Last day as patti: What's on your Tues menu?

Been a most pleasurable day for me: water zumba for a great workout, lunch with friend at Ashley Mac's for a delicious spinach feta tart, 3 ingredient biscuit that is to die for, a blt salad.

To top the day off friend and I went to see The Lone Ranger.

Enjoyed being patti for a while and thank you for responding.

Thanks and please share what you'll be having for dinner this beautiful summer afternoon.

I have some catfish fillets that I will put a little panko on and pan cook, cukes and tomatoes, and cauliflower.

Gazpacho! Made a big batch and have it chilling right now. Don't know what I'll have with it. Maybe a little goat cheese and some Ezekiel bread. Having a glass of Pinot Grigio as I contemplate.

Oh, this is great fun! I had no idea this thread would inspire the Irish in everyone. When I was a wee lad, my Irish grandmother would always make a big deal of having me sow the peas. They were like 20 cents a pack back then, and she had a patch of dirt about 3'x3' in the back of her little rowhouse in Port Richmond, Philly. "Push them in, push them in," she'd say and I'd push them in. Then she'd sprinkle them with holy water, say a quick prayer, and feed me breakfast. We always did it first thing in the morning. They grew on a little fence that doubled as space for her morning glories later n the spring. We never had enough for more than a meal (she shelled them--no snap peas back then), but the fact that the seeds actually looked like little shriveled peas and made "real ones" when they grew fascinated me to no end. Last Fall, I planted some sugar snaps in an earthbox just to test them. They grew like crazy and the cooler it got here, the more they produced. In the box, I just made a shallow trench (maybe 1/2" deep) and placed them in a row spaced about an inch apart. I didn't harvest any because I ate them all right off the vines. So, from my experience, I would say you can definitely grow them in containers. I plan to direct-sow on the 17th. I use square foot gardening in raised beds, so I'm building trellises on two of the beds and placing nylon trellis on them. I'm doing Sugar Snap and Sugar Ann, four squares of each. I'll plant in a trench again, maybe 10-12 in each square. I have some row covers, so I'm thinking I'll peg that down until they get a good start. I understand that many folks start peas indoors and transplant them out and have great success. The key to tat seems to be just giving them a 2-3 week head start. I've never WS'd them, but may just do a bottle or two to test that approach out, and maybe fill in any gaps in the trench. You know what? Even if you can't see the ground for the snow and it's frozen solid, place a seed in a cup and toast St. Patty. It's all about the fun of tradition. As for the stew recipe, I'll post in in conversations. My grandmother, Maggie, would be pleased.

My family, for generations back, begins the New Year with black-eyed peas with hog jowl or any cheap cut of pork (these are seasonings, not a main meat ), collard greens, and usually cornbread. I must add the vinegar sauce from a bottle of Trappey's Hot Peppers in Vinegar! Mom is upset that I cannot find old-fashioned hog jowls here. I use ham hocks instead, and I picked up a small smoked pork chop to add to Wes' plate. I forget to get fresh collards or kale last week while in town so I have to do with what the small convenience store here had on hand - frozen whole leaf spinach. It's a leafy green so it will do, and Wes loves spinach. I cooked my peas and ham hock yesterday. I added onions, garlic, diced green peppers, and diced tomatoes to the pot. To help reduce some of the fat I slow simmer the ham hock separately the day before, let it cool overnight, and remove the solidified fat before finely chopping the hock to add to the peas. At least it gives me an illusion of almost healthy! We'll have a small bowl of the flavorful peas for lunch with a side of spinach. We're going to the neighbors' for supper; I don't know what they'll be having, but I know it will be good. When I first got here I couldn't find "Trappey's Hot Peppers in Vinegar" anywhere. I was distraught! I moaned to my mom and to my best friend that I could never enjoy any type of greens, beans, or peas without Trappey's. That Christmas I received a box from Mom with six bottles in it. My friend also sent me six bottles. I was in pepper sauce Heaven and used every drop of every bottle. The commissary now carries it, and I try to always have three bottles in the house. When a bottle gets low on the vinegar, I remove the inner cap, poke the peppers with a skewer and refresh them with a top off of hot vinegar and a bit of salt. I do this only once. When that batch of vinegar is gone I use the key from my chatelaine to remove another well guarded bottle from the treasure room! Through the centuries the women of the household have had to lock and guard their tea, sugar, white flour, herbs, etc. I guard my pepper sauce! LOL We use the peppers, too, usually in any dish calling for red pepper flakes.

Friends of ours had a 50th Anniversary party last night at the hunt club with about 85 people in attendance. The catered meal was sliced beef tenderloin with a horseradish sauce, chicken marbella, smashed potatoes, roast asparagus and roast carrot sticks. When dessert was brought out, I was talking to a couple who run a local winery and so got in line for dessert late, and just missed the last piece of chocolate pie, and the other two options of coconut cake and rhubarb cobbler didn't tempt me.

I grew up knowing that we must have black eyes and Cabbage for health and wealth, and pork for well being through out the year. I don't think I have ever not had those things. In answer to the question. Yes you cook the ham hock or ham in with the black eyes. I use Tony's Cajun seasonings and garlic salt along with a Chopped onion. You can add Chopped green bell pepper and celery if you want. I add lots of garlic because we like the flavor it adds. If I don't have ham hocks or ham I use smoked sausage sliced up. I always cook rice and corn bread so we can eat it with either one or both.

We are keeping a vow we made months ago, try new foods for dinner, including fish. Hubby bought tilapia and will dip it into tempura batter and fry. Coleslaw. Avocado. (our back up plan is pizza!) Glenda, you did great filling in for Patti. Thanks.

For dinner it was hamburgers, hubby had his with lettuce, tomato, cheese & a slice of red onion. Mine was just plain.
More rain for tomorrow, please someone take this rain.

I too want to thank you for subbing for Patti.

I went through the drivethru at Wendy's and got a baked potato and chili. Had a glass of milk with it. (Now wish I'd gotten one of their salads.)

Gazpacho, I've had, never made, hounds x two. What's Ezekial bread?

Talapia, pam, I enjoy, but haven't eaten that much. I'm a red snapper person or catfish person
. I like hamburger, sometimes, plain, or just lettuce and mayo. All the way is great as well.

When I taught school, I'd sometimes buy a Wendy's salad and baked potato to take for lunch.

lindalou, is it still chilly where you are? cheesy potato soup, is great and I love smoked sausage.

Everyone's dining is top notch!

Glenda thanks for keeing this thread going! I am a very infrequent poster but an avid reader with a particular interest in eating LOL. I would have missed this daily thread!

And since I'm here now I guess I should say that we are having turkey meatloaf for dinner with asparagus and baked potato and salad.

Today is DH's 82nd birthday.....DD and I are taking him to our favorite steak house, Jocko's.
On the menu will be steak, baked potato, pinquito beans, salad and an ice cream sundae for dessert.

Glenda, Ezekiel bread is made by Food for Life Baking Company. The bread is made from sprouted grains, and contains no flour. It is nutritious, dense and has a delightfully nutty flavor. It is found in the frozen foods section.

Played golf today and stayed for lunch afterwards. I had a catfish reuben sandwich on rye with sweet potato fries. I only ate half so will have the other half for dinner with some gazpacho. Love, love, love gazpacho!

Went to the grocery store after lunch to pick up a few items to take on my trip and 2 miles from home I turned a corner and hit the curb. Goodbye tire...... We have a wonderful roadside service and they were there within 20 minutes to put the spare on for me. It will give DH something to do while I'm away. Checking on best price for new tire. Wasn't that thoughtful of me?

Be sure you check out The Carolina in Pinehurst. Took gs there at Christmas when he was a toddler and always wanted to take him back for Christmas dinner there when he would appreciate. Not gonna happen now :o(

You gotta watch those curbs. I've been cutting my corners short lately. Age?

DH is out of town on business, so I'm just having a sandwich tonight. Will probably have some fresh fruit with Greek yogurt too.

I'm starting to keep an eye on Chantal. Not a very strong storm right now & hope she stays that way. If she continues on her predicted course we'll definitely get some rain & wind over the weekend.

It could be age, Glenda but I told a little white lie. Told DH I had a cramp in my foot and was distracted. Both were the truth, I had a cramp in my foot but that was about 15 minutes earlier. and I was distracted. I had met a friend in the grocery store parking lot and was admiring her new car. A cute little Mercedes convertible. Now I really don't want a Mercedes or a convertible, but it was cute. She said it was on her bucket list. I got a good chuckle over that and that's what I was thinking about when I turned the corner....her bucket list. Maybe I should send her the bill for my new tire. LOL

We're back at last! It was a wonderful reunion but 6 days on the road gets harder and harder.

Glenda, I can't thank you enough for hosting the dinner post. You are such a sweetheart and everyone enjoyed it.

We had a late lunch at IHOP someplace on I-75 in Georgia. But I will tell you about the dessert we had last night at Applebee's. We split the butter pecan blondie. It was so good, I can't tell you! It was a large blondie topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and sprinkled with glazed pecans, which tasted just like pralines. It has a cream cheese sauce to go over the whole thing. I don't know what all was in that sauce but it was awesome! I need to Google copycat recipes to see if I can find it. All those toppings would be really good over peach cobbler.

All we did all weekend was eat and talk, eat and talk--and drink!! Thought I'd be ready for the Betty Ford clinic before it was over!!

Eggrolls. Just eggrolls. My other mother, Lola, is Filipino, and makes the best ones ever. She sent them home with us and that's all we had. I have to get her recipe.
