Got figs?? I do, yea! How do you eat them?

Friend's tree was full, so she picked me a bunch and brought me some, as a FEEL GOOD gift.. She knows I love figs.

At pool we were eating them, and throwing the stems in the bushes.

Our instructor, today, had never had a fig in her young life. Wow!

Gonna make a simple syrup and put mine in it. They last a while that way.

How do you eat them?

Right off the tree with a quick rinse of water!
I also like them after being refridgerated.

I like then rinsed and refrigerated before eating. You are very lucky! Yum!

On my last trip to Sicily (October 1996), I ate as many figs as I wanted as all my relatives had gardens with various fig trees and at each visit I would greet my hosts and drift away into the garden, only to return with a tummy full of figs. This was great HOWEVER, know that fresh figs are a natural laxative ...nuff said about that. In South Florida we get the occasional fig that the birds miss, the actual fig pigout happens when Publix supermarkets bring in the fresh figs from california, usually they'll have calimyrna, BT, black mission, kadota. I get enough for a couple of serious 'stuff your face full of figs' sessions and that will last for a while. Then as Christmas nears, my family will make cookies with dried figs and chocolate. I occasionally take a roll of dried figs with me to work and pick on from time to time... How many figs is enough? I could probably survive on fresh figs and dates and water...

Well, we're back from our cruise and I tasted my first fig in Sorrento Italy. Someone told me that only the green/yellow would be available at this time of year and they were right. I went to a fruit stand and felt a few to see if they were soft and the owner said "pleasa donta squeeza da fruit." So just to show that Americans are sympathetic to their concerns, I bought the two I squeezed. My husband laughed when I told him what the man said to me because he used to sing a song "Pleasa donta squeeza da banana" about Riley the Cop squeezing the bananas at Tony's fruit stand. He said that must have been Tony (that's my husbands name too)! So we had a good laugh and I took them and washed them and had my first fig. Unfortunately, the first was pretty bland. The second which had a yellow spot on it (instead of being all green) was a little sweeter and a little pinker on the inside. Better than the first, but still didn't knock my socks off. Although they were soft, I have a feeling they weren't at their peak of ripeness. When I got home, my first fig tree dropped it's first ripe fig on the ground, and the ants were enjoying it. Oh well, it's a Celeste and it's fruiting out of season, I now have 13 new figlets and counting. The one that fell looked nice and juicy and very dark pink on the inside. Fire ants make mounds and not holes. The mounds start out small and become larger as the colony population increases. These mounds look rather innocent until you disturb them, and ALL of the ants boil out of the mound all at once. Again, there is never a discernible hole. I never worry about ants in my yard and garden, other than fire ants. Fire ants can be a problem for humans, pets, bird nests, beneficial insect eggs and larvae, and such.

A couple years after the article Sharon posted was published. This was published. I can’t link to it since I am searching for these articles through my workplace at Caltech, and you would get a broken link, but here is abstract copied below. It seems that an important consideration for a banker plant used to host the predator mites is “tuft domatia”, which are little chambers on the leaves that are meant to house the beneficials. The plants provide little hidey-houses along with pollen :-) The predator mite Amblyseius swirskii is an omnivore, eating both pollen and other mites, thrips, whitefly etc. Selecting an ornamental pepper banker plant for Amblyseius swirskii in floriculture crops. By: Avery, PB et al. Abstract: Preference of phytoseiid mite, Amblyseius swirskii (Athias-Henriot) was assessed on four cultivars of ornamental pepper banker plant candidates; Red Missile (RM), Masquerade (MA), Explosive Ember (EE) and Black Pearl (BP) for potential control of pestiferous insects in floriculture. Significant differences in cultivar preference by A. swirskii was observed in choice experiments whether the test was pre- (with pollen) or during bloom. Overall, female mites laid more eggs when pollen was provided as a food source. The number of tuft domatia per cultivar leaf appeared to positively influence host preference in the choice plant tests pre-bloom. In addition, cultivar RM had the highest mean number +/- A SEM of tuft domatia per leaf (5.1 +/- A 0.3) and motiles per plant (4.0 +/- A 1.2), followed by MA, EE and BP. In choice tests on blooming plants, A. swirskii showed preference for both cultivars RM and MA compared to EE. These experiments indicated that the number of tuft domatia and availability of pollen can influence the host preference of A. swirskii for an ornamental pepper banker plant cultivar. Results from this study will help growers, researchers, educators and extension personnel in understanding the plant phenology promoting adoption of suitable banker plants for managing greenhouse and landscape insect pests.

I love them fresh off the tree. I've never seen them in stores here, but wish I could get them. My son's girlfriend brought me some from her grandmother's tree this year and they were so good.

Are they gritty like in fig newtons? That's the only way I've eaten them and I just can't stand the texture.

This is a canape recipe I think would be wonderful!

Prosciutto and Caramelized Fig Tidbits

Recipe ingredients

-2 Tbsp. (30 mL) butter*
-3 fresh figs, cut into 8 wedges each
-Small amount of sugar
-3 Tbsp. (45 mL) extra virgin olive oil**
-1 Tbsp. (15 mL) Modena balsamic vinegar*
-8 slices prosciutto*, cut lengthwise into 3 strips
-Watercress as needed
-Salt and pepper to taste

Preparation

In a skillet, melt butter over low heat. Add figs and sprinkle with sugar.

Cook about 1 minute per side to caramelize. Remove from heat.

Whisk olive oil and balsamic vinegar together, season and set aside.

Lay a piece of fig and some watercress on a strip of prosciutto and roll up. Repeat.

Sprinkle a few drops of dressing on each tidbit and serve immediately.

Oh, I planted a fig tree years and years
back and that tree almost took over the side of our yard. It kept having baby trees!! I had so many figs and gave out of people to give them to. We were on fig burn out. We finally chopped it down and had some men back hoe the roots to get them all out. That tree was persistent. For awhile it still gave off spouts from roots that were missed from the back hoe somehow. We finally got some killer that left the soil infertile for 7 years. Nothing is growing in that area yet,not even a weed! It has been about 8 years now. LOL Please enjoy your figs though. I just had too many. LOL. I just wish my nectarine tree would be so productive. Now that I could handle.(:-)

I buy the dried turkish figs. Be careful I had the TROTS
from the figs pick off a friends tree,ate to many and psid
dearly! LOL!!!

Oh, what I wouldn't give for some fresh figs! Haven't had any for years. Never see them for sale anywhere here. I have bought them in jars at grocery stores, but they are not good like fresh.
