I was contacted by a staff member of Tim Horton's Camp for Kids. Tim Horton's is Canada's largest coffee chain. They have 6 camps throughout Canada and one in Kentucky where groups under-priveleged kids each spend 10 days throughout the summer. NOT your ordinary camp!

The decided they wanted to set up a vermicomposting bin for their cafeteria food scraps and teach the kids about it. All about "giving back." The kids are taught not to waste food, and the food waste is composted and the compost is used on their gardens and flowerbeds.

So I was invited to go and do a workshop with them.

I took hubby and he took pictures. We had an absolute ball.

The kids involved with this were 17 and 18. They were the most polite, warmest, friendliest kids we've ever met. Not a bad weed among them, and the majority come from broken homes. They welcomed me and made us feel like part of the family. We were so touched by the organization and what they are doing for these kids. They'll have memories to last them a lifetime.

Thank you for sharing. We love to have soup/sandwitches/AND donuts at Tim Horton. It is great to see businesses like this do such wonderful work with youth.

Boxofrox your photos are so lovely ! I love all of them and think it's so sweet you generously share your blooms with everyone !! Your hydrangeas are spectacular . I have been keeping my eye out for a glowing embers since I saw your photos . Jim , if u catch this , I used to live in pa and the year of 9/11 I was a camp counselor at a camp in shanks ville ! The property was so close to the wreckage , we had to not use certain trails because there were government workers collecting various " artifacts " from the plane , and could be seen there. We didn't want to scare the children . It was quite surreal .

I am curious about how the actual flow rate was measured. Typically, a door opening is utilized as an instrumented flow path. At the door, one could measure by the pressure drop through a calibrated venturi, but in that case there would be a pressure drop and not only would that cut the actual flow rate of the hood, but there would be some house leakage not measured. Alternatively, if there were also a fan in the path keeping the house pressure at zero to the outside, while also measuring the flow through the fan (by whatever means), then the flow rate measured should be the static value for the entire hood system. Of course, without the test fan providing zero differential, the actual flow will be less depending on where the MUA is sourced. No magic is involved. kas Correction: In an early message above, I asserted: "A fan at the hood can more easily overcome flow resistance between the hood and the outdoors, but normally this resistance is small, a few tenths of an inch w.g., so attic and roof mount fans work fine when properly sized." I now doubt that it matters much whether the restriction is before or after the fan, as most fans have fan curves that are based on total pressure drop around the path and do not differentiate between pushing and pulling. Differences could result from turbulence interacting with structures on one side or the other of the fan, and in such cases the actual flow might differ slightly for the same fan. I don't know how VAH squirrel-cage blowers might behave in this respect.

The guitar heros went over just fine. They didn't even use it yesterday, they were into the Wii games. The DD playing got, it for the son who was setting on the sofa on the left. DD's DH's parents have the Wii system and they've always loved playing that at Mammaw and Papaw's, so they got themselves (the kids) one for Christmas. LOL Big kids. Well, SIL and his Dad play golf all the time. DD get hot when she sends DH over to his folks to pick up some folding chairs or something, and it takes 2 hours to go 1 mile and back. I love the picture of my Mom and Lily too. Full circle. Leslie

We learned a lot about the Camp. It is designed for kids who wouldn't financially be able to go. Each coffee shop recommends a boy and girl in their town who would benefit.
The very first camp, years ago was very rustic, camping, etc. Then the Board of Directors at the Foundation suggested making the camp a luxurious, state of the art setting, where they would be treated like guests and live like kings, and have memories that would last forever.

Well! There are greenhouses here, a computer lab, a several thousand dollar observatory with a humongous telescope to see the stars and planets (the roof opens electronically), a climbing wall, archery, volleyball, canoeing, fishing, 4 bunkhouses like the one pictured and gorgeous manicured treed grounds.
More than one kid told me how much they loved it there and one girl is trying to be a Leader there for next year.

Get this, we were invited guests at lunch yesterday. (where the meals are all nutritious, and family style; the kids can eat as much as they want...they never want to see a kid go hungry).

Anyway, the guys in our group had some of the younger boys sitting with them, "so they could teach them to treat women with respect." Some of these kids come from rough homes, and they belittle females. We happened to sit with the girls and the Leader was saying that when she left one of the bunkhouses yesterday the language that came out of one of the young girls, directed at her was pretty rough. So the older ones teach the younger ones that people are to be treated nicely and with respect. How very cool is that.
The older ones we were with, had respect in spades.

Beautiful camp. These immersion tactics do work! Thank you for volunteering with the kids.

May I 'preach' for a moment?

I'd like to see tax dollars go to support *voluntary* boarding schools for underprivileged kids. There would be rules and standards; there would be holidays, but no unsupervised family visitation; slackers would be expelled -- same set up as private boarding schools but without the frills.

My DIL teaches 8th Grade math in the inner city. The schools already feed the kids breakfast, lunch and a take-home snack. School is their only safe place, but the doors are locked at 3 p.m. The vast majority of these kids are un-parented. They go 'home' to a gang shooting gallery. Many can't sleep at night because they live in a day-for-night culture of drugs and poverty. They drop out of school just as their nearly illiterate mothers did and live the only kind of life they know.

Why wouldn't this 'camp' atmosphere succeed as a year 'round school? We'll never change the cycle without doing more for kids.
