Comments (6)Eric, I tried to email you back but it said you did not allow emails. I wrote you a note on the other side of this forum but apparently you didn't get it. I would have loved to get some of your Egyptian walking onions. If you see this and still have some please let me know. But leave an email addy so I can get in touch with you. Comments (9)I'll second what Pesky wrote -- don't store your onions and potatoes near one another since the gasses they give off as they ripen happen to make the other one ripen faster. Have you ever tried the green plastic vegetable-storage bags? They're usually around $4-5 for a box and each bag can be used over and over (up to 20 times according to the box, but who knows). I was skeptical but now I'm constantly giving them away to friends who visit our house. They are fabulous. You store the fruit or veg inside and the plastic absorbs or neutralizes the gasses, so the items stay much fresher much longer. I'll buy a big bunch of bananas and put half in the bag and leave half out, so they ripen at different rates. Fabulous. Broccoli, green peppers, berries that normally ripen so fast you can hardly get to them, they all ripen much more slowly in the bags. I've never tried the Ziploc brand, only the kind that are sold in a flat box at Walmart or Menards....See MoreWhere do you keep your fruit? (And onions/garlic/potatoes....)?
Comments (20)The real issues are needing separate storage areas so that you don't accidentally accelerate the ripening of the one thing or another and some are best left in the dark (think root cellars). On the herbs, some should be air dried and they are usually tied into small bundles and hung up so that air gets them from all sides. Some also dry better in a dehydrator. Don't you love being so much more involved with your food? I too loved the "California" drawer, they really work but being open to both the area below the floor and into the attic it functions like a chimney in the case of fire and are probably not permitted by code anymore....See MoreHow do YOU store potatoes, onions, etc.?
Comments (10)Ours are in a tiered hanging basket in our kitchen. Fruit (apples, oranges, mangos and bananas) get the largest bottom basket because we eat a lot of fruit, middle one is potatoes and onions (sometimes avocados), and the top smallest one is garlic, limes, peppers. If we buy a large bag of potatoes, we empty it into a large basket in our pantry and take them out for the hanging basket as it needs to be refilled. It works well, but yes we deal with the onion/garlic "paper" skins below the basket from time to time....See Moreallison0704
