The choice of each ingredient is important so we will look at each one closely starting with the tomato.
Tomato of choice: Any tomato that is a personal favorite such as Mortgage Lifter, Giant Belium, Brandywine, Georgia Streak (or whatever happens to be ripe in the garden). The larger tomatoes are preferred beause one slice covers the whole sandwich and adds a nice pleasant visual effect. Note: It is UNLAWFUL to use store bought tomatoes and is punishable to the fullest extent of the law if found doing so. (hehe)
Lettuce: Iceberg variety (chilled) is the only kind allowed. Other kinds of lettuce may prove to be too vitamin enriched and healthy which would spoil the whole concept of this wonderful sandwich. Lettuce should be left in leaf form and not chopped up like you find in some restaurants. The outer leaves should be used as they tend to be greener than the heart of the lettuce.
Bacon: Oscar Meyer Thick Sliced only. Other bacons that have been tried do not have the flavor that blends well because depending on curing process some bacons are extremely strong flavored.
Mayonnaise: Hellmann's REAL Mayonnaise and no store brands, please. Besides, Hellmann's contains Omega 3 which I feel counteracts any negative affects from the bacon pertaining to human health issues. The mayonnaise should be spread thinly but still be discernable as it brings together all other flavors in concert.
Bread: Bread is there to hold all other ingredients therefore it should not be of strong flavor like some of the dark breads pumpernickel being a good example. A good Italian bread sliced not too thickly would be perferred but any white is permissible. The bread should not be toasted too darkly a nice light tan color is the correct shade.
Correct assembly of the perfect BLT: The toast should be allowed to cool completely as it will effect the mayonnaise. Spread the mayonnaise on both pieces of toast. Never put tomato slices next to bread because the juices will make the bread soggy always start your layers with bacon then tomato and topped with lettuce as explained below.
On one toast put 3 (or more) slices of bacon followed by one large slice of tomato to cover entire sandwich (or two slices if tomato is smaller, four slices if very small) then topped with ample amount of lettuce. Afix the other slice of bread and cut sandwich in half using a very sharp knife as to not disturb the arrangement.
A word of caution: At this point it is advisable to roll up your sleeves if you are not wearing a short sleeves shirt or top.
The photos below will show acceptable and unacceptable BLT's:
Perfect BLT
Cheese as an ingredient in BLT's is NOT allowed
Chopped lettuce and crumbled bacon is a no-no
Look, if you want healthy leave out the bacon but please no sprouts!
And no healthy lettuce, unacceptable
Pay attention to layers, remember tomatoes make bread soggy
This is an extremely serious violation
And this one is just "sooo wrong!"
And finally "No babies should be harmed in the making of your BLT's!!!"
