Got Our Mattresses Back

Against much of the advice here, I decided to gamble $400 and get our existing pair of extra long twin mattresses refurbished by the maker, Verlo. (We paid them $1900 for these foundations and mattresses in January 2010.)

We slept on our guest room mattresses for ten nights until we got our mattresses back Friday afternoon.

They feel like new -- no sagging in the middle. We shall see how long they last, but it was *try* this for $400 or spend nearly $2K for a new king -- also a gamble. If we hadn't been happy with Verlo quality for 45 years before these mattresses, I wouldn't have gambled -- and won't use them again if these don't hold up (literally)!

Hoping for you a wonderful night's rest and that this was a good investment and that the mattress will hold up a good amount of time.

I have one and I hated it the first three months until we "broke it in" Now I LOVE it. It is so comfortable and I never wake up with any aches and pains. That being said, it is a hot mattress in the summer. It retains your body heat, so I find it hot about halfway thru the night. I find this a huge benefit in the winter when my husband likes to sleep with the room very cold. And once the bed is "heated up" it stays so cozy all night. We love our mattress and would never change it. I also rarely use it in the summer as we have a summer home with a regular mattress. My sister bought a tempurpedic and couldn't get thru the three month test period. She sent back after six weeks and hated it. See if you have a friend and spend the night on a broken in one. Or find a place that will let you exchange it if it doesn't work for you. Different strokes for different folks.

I am sorry, but my point is this flammability standard has been in effect for 15 years or more, even if not required on the federal level. It has been required by many states. Manufacturers of the fabrics and the materials that go into making a sofa or mattress has been using these chemicals to meet the state requirements; particular the California standards. Every individual furniture manufacturer has been meeting these standards because it is almost impossible for them to buy any materials that has not been treated to meet the flammability standards. Even a spring cushion or mattress has some padding and materials that covers the springs, all of which has been treated with chemicals to meet the standard. The cotton industry is one of the first to start using chemicals to meet the standards. Any place you can go purchase a bed or upholstered furniture will tell you everything they sell meets the flammability standards. European standards are even tougher than the North American standards. Their are many ways you can treat fabrics, materials and fillings to meet the standards, and some chemicals are safer than others but most have never really been fully tested for long term safety. What the federal law does here is to keep each state from having their own standards and so suppliers of the industry dont have to worry about but just one standard for everything they sell. I hope even if only a few readers of this form take the time and do the research on whats really going on here and then write or call the CPSC or to their congress person and let them know of their concerns. One way to give consumers a choice is just require manufacturers to put on the law label one of 2 statements, either this product meets the flammability standards or it does not. This will enable suppliers to start offering materials to manufacturers without these potential very harmful chemicals. (get out the blood pressure cuff, you guys...) Didn't the upholsterer offer you samples for the all-important "sit test"? Foam comes in a myriad of qualities and densities. (a search will probably help explain this). The cheap stuff (think Jo Ann's) "softens" pretty quickly because it's pretty cheap and of low/mediocre quality. Really good quality foam that is dense and rated as "firm" won't "soften" appreciably without the passage of a lot of time. You can wrap it in several layers of batting and it won't make much difference. Or it SHOULDN'T. Batting should be used more to soften the LOOK of a stuffed cushion. But if you're looking for a "soft" foam, no amount of batting is going to be the answer to your problem. You might be able to work out some sort of deal with the upholsterer by "trading in" the foam you don't like for something you prefer, but don't count on it. Like bolt goods (fabric cut for an order), once it's cut you own it! (with bolt goods you have the recourse of visible flaws, but ONLY if the flaw is caught before the goods are cut to the customer's order). Foam is horribly expensive now (think oil prices). We just received the latest notice of price increases... 15-20% per sheet (24 or 30"w X 108"l)! and there is shipping on top of that.

Finally able to post here again. Probs with using upper case letters in my user name. Even so when I tried to log on this morn. first few times I was asked to register as a new user then with exactly the same user name and password i was able to log on??? Don't mind being asked to log on in order to post - it happens in a lot of forums - just so long as the bloody log in system works. Re mummsies security alert when visiting this page. If you keep your eye on the status bar as this site loads you will note that we are served data from DoubleClick.com. This company a well known advertising server on the web. Probabaly giving us a dose of tracking cookies to watch our journeys across the net - all the better to serve us ads based on our net preferences. Reasonably harmless but some anti spyware tools (Pest Patrol especially) identify this as spyware and give you a security alert. Can I just suggest a cooling off period whilst things settle down and shelve all talk of setting up alternative sites. Seen this type of thing happen a few times on forums I've belonged to. All these splinter sites do is dilute the available number of posters, split the communities into less functional, viable and interesting sub groups and then usually collapse through lack of interest. Would prefer things as they were but would hate to see this place denuded of some good posters because of the ham fisted efforts at "improvements" by the curent owners. Maybe they'll learn something from this little debacle - I hope so. Larry

Wow, sorry to hear a Verlo mattress did not hold up longer than four years. I am considering one now and it is several hundred dollars more than the one from the big S companies. One thing I like is their guarantee. Glad that worked for you. Would you buy Verlo new again?

Thanks for good vibes! I hope these last for years.

These had not 'officially failed' (only sagged 3/4"), so the 10-year warranty didn't apply. Our backs were sore though, and I thought $200 per mattress was fair.

dedtired -- This is serving as a test of Verlo. If these do not hold up, our 'long engagement' with them will be over. (Bought our first set almost 50 years ago.)

I find the "only" sagged by 3/4" bit to be annoying beyond words.

My MIL had that happen with their bed--the dent in the middle was visible and looked huge. And their backs hurt.

But when you measured it, the sag wasn't "enough."
However, if you laid on them, they sagged more, and it was enough to make the beds painful (which is not just "not good" but is "actively harmful"!)

Hers weren't Verlo, but still...

Maybe the big problem is the king-size bed.

Meanwhile, our queen-size mattress, which wasn't that expensive (Sealy, Serta, someone like that), is 20 years old and doing fine. (I don't know how much it sags, but you don't notice is.) Every now and then we think we "should" get a new mattress, but then we think, "we're comfortable, we're happy, why?"

Thanks, Chisue. This whole business of mattress shopping is a PITA. Even if you think it is comfortable in the store, who knows how it will perform at home. I don't know about others, but I cannot get real comfy on a mattress in a store. I can lie on my back or side but would never curl up the way I do at home, plus after ten minutes or so I start to feel kind of idiotic.

Talley_sue -- We've experienced "The Mattress Police" (our name) to declare some "S-Brand" mattresses a failure. Sagging had begun *immediately*. The store took them back, but charged a restocking fee. (I'd noticed how much lighter these were than the Verlo's we were replacing.)

This was in 2010, when we went back to Verlo and bought the mattresses under discussion here.

These are a pair of extra long twins that we use together under a single king mattress pad. We've had this configuration since our marriage almost 50 years ago. These are double-sided, not the single-sided mattresses available today from most manufacturers. (We'd never be able to flip a single king mattress without help.)
