Once you've had sliced avocado on a BLT, you'll never eat one without it.

I love them that way and have been eating them for years since I moved to CA.
Clare

Never had one, but I had a California burger last week and it had avocado on it. It was yummy! Last night we had curried chicken salad in half an avocado. It was good--but it was a Florida avocado and I like the Haas ones from California better.

Mmmmmm, mmmmm, yum.

Jodi-

I don't care for avocado. I have a tree in my yard and give them away.

I love avocado, I will certainly try this. I wish I had seen this post before I went to town...Oh, well..will get one tomorrow. Thanks for the tip Glenda!

I don't like avocados, but you have me wanting a regular BLT now! lol

I just watched Barefoot contessa. Her Calif. BLT looked deli8cious. She showed how to cut and de-pit an avocado, too. Looks easy and yummy!

Guess I'll give one a try!
Now where in Alabama do I find a place that serves one :o)

I love, love, love avocados.

I've called that a BLTA for years -- never knew it was called a Calif BLT, but it makes sense.

LOVE avocados - esp. on whole grain wheat toast with melted cheddar, sliced tomatoes, little bit of mayo, and lettuce and sprouts. Yum!

DH and I probably eat 3-5 avocados a week.

Ditto Linda_in_Iowa!

I buy avocados five at a time at Sam's.

I had to give up bacon, but I'm sure a California LT would taste good, too. :-)

Never heard it called a California BLT either. It's always been a BLTA here. What some TV folks will do for the ratings LOL. Make a simple sandwich and give it a new name. ;-) Like others have said I hope she used a Haas Avocado. We wouldn't want to confuse the California BLT with a Florida one or a Mexican one or a.....

That's the way I've eaten mine for a whole lotta years. Maybe since back in the 70's. When I don't have avocado I like dill pickles on my BLT.

Linda

That's what Barefoot Contessa called it and when you do a search with California Blt there's lots of recipes out there :o)

Well 49 other states may call it that but we Californians don't. ;-) Barefoot Contessa lives in Manhattan.

I saw this episode! I made them for dinner last night - they were a big hit! Just added some soup too.

P.S. - I was able to pit and peel my avocado just the way she did too!

Barbara

I went out to get the newspaper yesterday and found it on my porch along with two ripe avocados. My across the street neighbor brought them. Also, next door neighbor brings me avocados, too. Her son has a couple of trees.
I thought about putting some on my tomato sandwich but the tomato was so good I just couldn't.
Maybe tomorrow.....
As Wildchild says, in California they are called BLTA's.

The sandwich is called a BLTA here in the Pacific Northwest too. I usually switch between that and a "shrimpie", which is avacado, bay shrimp, cream cheese, lettuce and tomato.

Another Californian who has never heard it called a Ca BLT.
Love 'em, though.

Maybe some one needs to correct Contessa on what she calls California BLT's!

Oh Let her call them what she wants. I'm sure Californians misname food from other regions too. I mean do they really call them Coney Island Dogs in Coney Island? I would be sure to get sweet tea in the South if I ordered iced tea like I do here.

I don't care for hot avocado. I like them chilled with a little vinagret and pepper on them. They do like to put avocado on everything out here. I lived in a neighborhood where a few avocado orchard workers lived, and we were the recipients of lots of free avocados. They even made avocado pie for dessert.

My favorite is fresh sliced tomato out of the garden, ditto on the onion, and sliced Haas avacado with a bit of mayo spread on 12 grain bread. Now THAT'S a sammich!!

"Well 49 other states may call it that but we Californians don't."

Crack me up! But it's the truth. We've been making and eating BLTA sandwiches as long as I can remember. Even some restaurants list them that way on their menu.

"Now where in Alabama do I find a place that serves one"

How about your kitchen, Glenda? :-)

If I could find good avocados I'd eat one every day! Straight out of the shell with some s and p. I grew up in the Willamette Valley, with a mother who grew up in CA, so we ALWAYS had avocados around. Now I'm lucky to find one in twelve that doesn't look (inside and out) like it traveled to NC in a gunnysack dragged behind the truck.

Can you peel them and eat them like you would a piece of
fruit?

They're not sweet....a vegetable, not a fruit.

LOl about names.
In San Diego, I saw a "philadelphia roll" on the menu at a sushi bar. All I could picture was thin sliced fried steak and cheeze whiz wrapped in rice and nori. Ughhhhhhh.

Found out that it was a roll with philadelphia crema cheese...still Ughhh.

Lived in the Philadelphia area all my life, and I never heard of a Philadelphia roll sushi.

I think I've heard California attached to a few recipes that had avocado added to them. I know I've never referred to anything that way, except for California rolls.

If I have avocados in the house (they can be pretty expensive) I'll add them to just about anything I am eating. I LOVE them, and they are really good for you too.

Avocados ARE a fruit but not a sugary fruit. Often they are simply cut in half, pitted and eat right out of the shell. Some just eat them plain or with a dollop of mayo or dressings. You can stuff them with shrimp or crab salad. Sliced they go in salads or most any sandwich. Mashed they can be used as a spread or spiced up and made into Guacamole to be used as a dip.

Buy them hard and put them into a brown paper bag to ripen at room temperature. When they are slightly soft to the touch they are ready to eat. They will keep in the fridge for several days they will keep in the fridge for several days after that. If you plan to mash them keep them out 'til they are mushy but not watery soft. Add a little lemon or lime juice or Fruit Fresh if you mash them to keep them from browning. If you are only using half, leave the pit in on that side and wrap tightly in plastic wrap leaving the air out.

In California they put avocados in everything including omlets~~I bet there is even a avocado sorbet or ice cream being served here also. To me anything with bacon is great!!!!

I love avocados on anything! And BLT's or turkey sandwiches are top with avo's on them! My favorite way right out of the skin..I usually eat a few avocados a week.

I also love them with scrambled eggs and a bit of fried potatoes.
