Geez, glad he survived but your title said he died! (Electrocuted means death by electricity.) Hope he has a speedy recovery and my best to family and friends. Electricity can be a good servant, but can very easily kill or injure. Many people don't realize this and things can go wrong so quickly and easily, and electricity is not very forgiving.

What type of surgery? Skin grafts or something more?

If he was sweaty, most of the current may have traveled on the surface layer of his skin. That would have protected the vitals, but burns and deadened tissue are serious issues.

The worst shocks usually are those where the current path crosses the heart and or brain regions. Some of the bad paths are 1) hand to hand, 2) hand to head, 3) left hand to right leg, and 4) right hand to left leg.

I've worked on developing electrical devices all my life and near the end of my career, I learned something about eletrical shock that was surprising. One of our technicans got a bad shock on his hand. He was shook up a bit, but wished to continue the days job. The supervising engineer, however, insisted that he go immediately to be checked out.

He had a bad burn on the side of his finger. The doctor cleaned and dressed the spot and then prescribed a series of followups. This is what he told him to expect.

The ruined flesh will die and have to be removed, same as for a poisonous snake bite. The procedure was to wait long enough to detemine how much to remove. But his main concern was the finger bone! He said that if the bone had been killed, it would have to be removed. Our tech was in danger of loosing his finger, and that would happen weeks after the accident.

Fortunately for our tech, he got off with a minimal wound. Most of the current had traveled on the surface of his body.

Unusual fact: GFI circuit breakers are set to trip at 5 milliamps leakage or less, a thresehold of safety for humans. However, this amount can kill a cow! Electric fence makers have to restrict their shock currents to lesser levels. The usual shock path for a cow is from the nose or head to the front feet.

I hope that you friend fares well. My thought is he has had 'burns' that were serious enough kill some flesh.

Definitly sending prayers. My DH is an industrial electrician, so I know this can be BAD!

How awful, of course I said a prayer for this young man. I sincerely hope he will heal well and quickly.

He's still alive, and his family must be so relieved but worried about his recovery. I hope he recovers fully, but I suspect it will not be easy. Keep us posted. Heartfelt prayers for him and his family.

Oh, that's such a traumatic injury. My husband works for the electric company, and sadly one of their guys lost both hands in an accident when his bucket truck jumped and he grabbed the wire in front of him. You may have seen a show on it on the history channel.

Hope the results are far, far better for your friend. Good luck and a speedy recovery to him.

This happened to a young man we went to church with and he lost almost all his fingers and toes. It was awful, but he did live through it. Terrible tragedy. Let us know how he does.

Taigen, I have found that the best way to handle it, is to try not to even think about it. If I thought about the dangers DH was exposed to as an industrial electrician for the last 30 years, I would be a basket case.

Cynic: electrocution can also mean "injury" by electrical shock.

My dh is a journeyman lineman & has spent a career with electricity. I agree with Tammy... just put it out of your mind, Taigen. Your ds is learning the "right way" to handle electric. Accidents can happen in *any* field, or when we cross the street. There are lots of career opportunities in the field and we need new blood for when the old geezers (dh) retires.

Brent is really doing well. He had a skin craft yesterday and it went well. He may need more later. The doctors are really pleased. Our son went to see him Friday and Saturday and he was so bored so he left him his laptop. Our son and Brent have been like brothers.. I talked with Brent's dad just a while ago and he said it saved him a bunch. He is emailing away. He is suppose to be able to come home tomorrow.

I am gathering up a bunch of grocery items to take over for them. I have tons of cleaning supplies and such on hand. They have 4 young kids and I know they will be grateful. I know they would all help us if the need was there..

Susie, so glad to hear your friends son is doing well. I would say he's not finished with what he was meant to do while on earth. What a sweet son you have to leave him his laptop. I know how much the young, and heck all of us, depend on the link, so to give it up to a friend says allot about him.

DH and DS both have risky jobs, and Tami is right, you just cannot think about it. Just know they are professionals with good training and trust them to take care of themselves. If a person worries every day, that would not be a good life.

Our son, Scott, worked for Brent's Dad while in high school. He and Brent became best buds. They both felt like they were the brothers that neither of them had. They became very close. They have always tried to talk a couple times a week. Brent's Mom and Dad both are thilled the guys have had each other all these years.. We are, too.

justgotabme, I think you are right when you say his work here is not done.. He is a great kid and such a hard worker. He and his wife work side by side in raising their 4 kids. I am sure they will always feel they have been blessed in so many ways from now on. And yes, someone was watching out for him last Tuesday

I'm not beating the horse either, and while people commonly think it always means fatal but there are sources that define electrocute: injure OR kill someone by electric shock, to wit: my computer's dictionary ap, Google dictionary, and Wiki dictionary. I verified with dh that in his trade that a person who has been electrocuted, may or may not have survived the event. So, I am sure that's how the family was told of the accident & why it has been reported to others using the term "electrocuted".

Wiki itself states that the use the term to indicate shock or injury is technically incorrect. It merely mentions that some people misuse it that way. So just because a group of people don't understand the roots of the word doesn't make those of us who do wrong to jump to the conclusion that the word means what it does.

He's home and thrilled to be there. He is doing well and looking forward to wonderful days ahead...
