That is quite a deal you got for yourself. When I used laptops, Toshiba Satellites were what I bought. Enjoy your present.

I recently bought a Toshiba Satellite lap top......Windows 8.1.
I got it all set up and loved it....and then I had problems with the keyboard.
I called Toshiba.....not much help. Took it back to where I got it and they thought they fixed it. But the same thing happened again with the keyboard.
I took it back....they fixed it while I was there. Worked great for about 24 hours. Then the keyboard problem returned.
I will call Toshiba again and see if I can get the problem resolved.
Very frustrating!

Carol in Ca, things like that happen no matter what you buy. I have friends with a Toshiba Satellite, it may have Windows 7, not sure. My niece also has a Satellite with Windows 8. Neither one of those have had any problems. I hope I have better luck than you have. Have you asked for a replacement for your troubled Satellite? At this point I think that I would. Sounds as if you've gone thru enough trouble to remediate an obviously faulty computer.

Chloecat, I'm hoping that since mine is the Windows 8.1, update on the 8, the bugs will have been worked out.

Good news! I was able to get my laptop working again!
I really do like it and am so happy the keyboard is working correctly.
I am slowly getting used to Windows 8.1.

Carol in Ca, so glad your Toshiba is working again. I hope you have years and years of trouble free service from it. Mine is still in the box. I haven't been in the mood to set it up and try to figure out 8.1

just be sure to make those recovery discs or back up on a hard drive, it is very easy to do these days.

I know a lot of people who have asked how they can set up 8 with out having it use a microsoft account, you can do that and set it up just like the other versions as a local account this link explains how to do that.

Oy, I forgot that I have to make those recovery discs. That's why it's still in the box. I have to be in the right mood to deal with technical stuff, like the discs and creating a shortcut around setting up a Microsoft account, tho I think I might have one, if having a Hotmail acct counts. I had that coupon, too, so I bought myself a wide format scanner/printer. Delivered $116.59. It might be refurbished but I don't care. It's out of the box and I thought today was going to be its lucky day but I ran out of time. I have to be in the mood to deal with technical stuff these days. I don't have the patience to deal with things that don't work.

8.1 is easy. On the goofy apps startup screen, just click desktop in the lower left corner for "normal" computing. It's laptops that stink, not the system.

Hubby surprised me with a new laptop when I came home from Hawaii in early April, went to be there for our granddaughter's first birthday, with a new laptop. He had to use my desktop while I was gone and said it was so slow that he didn't want me using it anymore.
It's a Toshiba with Windows 8.1 but I set it up using a Chrome Browser that works like 7. They give you a choice when downloading. The only time I have to use the apps is when I click on the snipping tool, Paint or other programs. I removed all the apps on the start app page but the ones I use on a somewhat regular basis. If I need something else I just click on the little Window icon in the lower left, which opens the app page, and type what I'm looking for and a search shows up on the upper right side.
Until I realized that all the things I love about the Windows Photo editing program was the same, but for a different set up, I used my desk top for all photos and transferred them via thumb drive. Instead of the slide system that Windows & and before had, 8.1 has a circle and shows choices when asking for auto fix. I don't care for the auto fix in this version, but then the other wasn't that great either. I can make better changes on my own using the other tools.
