He is fine and comfortable without them.

All our horses that are out of Two Eyed Jack are just good honest horses and smart as a whip. We only have one out of Docs Bar...we sold the rest. For the most part our horses are kept in a stable and we have no need for blankets except on rare ocassions. Fly mask is what we use for our horses. This is what it looks like. Is this what you are talking about?

Also, we use ShooFly insecticide for the flies also in Stable. Yep, everyone loves a horse question just like a cat question or dog question. Maybe we just love animal questions and nature questions on this website...That is what brings us all here. (;-)

Yes, I think she really meant the face guards that you put on them to keep flies off of their faces. Blinders are things that are on harness bridles which prevent horses from seeing behind them, and getting spooked by the wagon or cart.

Maybe nervous horses, blinders keep them from seeing things coming from the side. I saw the hoods in Peru and asked what they were for, it was to keep the flies away from their eyes. They were horses pulling carriages and were decorative hoods.

Most horses are gentle beasts and don't do things that would in any way frighten one.

They're also pack beasts and like to be with others ... including people (who treat them well).

Just jumping in a little late. I had a driving pony. When driven with blinders on and he would see something that would scare him, it could have been dangerous if he took the cart for a mad dash to get away. As soon as it was out of sight - he would forget about it. Out of sight - out of mind.
Now with training Banjo to drive, it gets interesting because he cannot see me either! I need to be sure he knows I am there when I am beside him and I keep light on my feet when I am there. He also could walk right off a road into a ditch and not see it. Scary.
Some older horses have eye troubles and need a fly mask to keep them off. Maybe that is what you saw. Or maybe the horses belong to two different owners.

We have a roping horse that is out of Doc Bar. Great horse, but he jumps over little bitty streams. Will swim right through a river, but will haul back and launch across a chalk line....

Flys are really bad this time of year. We don't use any masks unless one has an eye problem.

Often - you will put a blanket on a clean horse if you are taking them to a show, so they stay clean.

Our horses don't get such treatment. If we put a show blanket on - they would probably look at us like "what the..." :)

DD's horse is a roller. You wash him and he goes and rolls in the dirt. Untack him and he rolls in the dirt. He rolls ALL the way over - which - depending on who you talk to is a $100 roll or a $1000 dollar roll - guess it depends on how much your ride is worth.
