You have my sympathy. I hope it stays fixed a long time.

Last week I took my car for an oil change and walked out the door with a $700 charge. It needed this, that, and the other.

we can exchange sympathy cards. I just paid $3,000
for car repairs and 2 new tires. $2,000 for root canals
and DS tuition is due.

don't even want to know what work we have to do on
the truck. I WAS trying to save for gutters, new
windows and flooring! LOL

Yes, OJ...16 years old.

I feel for you. I am still waiting for my Mini to get out of the repair shop, from the hail damage in May.

It'll cost us 500 bucks to get it, but the insurance will pay a WHOLE lot more.

Sympathy to all! Well...it would be hard to live without a fridge. Our garage fridge is 20 years old and still ticking :-)

The 2 items that fail the most are the thermostat and fans. What failed on yours?

One other nusiance thing is clogging of the drain tube. There is a flexible tube that drains condensate into a pan that sits under the radiator coils. Heat from the coils is supposed to evaporate the condensate. Periodically, the condensate pan should be pulled out and cleaned. When it is shoved back in, check to make sure that the end of the drain tube is not kinked shut.

I had frig problems too. After a few months I started using the little "dorm" frig I had in the garage. And over the winter it was so cold that coolers worked in the garage. Thought I might use the rebate thing but that was mostly a joke. Finally bought one about a month ago. Probably cost less than to repair the old one that was 27-28 years old and not a problem before about a year ago. So I got my money's worth out of it.

But I don't buy Sub-Zero! :) When you spend that much you feel compelled to spend money repairing and it can be more than a modest new one.

But, glad to hear it's working again. Hopefully it'll last a long time. But 16 years isn't too bad - many have problems long before that.

I've never taken warranty plans on appliances, but I do have one on our now-10-year-old GE Monogram fridge/freezer. It's built in, and I don't want to have to go through re-doing all that cabinetry with a replacement if I don't have to.

Last week I used the warranty plan for a repair call. The freezer was staying on its defrost cycle too long.

When the unit was new I inspected the workings for dust twice a year. Never saw any -- until the tech looked up there! He merely needed to vacuum the condenser wall to fix the problem. (Sure was glad I wasn't paying for my stupidity -- sort of like having a tech come and plug your 'broken' toaster into the wall.)

I asked the man about the usual lifespan of a unit like mine. He said most will go for 20+ years, but he sees a lot that need replacing long before that because families are hard on the doors and shelves! I'll go back to searching for dust more often and hope ours will last a long time. (Tech said to suspect dust if the ice cubes start to look misshapen.)

You must have jinxed mine too. I got to the office this morning and the darn thing is making awful, loud, "I'm dying a horrible death" sounds and I can't get it away from the wall by myself to unplug it. *sigh*

The appliance guy is still working on mine, after another problem cropped up. It's a G.E., but we had to special order because of its smaller size; we needed to fit it into the space provided. Yes, a thermostat problem now, after having the circuit board replaced. About five years old. Ridiculous. Are the European models more reliable?

Our problem was thermostat and a lot of little things.
No dust - we know to vaccum, and the little drain tube, all the way in the back on a bottom shelf, was clear.

Ours is also built in, and is only a refrigerator - freezer is a separate unit.

Parts aren't the big cost in Sub zero repair - it's the labor.

Monica - I can sympathize with you. My Sub Zeros (501R and 501F) are now 23 years old. We've have a few of those repairs over the years. I just hope mine keep on cooling for many more years - and yours too.
