I just put mine in the fridge in the box they came in.Lasted forever.... I don't use garlic much,until lately that is...since I'm still on a Bruschetta kick.But i bought the little jar of minced garlic to make that...need a new jar soon.I think I've used more garlic since Memorial Day than I have my whole life! LOL!

I just keep it in the box it comes in opened in the pantry. We use a lot of it so it doesn't sit around very long. It will shrink up to nothing if you have it too long.

The 1st I bought didn't come in a box, it was just loose (like onions). What I bought today is in a little mess bag.

So it's ok to keep it in the fridge?

I bought a garlic keeper......a little ceramic jar and lid with holes in the body to let air in. I haven't had any dry out. You can buy garlic in a box? I've only seen them loose or in the mesh bags.
My HUUGE beef is stores only sell garlic from China. It's too expensive for them to buy and sell Ontario garlic.

Can't garlic be grown in the US and sold here? I hate buying Chinese garlic. I don't trust it at all.

I buy garlic loose & store it in a small basket at the corner of the cooktop. If I keep it too long (a few months) it dries out, but otherwise keeps well.

Yes, garlic can be grown in the United States. It is planted in the fall and mulched good so it doesn't freeze. It will grow during the spring/summer. Once the stalks dry out, bring the heads in. I put full heads in an empty plastic bowl in my kitchen cupboard. Yes, over time it will dry up to nothing. I've also put the cloves in a lidded mason jar with oil and kept in the fridge. Some people will make a braid out of the stalks and hang them upside down in a cool dry place.

Garlic is good for you. It's often been called "poor man's penicillin". The juice is great for drying up poison ivy should you get it. Taking an odorless garlic capsule daily helps prevent yeast infections.

I hang my garlic in a little mesh bag, on a hook under a cabinet above the kitchen counter.

Same way as jasdip...a small brown earthenware garlic keeper jar/lid with holes in body to let air in.

I share your feelings about any food product made in China! I would rather try to grow my own. Speaking of that, go to Google and type in the search words: growing garlic.

If garlic can be grown in Minnesota I would think you could do it where you live.

Thanks!! I just noticed after I got home, the garlic I bought today was from China!! I know it can be grown HERE..because my Dad had it in the backyard. That's where we got the garlic they kept in the jar! lol His always came back year after year.

I grow garlic here in Nebraska too. Nothing better than fresh garlic. I leave it in the garage after I dig it in August. Also when it gets that little bulb on the top (seeds) I cut them off. You can plant them for a bigger garlic crop. I'll save a few tops and stick them in a roast or mash in butter for garlic bread.

Moni mentioned on here last year that she stores her garlic in a mug so that is what I started to do. I keep it in my pantry where it is dark.

I try to buy my garlic from California but the only place I can find it is one particular store. I should start growing it in my backyard because it is easy to grow.

Next week I am going to look at our new farmers market to see if they have any local garlic.

I don't think you're supposed to store garlic in the fridge--supposed to change the quality or flavor of it, I believe.

I use a home-made terra cotta garlic keeper. Instead of buying one of those pricy versions, I go to the garden center, buy a terra cotta flower pot that's the size I need, and then I buy a terra cotta saucer that's large enough to fit as a LID over the top of the pot. You put the saucer on your counter, put your garlic on it, then invert the flour pot over it. Voila--a very inexpensive (no more than $1-2) garlic keeper. Works great.

azzalea, what a great idea! I did hear that California is the world's largest grower of garlic. On another forum we were just discussing China and food and other products. Seems lots of food products are grown here and shipped there (I know, it doesn't make sense to me either). Sorry I don't recall the thread or the forum or I would have linked it for your own eyes. But "food for thought" the garlic is probably not grown in China.

The flower pot idea is good. I have an unglazed ceramic garlic keeper with holes in it and a lid, probably similar to what a couple of posters described. This was a gift to me and it works well. I keep in on a shelf in the kitchen.

It amuses me that most of the garlic sold in stores here is from China. I wonder if we're exporting our California garlic to China for them to buy. I get the local produce as much as possible.

I have a garlic keeper. Garlic needs to breath. If stored in the fridge or a sealed container it will get mushy and moldy.
Never store garlic in oil. Botulism can grow very well in that environment.

Gilroy is not the worlds largest producer of garlic. China is. Gilroy is the world's largest processor of garlic. There is quite a lot of garlic grown in Gilroy. Most notable is the Christopher Ranch.

From the 25th though the 27th of this month Gilroy will hold it's annual Garlic Festival. I may just brave the crowds this year. It's a lot of fun if the weather is good.
