My parents are in the hospital...

They think is is food poisoning. They were admitted last night (they got sick the day before). my dad should come home tomorrow (Sunday)- they are keeping him tonight because his potassium is still low. My mom has had a harder time- she has been puking and pooping until late afternoon. We expect they will keep her until Monday. Luckily, my aunt and sister-in-law are able to stay most of the time/overnight to help out. My nieces went up to see them today and were then shipped off to their other grandparents for a few days.

Not sure what they ate, it may have been something at my Granny's a few days ago (Granny is having a hard time with that idea). They also may have eaten some bad tomatoes from their garden. Apparently, the tomatoes had a couple of bad spots that they just cut around and they should not have done that.?>

I am feeling a little helpless being so far away (700 miles) but they keep telling me that I do not need to head to Atlanta.

Sorry I got here late - but it's nice to see Lee posting again, although sadly under a tragic circumstance. Your parents should not be out any money because of this accident - there is clearly someone else at fault, and the attorney should be able to take care of that for you. Your father is lucky that the driver was caught - so many times these accidents are hit and run with no witnesses, and that would have been even more tragic. I think you are good at keeping a positive attitude, as are your parents, and that is always a help. My thoughts remain with your family for a speedy recovery. Lars

Yes, feeling a little low tonight as I think of my brother Michael. Taken away from us many years ago now, but still very present. He was hit by a drunken driver on his way home after work. The driver ran away immediately afterwards. Saw an old picture a couple of days ago and it only just dawned on me the impact this had on the whole family. In the picture, I felt we were a whole family that had never experienced any major grief. Life was good in our middle class lives. The person that fatally hit my brother was taken to court and we were award a small amount of money. He laughed when he was aloud to go free. He was the top tax man in the South West of Avon in the UK. Free mason and so they do take care of their own there. I knew nothing about this organisation when my father spoke of it, but being a Policeman my father and his colleagues knew who they were. My father was so disillusioned with this experience he retired early and moved to NZ where we still are. The happiness of family life never returned. My father stayed out working for most of the time and we the family felt abandoned in a new country actually living in a isolated spot with no transport. From being surrounded with family and friends from childhood security was always there. The locals seemed quite hostile to us being from the mother country, this is almost no existent now due to the number of Poms now living here. When I was older, I returned to the homeland to meet some of the Police who convinced me of the strength of Freemasons and their influence. I have been offered a couple of times here, but politely refused. Going back to the picture, the loss of my brother, the grief feels so overwhelming. I ask for prayer to help me to sleep, I will indeed pray. My brother was training to join the Household Cavalry. He was officer material the Sargent had said and we were all so proud of him. The man that killed him had gone back to the pub that night and created a cover story in case the police found him. Apologies for jumping like this, just not feeling too happy, and this feels like a good outlet. It has been a long time since anyone wrote on here, but just releasing some of the pain into cyber space just may be a good outlet for me right now. It is 1am in the morning and I must go to bed soon. The horror and grief this person has put us through. Never an apology, even by letter ;o(. Little things the number of my brothers private gun 19, his number 24499694. Memorised since the age of 12 years, I am now 46. The picture has him wearing his favourite jumper and the watch received on Christmas day - he was wearing both of these on the day he was taken from us. They obviously looked very different following this incident. My father once told me, that my brother apparently made a lot of noise - maybe not the best thing to know. We were not there for him, we were warm tucked away in our beds, whilst he suffered in agony. Can you hear my pain? Hey Cindy: Reading your story is very touching. I think we are kindred spirits. I lost my mom when i was only a few months old. My dad and his parents raised me. My grandfather died when i was 6. so my young life was spent with my dad and his mom- my mee mee. Unfortunately, my mee mee died in January 2008. a week after her funeral, my dad was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer, multiple myeloma. I was shattered. I spent the last almost three years taking care of my dad, going through the ups and downs of the chemo and bone marrow transplant working and than failing and working than failing, than ultimately finding there was no longer any hope. The last week of October, we found out the cancer had spread and the chemo stopped working. my dad went on hospic and i devoted three weeks of taking care of him nonstop with my stepmom and my older stepsister. November 23rd, 2010, a day before my 26th birthday and 2 before thanksgiving, my daddy passed away. This has been the most horrible time of my life. my dad remarried only when i wasx 19 and i do not have any blood siblings. my moms family hasnt been in my life that much but we are building a relationship presently. my dad has one brother living and his wife who have been consistently in my life since i was born. my uncle has stepchildren but no children of his own. my family is dwindling. my dad and i were EXTREMELY close. he and i finished eachothers sentances, laughed at things only we understood, and spent a lot of time together. in many ways, our lives were connected and one. He was my dad, my best friend, my hero, my protector, my everything. I played umbrella by rihanna for my dad and even made a video on the computer of pictures of he and i to that song during his bout with this cancer. I listen to that song today and it makes me both hurt and smile. I am just like you, trying to find my place in life, trying to find a way to live in a world without my daddy, without my parents, without a real home. I am too sad that my wonderful daddy will never get to be a part of his future grandchildrens' lives. I hurt for him, hurt for myself, and hurt for the children i will have. whether its been two weeks or nine months or forever ago that we lose our parents, it feels deep and fresh. its an incredible feeling of despair to be a young adult and an orphan. please feel free to email me: rachelen@aol.com. It does sound a little like a tempest in a teapot, but what caught my eye is that your mother says he's 'cheap'. Not having money is one thing, but being cheap is a lot worse. It means that you'll never have anything that's more than the bare basic need; no matter how much money you or he makes, no matter how much you have in the bank, you won't have a nice home when a crummy apartment will suffice. (I once knew a guy whose children never learned to ride bicycles because their neighborhood was unsafe; the family lived in that particular house because the home that they owned in a nicer area was leased out... because it brought in more rent!) Years ago, I learned to 'rate' guys by the tip they left when we ate out. A person who won't give a nice tip to a waitress or waiter won't spend more than he absolutely has to on you either. I just got back from a week in Las Vegas and two of the gals I went with got very, very ill. Oddly enough, they shared lunch - a tomato and cheese salad. I can't believe they've said tomatoes are "clear" to eat. People are still getting sick... Hope your folks are better soon.

Rotten tomatoes - oooh I remember my oldest brother being very sick from drinking bad tomato juice. I was a child and thought he was dying.

I am so sorry hearing this. Food poisoning is the worst! I have had it three times. Once at a restaurant, once at a school, and once it was my grandmother.... oh shoot, I had it four times.... also once at the restaurant that I was working at. Gosh not fun at all. Hoping they are feeling better really soon!

Yuck! You do feel like you are dying....but few do! Tomatoes from the garden do not have the threat of ones you buy in the store. I bet the tomatoes had nothing to do with the illness. Maybe some potato salad left out too long or something like that but I bet not home grown tomatoes. Sending prayers they get well soon!

I hope they're lots better real soon, Janie. I've had it once and it was miserable for about 4 days, but they'll survive this and have a story to tell for ages.

It could have been anything they both ate, poor Grandma, she must be worried sick, no pun intended.

My granny used a dish rag to wipe the counters and they had backed chicken last that day. We are wondering if there might be some cross contamination and then they are the tomato with "spots" and it sent them over the edge, belly wise. Two other people got belly aches from the chicken dinner but not as sick as my parents (total of 8 people at that meal).

Thanks for the well wishes. Talked to my mom a little while ago and she is "out of it". Poor thing is still having bouts of puke and poop.

My parents are across the hall from each other at the hospital (it doesn't have double rooms). My dad will holler across the hall when he wants something since my mom is sicker and needs the visitors to help with clean-up (as usual, hospital staff are over worked and have too may patients, especially for the number of times she is getting sick).

When I talked to my dad, he mentioned he wanted to brush his teeth but didn't want to bother the nurse or anyone else. I got him to get my sister-in-law to the phone (she was across the hall so he was hollering, LOL). She went to the nurse's station and got him a brush and toothpaste. That was the extent of my helping but at least his teeth should not feel so "fuzzy" now!

I just now read your post. I do hope, both are feeling lots better. I know, about helpless feeling, my family lives across the ocean (Atlantic). There was never anything I could do... and over 30+years I got used to it. But it still doesn't feel good.

Janie, I hope it was a better night for them and they will get home today.
Dish clothes and kitchen sponges are the worst for harbouring stuff - you can sanitize these items by placing them in a bowl with some water and microwaving for a minute. They come out smelling fresh and all bad bacteria is killed.
Maybe you could mention this to your gran by working it into a conversation (so you don't offend her) that you heard about it and tried it?
It's hard being far away - I hope you can talk to them today.

Oh gosh!
DH had food poisioning once from a chicken burger he ate out. Chicken is the worst of the two IMO but could have been a combination....whatever it was I hope they are soon feeling better and home recouperating!
