Sounds like she has a problem with gambling. While you on the other hand just do it for fun. You take your chances on one ticket and let that be the only one. She needs more.

I do that. It's often too difficult to try to figure out if/what you've won by scratching the numbers/symbols.. :)

News Flash: Da Game Is Rigged! (Not that this stopped my DH from feeding a few coins into a slot machine when we cruised!) Still, $10 a week is $520 a year...and pretty soon you'd have a nice wad to buy something real.

When we lived in GA we always bought lottery tickets (not scratch off). We never won much but didn't mind spending the money since it went to education. DD went to 4 years of college on the HOPE scholarship program from the lottery. We got back much more than we ever put in.

I've won small amounts, $3, $25 etc. I would buy one or more tickets and put the rest of the money in a small jar for future tickets. I also put the winning amount in an envelope, as a stash.

We don't smoke, drink wine occasionally, love hanging out at home, don't go to casinos (I find them boring).
We don't go to movies (neither of us like the volume of them), nor do we rent them. We watch our favourite shows online. As I said this is a small, guilty pleasure.

I don't think you need to justify to anyone what you spend your money on, or how much. Pretty presumptuous for a stranger on the internet to tell you how to spend, or save, your money!

jasdip, I agree with the others, I think you're wasting your time and money. The likelihood of winning on a net basis is so close to zero, you can call it zero. Is there a sports team you can follow to get a win-lose thrill? Or, try bridge, start a penny-ante poker group, or scrabble, or whatever. The added benefit of these is that they're social fun as well as competitive.

Angel, the mere sharing of a personal detail on an internet discussion forum invites comments. The best way to avoid getting advice from strangers on such matters is to keep personal information personal, don't you think?

Don't worry, Jasdip; it's all a matter of individual preferences and priorities. Some (I'm thinking many!) would probably say I should be saving up for a cruise rather than a second car, but I'm a car person, not a cruise person. If you get pleasure from buying scratch-off lottery cards, go right ahead. At $6 a week, I don't think you need anyone's advice.

So very funny, Jasdip.That is what I spend each week at the supermarket. But I get $2 or $1 ones.

Side story. Each week I buy my scratch off after doing my grocery shopping. Most times DH is with me. He feels the same as a few of you, that it's a waste of money. One day I just thought to myself, " I just wantto win something in front of this man," as DH stood by rolling his eyes. That was my $100 ticket.
I look at it as entertainment. I save up winning tickets and then cash them in.
Although lately, I haven't been lucky.

My daughter's boyfriend met a man who won the $1000 per weekender life ticket.

Bargain hunting is my guilty pleasure.

You called it straight up in the post title! It is Your guilty pleasure and a quiet inexpensive one at that which could pay off, one never knows and how I wish it would for you! What ever makes you happy! You're the one that worked to make that money you choose how to spend it.
My husband used to buy one from time to time when the pay off was up there. He was pretty lucky he won a few $200 ones and a $500 one and several smaller ones. You just never know, some one wins.

Some people spend $5 or $6 on a coffee or latte from Starbucks every day and think nothing of it, yet give you a hard time because you spend $6 a week on lottery tickets. No one has the right to tell you what you should do with your money. If that's how you want to spend it - go for it!

I do lottery tickets also!! I'll get a few scratchoffs and then a quick pick. It's fun and makes me happy.

I don't do scratch tickets, but it's simply because I am too lazy to read them and find out what I am supposed to do LOL. Scratch it all off? Just parts? Match how many? I just don't have the patience for that kind of commitment.

Lindsey brought up a fantastic point. People regularly drop money on expensive coffees and crap to go with them, which works out to be a lot more money than my $6.
I don't do that either, we love our coffee at home. But if we're coming home late from a gig, we'll go thru a MacDonalds for a coffee, their coffee is good! LOL

Oh, we're also doing the Weekly Savings Plan that was started in the New Year. We've got money ahead, yay!
So we're not depriving ourselves of food or other essentials in order to fulfill my weekly fix.

I'm trying to think of the name for reasoning that seeks to justify something because it's not AS (whatever) as another (whatever) behavior.

(I have pretend-justified trading in a sedan for a sports car because I always clip coupons to save money at the grocery store! LOL)

As in, "it's okay for me to smoke cigarettes, because I look out for my health by watching my weight and taking a walk every day".

Well I buy myself a lottery ticket once a week and a Starbucks everyday. I don't feel guilty about either one my pleasures :)

I don't think you should feel guilty about a few lottery tickets. My husband and I saved all our married life and now we are enjoying some little pleasures (at least I am) lol! I buy myself candy once or twice a week and eat the whole bag when he is in bed. Not that he would say anything, but I enjoy snacking on my own once in a while.

How about this......my nephew, who is in his 50's...and lived with his mommy until she died a few years ago, and then married her best friend...won $160,000 on the lottery. Not sure if it was a scratch off or what....anyway, he bought a new pick up truck for himself and a new Lexus for his wife. They took a trip to Tennessee. Anyway, he ran out of money, so he "hocked" the car at one of those title loan places...like pawning it, I think. Then he didn't have enough money to get it out, and he put up the truck....and lost that too. He is back to living in a rented travel trailer and riding a bicycle. I bet he still plays the lottery though....and probably more than ever.****shaking head****

Dex candy is one of my little pleasures as well. I guess I spend more than I should because really good chocolate is expensive, but I don't do it very often.

Maybe my lottery guilty pleasure will pay off some day and I can buy all the chocolate I want :)

Shoes....you can only wear one pair at a time, but lordy I love shoes!
Guilty disclosure: I *could* wear each pair right around 3 times a year If I rotated. (yes that is near to 130 pair!)
But often wear at least 3-4 pair a day.
Now I have shoes for everything from golf to softball, rodeo to muck, flip-flops to loafers and slippers to stilettos.
I say to each their own....I don't cruise, smoke, drink gamble, or drive expensive cars. But I love my friends that do!

No matter what you do in life for a little pleasure, if you talk about it on the internet there will always be someone around with snide remarks to make about it...if it makes you happy and it puts a smile on your face, go for it... I am sure if it was money you needed for anything important, you would certainly hesitate before spending it...

My DH likes to gamble, he feels like his system works..he once won $500 but he generally loses...Thank goodness he has smarts enough to walk away from the table before he loses very much but he enjoys the playing of the game and if he loses. its just part of playing...He wins a few, loses a few...but he has a good time and thats what counts...

... what troubles me is that many have a short time horizon with money: spend as they go.

But with little provision for funding life if/when they become disabled/retired/whatever.

If you don't boss your money ... more than likely it'll boss you ...

... and often your bossing job is now ... and it's bossing comes later, if you weren't shrewd enough in these days.

Just one more moment, please: few have enjoyed much of a wage increase in recent years ...

... but prices keep going up.

Which means that most of us will have lower effective income next year than this.
