I also would expect an immune response (from very weak to complete immunity) to rose rosette virus which would vary in effectiveness depending on which variety, possibly temperature, possibly general health of the plant, possibly time in growing season, and other still unknown factors. We do know of three examples of unexpected behavior. One is that graft transfers of the virus in multiflora are not successful after a certain date. A second is for one species of rose the virus can go down one cane but does not go up other canes. A third is that 20% or in some cases more of infected roses appear to cure themselve (go into remission) but then the disease returns (have a relapse). "Q: Is the virus present in non-symptomatic tissue [on plants known to have been symptomatic]? It can be. We have seen about 20 percent of newly symptomatic roses, lose all trace of symptoms. However, the symptoms always return and usually cover most of the plant. The 2012 review article for which I have included the quote below may be of interest. "Plants, however, lack specialized mobile immune cells. Instead, every plant cell is thought to be capable of launching an effective immune response. So how do plants achieve specific, self-tolerant immunity and establish immune memory? Recent developments point towards a multilayered plant innate immune system comprised of self-surveillance, systemic signalling and chromosomal changes that together establish effective immunity." I think the cab fare from JFK is $45. DH and I took a shuttle for $15 each (from Newark) but it took a long time and the driver got lost in China Town and Little Italy looking for a very small hotel on a side street. It took a long time to get to Manhattan but the price was right. I checked JFK website and found lots of info on getting from the airport to Manhattan. I think the cab fare is set by the city of New York. I took the airport train and then transferred to the subway to go to 59th St. near Columbus Circle in Manhattan last time I went but DS was my tour guide. I think it is doable. I found people to be really helpful when I was there. If you take a bus, have exact change in quarters.....we learned that the hard way when I was there with DH. Have a great trip.!

Hey Silvia, so nice to hear from you again,..Happy New Year to you as well ! Glad to hear that you also love New York City. Just curious, when you mentioned you had a small garden there, the garden was not in Manhattan, right ? :o) The only people who had a personal garden on Manhattan in my day were multi millionaires who had a small raised bed on the roof of their zillion $ skyscraper downtown. LOL We middle class guys lived on the Upper West Side, and then my family ended up in the far north neighborhood of Inwood, looking across the East River at the Bronx. The Dyckmann House was only a couple of blocks away,..the oldest Dutch home on Manhattan ( circa 1660 ),..amazing to gaze at the rooms & 1/4 acre lot still surrounding it. We do have much in common, I too love NYC and since retiring 20 yrs ago I have collected and read 20 + books, almost half of them centering around that city and the interesting people who lived there. I don't go back anymore however, no more relatives left up there, - but still love to read about it's history, and that of course includes Long Island,...plenty of gardens out there !
